The 'Help Dan With Sound Design' Thread

So I got a lot of new audio equipment this year, including a professional microphone, high quality headphones, and a new turntable amplifier and speakers.

So I'm incredibly interested in sound design and harnessing the full potential of this stuff, but I don't really know where to begin.

Like I don't even understand all the terms on an equalizer or the consequences of their adjustment, so if anyone could help me learn the most fruitful way of listening to certain types of music, and what adjustments I can do to maximize drums, guitar, vocals, synth, beats, etc, I would greatly appreciate it.

Generally I listen to psychedelic, rap, jazz, blues/folk/roots, indie, electronics, and classic rock and roll

Can someone give me an idea of how to use an equalizer, or what sort of stereo, amplifier, or speakers will help improve my listening experience?

Bonus points to anyone who can help me use my microphone and editing software to its full potential for the podcast

Yeah I got this 1970s entertainment system and it has an old school EQ with the frequency ranges on it, but I wanna become familiar with the ranges and what they adjust before I play with it

Some of the switches make obvious changes to the way the guitar crunches, or the way the drum kick pops, but others are a little too subtle for me oand detect unless I know what I'm looking for

(Patiently waits for wise words from Russ)
