Spider-Man in the MCU

Shit man, Civil War is really shaping up to be more of an "Avengers 2.5" instead of a Captain America film!

The roster so far is-

Captain America

Iron Man
Spider-Man (basically confirmed)

Black Widow

Falcon

Hawkeye

The Winter Soldier

Crossbones

Baron Zemo

and that isn't even including Maria Hill/SHIELD remnants, tv show characters like Daredevil, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, Vision, War Machine, etc. I'm sure a few of those will be in it.

FUCKKKKKK

EDIT- and I love X Men and Wolverine. Hell, I'd love to see Logan tearing shit up with the Avengers, but for me, Spider-man was the big one. He IS Marvel's flagship character and to have him missing from the MCU left a big hole. Add to the fact that the "Amazing" series was not good, it just felt wrong to exclude him. At least X Men is great right now. The Last Stand and Origins were HUGE misfires, but I actually really loved The Wolverine and Days of Future Past. In fact, I think Days of Future Past is one of the best X Men/comic book movies out there. I'm really excited for Apocalypse and Deadpool, too. After those, I wouldn't mind the series going back to Marvel since Fox has really done a lot with it and there won't be many more places to go. If it doesn't happen, it isn't a huge deal since X Men is quality again and since they have been a bit more "standalone" in Marvel, anyways. Fantastic 4 also isn't that big of a deal. I would have liked them in Civil War, but it isn't a massive loss considering the film will be very different from the comic.

Wolverine, Wolverine, Wolverine, Wolverine!!!!

Wolvie has always been my personal fav. I like the Fox films, they are ok. But PLEASE get him in the MCU. They gotta get him now IMO. He is the only Marvel ICON they are missing. They don't need the Fantastic Four or the rest of the X~Men, they just need Spidey and Wolvie to make them complete. Although the Infinty War without Silver Surfer or Galactus is a little wierd. I bet Disney is talking with Fox right now about making some deals, just like they were with Sony. Obviously Sony was a little needier than Fox will be, but Disney has BIG money and they want to make the fans happy, getting Spidey proves this.

On a side note, I like Batman and his villians, they are great. But the rest of DC is a giant turd IMO. So to go a head and turn this into a Marvel vs. DC debate, DC can go a head and suck a fat cock with this news IMO.

Yeah, as I said, I love the current Wolvie/X Men movies, but after Apocalypse the series should be complete. It'll have been over 15 years since it started and it should go out on a high note. Deadpool can stay as a standalone thing, and Wolverine and the X Men would have been able to be introduced in The Avengers 4 in 2019.

Of course, this will never happen because Fox has a successful, money making franchise. They already confirmed ANOTHER standalone Wolverine movie, an X Force Movie, and a Gambit movie, so things will be milked all over again after the series got back on track with First Class. If Marvel/Disney was to get rights to the X Men, Fox would have to be fucking the series up as bad as Sony did, so it'd be a long ways off. Definitely not in time for any of Phase 3

Whatever, we got Spidey!

Hugh Jackman has said that he wants in the MCU, he's been talking about it for a few years now, so anything is possible. I don't forsee Marvel Studios or Disney making the same kind of deals with Fox that they just did with Sony, because they don't really have to. But I can see them saying "Hey let us use Wolverine, Silver Surfer, and Galactus in the Infinity War and we will let you use characters such and such in your future films." Because like you said, Fox won't let the X~Men or mutants in general go back to Marvel, no way. But they will also run out of characters eventually. Some of them like Quicksilver are owned by both, so that could create some real issues down the road. I know Fox has already expressed interest in Omega Red, but he could potentially be one of those characters both studios have rights to. So I'm sure mutual benifits could be worked out for both parties, which is essentially what Sony asked for as well. They wanted a few characters that they didn't have rights to. Marvel has opened up the flood gates with Guardians of the Galaxy, even small characters can turn into great ones if done properly, so the rights to those characters are a gold mine right now. So bottom line, this news with Spidey, is literally amazing because he NEEDED to be in the MCU, but it also means the possibility for other deals became a whole hell of a lot more realistic.

Yeah, I think they have enough time. It'll be cutting it close, but I'm sure they'll manage.

Marvel expressed interest in putting him in Civil War as far back as Fall, so its something they have been thinking about. Considering the Sony deal went through, they have at least been able to keep the "best case" scenario in the back of their minds. Now that it is happening, they will have to move fast. I'm sure there is some form of a script out there with Spider-Man's story in it, and if filming starts in April, they have a bit of time to finalize casting and move into overdrive. I'd bet Marvel and Sony have been thinking of casting for the past few months, too. Spidey may not have a huge role in Civil War, but them saying "making his debut before 2017" pretty much confirms that'll be his first major appearance. It'd be a big missed opportunity for them to flub this.

