WhazUp
Some of the songs remind me of Prince's Dream Factory/Crystal Ball material. Really cool!

Towelie
Never really been able to get into D'angelo. Always felt he was wildly overrated and a bit pretentious. All hype and little substance. And then you get cats like Van Hunt who are so much more versatile and actually capable of forming a memorable melody line and a chord progression.... and nobody pays any attention. Meh, that's media hyperbole for you. Edited December 17, 2014 by Towelie

Towelie
Calling music pretentious is still a thing? It is when all you do is mumble and imitate Prince in every song you write. Edited December 18, 2014 by Towelie
Zeppelin
Well, yeah, I can understand not liking the music if it's not what you like. But it's not really pretentious to me.
Towelie
I heard a few tracks from Black Messiah to see what all the fuss was about... That last song on the album is literally D'angelo imitating Prince's vocal stylings on songs like Adore and Do Me Baby. It's not inspired by, it's just straight up copying. If that isn't pretentious, I don't know what is.
Zeppelin
I don't really hear it, but that's fine. I still don't think it's pretentious, even in instances where vocal stylings are similar. I mean, if his arrangements were 25 minutes long and he had orchestras overblowing everything, then maybe I could see an argument for someone thinking it was pretentious (even though I still wouldn't think so personally). luciusfunk
Upon first listen it's not that bad. I still need to give it a proper listen while not at work so I can have the volume higher.

luciusfunk
I'd never even heard of him until the radio mentioned "first album in 14 years" and I saw a few websites talking about it.

Len Cnut
You only like him as a means to building a rapport with birds, lulling them into a false sense of security and caving their skulls in with a clawhammer like the little woman hating Ted Bundy dressed as a New England prep school teacher that you are
