Holy Shit! No one told me this was a thing! I can't wait to listen to this. Anyone heard it yet?

Just listened to it, actually. Shit's dope - it's like he never disappeared for a decade.

Stopped and bought the CD early today. Listened to the whole thing straight through. Lithium speaks the truth, this album is excellent.

Never really been able to get into D'angelo. Always felt he was wildly overrated and a bit pretentious. All hype and little substance.

And then you get cats like Van Hunt who are so much more versatile and actually capable of forming a memorable melody line and a chord progression.... and nobody pays any attention.

Meh, that's media hyperbole for you.

I heard a few tracks from Black Messiah to see what all the fuss was about...

That last song on the album is literally D'angelo imitating Prince's vocal stylings on songs like Adore and Do Me Baby. It's not inspired by, it's just straight up copying. If that isn't pretentious, I don't know what is.

I don't really hear it, but that's fine. I still don't think it's pretentious, even in instances where vocal stylings are similar. I mean, if his arrangements were 25 minutes long and he had orchestras overblowing everything, then maybe I could see an argument for someone thinking it was pretentious (even though I still wouldn't think so personally).

  • 2 weeks later...

I honestly thought only girls listened to D'Angelo

Listened? What?

We just used to watch 'how does it feel' over and over again. ;)

Just kidding, his music was pretty great as well.

Anyway, glad to see he is back again. I think it's a pretty good album.