And yeah, this kills DC. I'm still excited for Batman Vs Superman and Justice League, but those won't even come close to Marvel. Civil War alone is basically an Avengers movie at this point, not to mention all the other new Marvel movies coming out around DC's schedule. If Marvel can make a movie with a talking Raccoon a box office smash, then they can really do anything at this point

The thing about Spidey is he doesn't need an origin story for the MCU, its not needed. Same goes for Wolverine, all they have to do is literally show up on screen and it'll work. I'm sure Sony has the final choice on casting, so that's probably going on as we speak. But like Zoso said, I'm sure 2 Civil War scripts exist, one with Spidey and one without. The thing about ALL of these Marvel characters is that no matter which studio makes the film (Marvel, Sony, or Fox) they all have people that work together that are essentially employed by Marvel. Hugh Jackman talked about it recently in an interview. So they have ALWAYS been working together since the first X~Men movie came out. The big issues are money and rights issues, so basically what I'm saying is that these conversations about Spidey and other characters have been going on for a long time. We might have gotten the news today, but the deal could have been done a year ago. Marvel wants to do things right, I trust them, and I believe they are going to do right by us fans. They know what we REALLY want.

I wish DC all the best, competition is good and I still really love DC, but I just don't see them coming close.

Like, I'm psyched for lesser known Marvel characters like Ms. Marvel, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, etc but for some reason, I can't get psyched about DC doing the same with stuff like "Suicide Squad".

I think a lot of it comes to tone. Marvel movies keep that relatively lighthearted, PG-13, fun-as-hell vibe throughout their films. That isn't to say things can't and won't get serious. I'm sure Age of Ultron and CIvil War, for example, will have an air of darkness to them. But at the heart of all these movies is that "Marvel vibe". It just really meshes well for the whole shared universe approach. Man of Steel wasn't terrible, but it was a bit to dreary and dark. I don't see that tone translating well as a shared- universe- superhero thing. These films need to be more fun. The Dark Knight trilogy worked like that because it was self contained. DC also seems like they are rushing into things to capitalize on Marvel's success. We also haven't seen a lot from DC to really get us excited, so Batman vs. Superman is going to be really important to them. It already has that Civil War/Avengers-lite vibe to it considering Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Aquaman in it. I do think it was a smart move on DC. A bunch of origin stories would have been boring but a straight up Justice League movie right now would have been overkill.

And as Mike says, the Spidey deal may have just been finalized this week, but Marvel has been planning for a lot longer than that. They'll be more prepared for Civil War than we think. No origin for Spidey is also a good idea. He can have some sort of introduction, of course, but we don't need to see Peter get bit and Ben die again.

Yeah, it'd certainly be cool but Spider-Man is definitely way more integral. I bet Feige and the rest of the Marvel gang is resting easy today lol. If Fox was fucking up X Men right now, I'd say something could happen, but Marvel doesn't really need them right now (the schedule is already insanely packed through 2019) and Fox is in a good place.

After Phase 3 is done and Fox beats X Men into the ground even more over the next 5 years? Who knows!

EDIT- I love this comment I read, having Spidey not with everyone in the MCU is like not having Mickey Mouse with the rest of the gang

It'll be tough, I really only read their comics, but in movies they're pretty far behind, and they only have themselves to blame because from 1989 onwards they had such a huge headstart, and didn't do anything with it.

When you keep Wonder Woman in development hell, botch Green Lantern's portrayal and give Superman and Batman such polarizing revamps, it doesn't seem encouraging to fans. Meanwhile in animation they can do no wrong, and Marvel can do no right seemingly. DC should put Bruce Timm in charge of the cinematic universe.

DC's animated movies are stellar. Year One and The Dark Knight Returns are both really, really good portrayals of their books. Apparently Arrow and The Flash are decent TV shows, too.

DC has done some great things on the silver screen- the original Superman and its sequel will always be very important, the first Batman movie was big, and then you obviously have The Dark Knight trilogy which was awesome. I also really liked some of their other projects like Road to Perdition (if that counts) and Watchmen.

Problem is, that's it. Most of their big A-listers are missing. There has been no big name Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Shazam, Cyborg, Aquaman, etc movie. Green Lantern was also a terrible, terrible film. Its good they are putting things into motion now, and they may very well find success, but it won't come close to Marvel's. The original 2 Superman movies were also over 30 years ago! The Dark Knight Trilogy was their only pop-culture phenomenon in recent memory, and that was only 3 films.

I guess where I disagree with you Zoso is that I do think Wolverine will show up for Infinity War part 2, that's my gut feeling anyways. Even though Marvel doesnt't "need" him and the fact that Fox is doing OK means they don't "need" Marvel's help either doesn't mean it won't happen. Honestly I bet things are being discussed as we speak. We forget that Fox has Fantastic Four as well. X~Men might be doing ok on their own, but Fantastic Four is in worse shape than Spidey is, so I could see a trade off happening on that front. I don't think X~Men will ever completly go back to Marvel, even after Apocalypse, because Fox will just keep putting out films every few years just to keep the rights. Even if that means a compelete reboot sometime around 2022 or something. Which I don't think Marvel needs X~Men either, sure they would LOVE to have it back, but they don't need it. Not as bad as Fox does that's for sure. Plus the plethra of Mutants that belong under the X~Men umbrella, does give them something to play with.

But as I said earlier, Fantastic Four is a different beast. To my knowledge, Fox only has the rights to the actual FF, Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom, Galactus, and the Skrulls. That's why in the Avengers the aliens were Chitari, which was basically the same as the Skrulls, just a different name. Plus we forget that for MANY years the FF were arguably Marvel's most prized team. Sure their stock has fallen in recent years, but if Marvel is smart (and I believe they are) this is the barganing chip they will use to make deals for Wolverine and perhaps others. Although I don't think they need or want any other X~Men characters including Magneto. As great as he is, he doesn't really add anything to the Infinity story line that they are telling.
