20th Century Fox has closed a deal with director Neill Blomkamp to develop a new “Alien” movie, sources confirm.

The untitled sci-fi project is separate from “Prometheus 2,” which Fox is still making with Ridley Scott.

Blomkamp, who directed “District 9″ and the upcoming Sony feature “Chappie,” had been teasing the project in recent months but said the extra-terrestrial reboot was likely abandoned. It was supposed to star “Alien” veteran Sigourney Weaver.

But on Wednesday Blomkamp confirmed the tentpole was back on track at Fox.

“So I think this is officially my next film,” he confirmed on Instagram.

It’s unclear whether Weaver is still attached to the movie.

According to insiders, the new “Alien” takes place years after the “Prometheus” sequel. Scott is producing both films through his production company Scott Free.

“Prometheus,” also distributed by Fox, was “loosely based” on the “Alien” franchise and earned over $400 million worldwide. But the 3D movie opened to mixed reviews, and Fox hopes Blomkamp, who last directed “Elysium,” can take the franchise to the next level.

Born in South Africa, the 35 year-old Blomkamp is repped by WME.

This film looks like the Aliens sequel that Cameron and Ridley were collaborating on back in the late eighties and all I can say is, Amen Reverend. Hallelujah. Bring on the Biehn.

I like that we're at the point where we can ret-con past mistakes of franchise films and forget disappointing installments altogether. Beloved films like Terminator, Aliens and so on have all had unworthy entries and it's in the interest of moving forward that new films can step over the corpses of the #3 and #4 films to get back to what we love. We're ready to forget the cannon that disappointed us instead of trying to include it into the narrative and making a birds nest of the storyline.

Blomkamp's visual palette/production design is much more interesting than his directing technique, but I have no doubt he'll do the franchise proud.

I also really doubt that a Prometheus sequel will ever happen. I think Ridley Scott kinda lost interest and you can feel him handing Alien to Neil. "Here ya go mate, take that from me. Mind the tail."

Coming from someone who loved Prometheus...I'm more excited for this than Prometheus 2. All the artwork so far is killer - I have full faith the franchise will be in good hands with Blomkamp.

I'm the other way around; I've seen "Aliens" and what Blomkamp is proposing is just a rehash of what Cameron did. The reason it got greenlit by Fox is most likely because Aliens was such a monster hit and Hollywood nowadays is only in the business of remaking their cashcow blockbusters from the past.

I'd much rather see where Scott takes us with Prometheus 2, which seems a more ambitious project with Prometheus in essence being one big teaser.

But how the fuck are they going to explain the age of the actors?

Sigourney Weaver is almost 70

Given the end of Alien 3 and the fact that there was a 4th, I don't think the age factor is that big of a deal.

Seriously hope this isn't a reboot or any way contains references to AvP or is retconned for Prometheus. The first 4 films should be the only ones that are cannon at worst.

Shouldn't be a fucking 12 A certificate either.

I'm incredibly stoked for this, tbh. Probably more than I should be.

We've got premium talent working on the next Alien and Predator movies. It's a win. It's also a shame they'll probably never attempt another AvP film due to how horrible the last two were -- there was actually potential there if you ever followed the narrative and atmosphere of the videogames, but they just turned it into a dumb, generic piece of shit.

I still find them fun and enjoyable, but obviously nowhere up to par with the first two.

Again though, as much as this is great news and I'm excited, I do find myself interested in Prometheus 2 more. I loved Prometheus and the theories behind everything and how it all started and can't wait to see where they go with the next film.

So is this a remake or another Alien?

I really liked the Alien movies especially 1 and 2. They were a different sci fi movie for the time and not being able to see the Alien clearly made it all the more scary.

It's going to be a sequel to Aliens.

Is this confirmed anywhere? My post was just speculation on what I'd like it to be, but I haven't seen any press material stating it to be the case...

The setting for his Alien 5 supposedly takes place between the events of James Cameron's Aliens and David Fincher's Alien 3
