The Final Cut

Morning jagoffs!

We have discussed the post Waters era of Floyd and the 3 Gilmour lead albums quite a bit on here. We have not really ever talked about another dark horse in Floyd mythology- The Final Cut.

This album gets a lot of hate- it's called a Roger solo record, the band didn't tour for it, Rick wasn't on it, and it is very political. However, I think it is an excellent piece of work when you take a step back and look at it from a lyrical point of view. I think this is Roger at his lowest and angriest- surpassing even Animals and The Wall- and I love the raw anger you get from it. Some of his best lyrics are on here too. The music is good, but it exists to serve Waters' vision.

Anyways, I really like this record. Discuss!

I use the following two words to describe The Final Cut: FUCKING BRILLIANT.

Every single track is amazing. Shit like The Gunner's Dream, the title song, Two Suns In The Sunset are all incredibly under rated as far as Floyd material goes. I love this album so much, I actually tracked down the 7" for Not Now John just to have The Hero's Return Part II which is only on that record. A bonus is I also got the humorous "Stuff all that!" radio edit of Not Now John on the A-Side.

It should have been a solo album and Pink Floyd should have reunited a decade later. The material between Division Bell and Amused To Death would have made for a better last album.

Gunner's Dream and Not Now John are the only songs that make it Pink Floyd, maybe the title track...

They should have put When the Tigers Broke Free on the original but now it sounds a little out of place on the reissue.

That's the one! Such an awful edit of the song, but it's fun to have around. Plus, I mostly bought the 7" for the B-Side anyway.

I've never had a problem with it being a Pink Floyd album. Even though Dave only has a couple solos on it, he makes them count IMO. Another thing people don't like is that Nick isn't drumming on Two Suns In The Sunset, but again, I'm ok with that.

Regarding ATD; I usually refer to that album as "The best Pink Floyd album without the Pink Floyd name on it". I agree that between that and TDB, it could be simply the best Floyd record of all time, however I wouldn't cut anything from ATD. If anything, I'd add a few tracks from TDB to it and make it a 3LP set.

Criminally underrated album! It's really very good!

It's different from nearly all it's predecessors sound-wise though. It doesn't feature the same typical Floyd melodies other albums did. It's more lyrical. Is it a Roger solo record? Pretty close to it at least! Is it amazing? Absolutely!

And while we're talking criminally underrated albums - Amused To Death!

See my above comments on ATD. I could not agree more that it's massively underrated.

Full disclosure here, I've never heard a Floyd album in its entirety that came out after The Wall. But I did enjoy Waters' Pros And Cons, as well as Amused To Death. Been listening to The Wall lately so I'm thinking of giving Final Cut a try.

If you like Pros & Cons and ATD, I'm reasonably sure you'll dig TFC.

The Final Cut is definitely Rog's best post- Wall work IMO

And for real? You're missing some great albums! Momentary Lapse, Division Bell, and Endless River are really good

Turns out I knew so much of the album already just from various Waters shows I've been to or listened to over the years. Nice to hear the studio versions, album's got such a haunting somber quality to it. Probably won't be the last time I give this one a spin, especially if the mood calls for it. I felt Gilmour sort of under delivers on this one, but there wasn't much call for his guitar skills I guess.

Plus Dave and Rog weren't on particularly good terms anymore. Little wonder why people feel it's more of a Rog solo project. ;) Dave does have one particular moment on this album though - Not Now John. Really love that song! I totally agree about the mood of the album. I love it for what it is, but it's definitely not something I can listen to every day. It's not one of those albums that doesn't leave your stereo for days, if you know what I mean. ;)

Southampton Dock and Fletcher Memorial were standards on Rog's 2006/2007/2008 DSOTM tour. I've seen him play them twice. Loved it! I think he did The Final Cut a few times on that tour as well.
