Putin may not be so bright, after all....

Everyone seems to gloat over this guy on a global scale. And sure, he's made some charismatic moves over the last few years, but unfortunately, his stubbornness is leading his country towards failure.

Russia Falls Behind In Prosperity, Personal-Freedom Rankings

An annual assessment of global wealth and well-being ranks Russia 68th in the world, or seven places lower than a year ago.

The 2014 Prosperity Index by London-based Legatum Institute rates 142 countries around the world based on eight categories, including: economy, personal freedom, education, governance, health, safety, and security.

Russia's lowest ranking -- 124th in the world -- comes in the personal freedom category, while its highest -- 37th -- is in education.

In health care, Russia is ranked 44th.

Norway leads the overall rankings for the sixth year, followed by Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada, and Sweden. (Congrats Lithium & SoulMonster... :P )

China ranks 54th and the United States 10th.

Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan rank among the lowest -- 127th, 128th, and 137th, respectively.

Among Central Asian states, Kazakhstan fares best at 55th, followed by Uzbekistan (57th), Kyrgyzstan (74th), and Tajikistan (94th).

Among other former Soviet republics, Belarus is ranked 53rd, Ukraine 63rd, Azerbaijan 79th, Georgia 80th, Moldova 89th, and Armenia 95th.

In the Western Balkans, Croatia is ranked 50th, Montenegro 65th, Macedonia 69th, and Serbia 77th.

The index defines prosperity as both wealth and well-being and states that, aside from a high gross domestic product, the most prosperous nations in the world are those that also have happy, healthy, and free citizens.

Personal freedom? Putin would presumably see that as a personal triumph.

Putin has been in power for 15 years. He's doing something right.

Sure, if you consider personal triumph over the progress of a nation, "doing something right"......all in while reversing 30 years of progress with relations with the West. He is slowly, but steadily, bringing Russia back to the post WWII days. Brilliant.

You do not understand the Russian mentality mate. For a Russian, capitalistic-democracy is some flabby anglophonic middle class wanky fudge. They like authoritarian dictators there. It is a tradition which goes back to Ivan the Terrible. The cold war ending was a big disaster for them. If you get a taxi in Moscow, cab drivers will tell you that 'Russia has never been the same since Stalin died''. This is how the Russians operate. These ''30 years of progress'' were a national humiliation for them which they wish to reverse.

I respectfully disagree. Although I do agree that there may be a small percentage of Russians that miss the "communist" days...the majority of them are glad they are supposedly a "democracy" now. Almost every Russian I have ever met has admitted that it has been rough over there.... but I have yet to meet ONE that wishes it was the way it used to be (in terms of communism)....not anyone under the age of 40, anyway.

Were these Russians you met, in America Kasanova?

Yes, mostly in the U.S....so there is some bias. But I have met at least a dozen or so in Europe, Italy, etc..and yes, I always bring this conversation up.....and I have yet to hear one that wishes they were in cold war Soviet Union. What I gathered from most of them, is that it's (currently) the lesser of two evils.

It is not even the communism so much as the dictatorship. Russians do not understand nor particularly like democracy. They see democracy as weak and decadent. They like a good autocrat who, to use the American expression, ''kicks fuckin ass.'' They like a man who, gets things done, the 'strong man'. The whole trajectory of Russian history will tell you this.

A great quote about democracy "A bunch of guys who talk but not get anything done"

Democracy in a nutshell for most people. Something Americans will never understand. People in Russia (and other countries) don't want a bunch of rich assholes looking after their own interests. They want an oligarchy that gets shit done even if they have to live in conditions that not up to the "Middle class" and higher standards. They want food, electricity and work.

I can't really disagree with you there....they do have that sort of mindset.

Russia is like the kid that was was never allowed to go out.... who finally gets independence once he's old enough....and when he does, gets arrested for disorderly conduct and gets put back in jail.

Why don't they vote communism back in?

Russia is not to be fucked with. With the world's largest nuclear stockpile and the second most powerful army in the world, they have an even more powerful weapon. They can call Beijing and their investors can tell the US to fuck off and our economy goes down the drain. You think 2008 was bad? They can do much worse than that.

Well, the U.S. and the West have been "fucking" with Russia ever since the 'ole brainiac decided to declare war on Ukraine.

Have you seen the value of the U.S. Dollar vs. the Russian Ruble lately?

America are just the imperialists of the day, adjusting the definition to fit the day and current climate. Before people just went fuckin' all out and just took over countries and bled the motherfuckers dry...then, as mankind became more civilised you had these little, gentle forms of imperialism (or at least gentle relative to what went on before) like The British Empire where they ran these fuckin' places but they were more moderate, let people run their own manors to a greater or lesser degree, as long as its understood that when it comes time to stand up and be counted they are The British Empire.

Cut to modern day and you got todays version of imperialism, which is basically America going around the world shit-stirring in the middle east, engineering conflicts by way of which they can basically rob poor people and keep em in line, maintaining military presence in countries that don't want them there and hate their guts, all under the guise of bringing you democracy. Whilst they piss on their fuckin' corpses, torture suspects to the point of insanity and basically lay waste to a corner of the world for the money in it.

So yeah, all the same bollocks as ever really, just you have to adjust certain aspects to fit the times but make no mistake about it, if they could get away with having slaves still they would. And thats all of em, countries I mean.

At the end of the day it all boils down to how the world powers go about protecting their interests and how these actions negatively affect the rest of the world

There are no "good guys"

And looking at the actions of these different world powers it is hard not to see the actions of the US since 9/11 as being detrimental to world peace on a far greater scale than their nearest rivals.

First, China is not at Putin's beck and call.

Second, China wouldn't do that. If they submarine the US economy, who's going to buy their goods? The economies are too inter-connected. The US is "too big to fail".
