Chinese Democracy Sales

Recommended Posts

Coma16 numbers and stats change everytime. Really hard to trust them.

What do you mean? I've always just took what i found in wikipedia (same place as WFA got his but for some reason you don't question his numbers). Are you suggesting that it's being changed there? I'm not certain but it's possible i s'pose...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Democracy#Commercial_performance

"The album secured an IFPI European Platinum Award, having sold more than one million copies in Europe,[64][65] and had sold 2.6 million units worldwide as of February 2009, according to Universal Music.[63] The album also reached triple platinum certification in Canada, as well as platinum certifications in many other countries, including Finland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.[66] It was certified gold in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazil, and Colombia.[66] It re-entered the US Billboard 200 again in the week ending April 3, 2011, selling 3,200 copies, enough for the 198th position. At that date, the album had sold 614,000 copies in the US according to Nielsen Soundscan.[67] In the UK, it has sold 365,899 copies as of July 2014.[68]"

Europe is much more than just the UK.

I'm guessing 7 million worldwide sales, including digital copies like iTunes etc. Now I'm not saying it didn't massively underachieve selling wise but personally I think streaming it in on My Space at the time of release was a mistake, maybe it was done to combat piracy but people can just click and decide if they are going to buy the album and of the millions of people that listened to snippets of the album they just didn't buy it.

99 cents is a fair price for the "only available at Best Buy" sticker alone, considering it's still first print.

I encourage people to buy the remaining copies of CD at their local Dollar Tree store so Axl fans can finally claim they have sold "millions". :)

My local record store has a copy on vinyl for $19.99. They had a copy of AFD for the same price but no sign of UYIs or Lies.

Is the vinyl a hard-to-find item by now?

Not sure but I think it's out of print in the USA. I've never seen it under $20 in Canada but I'm sure you can find in on eBay for less (but they get you with shipping).

Don't buy it the vinyl sucks. I returned it at least 8 times because there were skips in it. Finally gave up.

As for the sales here are the latest according to Soundscan (US Only):

Total: 655,896 LP: 27,360 CD: 532,421 Digital: 96,114

As far as singles go. Chinese Democracy (the song) has sold the most with: 196,424

Next is Better with: 79511

Can we as fans get this record out there to the masses or has that ship sailed.

Did you not hear about the Myspace streaming of the entire album?

CD's release was reviewed by every major music media outlet.

There were commercials on TV and in magazines.

Anybody that would actually pay $15 to purchase a Guns n Roses album KNOWS that CD was released.

It was a great album with many great tracks. I was talking about Sonic Hwy the other day, one said it's boring. Aside from track 1 I sorta agree. Meanwhile TWAT, Catcher, TIL, and Sorry are all far better songs than track 1 of Sonic. Oh, but it didn't sell like 91 GnR, no lines at Tower records, so it musta sucked. Rock isn't what it was in those days, period, we can't turn back time. Meanwhile many great songs, that's all that matters in the end.

Oh yeah, meant to add, and you all steal music since 2000 anyway! Here's a good question: How many copies of Chinese Democracy were downloaded for free?

And for the record, I LOVED Chinese Democracy the album and still listen to songs off it almost on a daily basis.

But the ridiculous notion that rock fans somehow don't know about it.........give me a break.

Most anticipated album of all time, remember that?

No one I know listens to ChiDem.

I listen to a few songs off ChiDem when I feel like analyzing terrible audio production. It's an incredible tool for teaching myself what NOT to do.

In fact, for a few years, I had the vinyl of ChiDem up in my studio, above my engineering station. It was a stark reminder of what bad audio engineering is.
