Indie Folk/Alt Country/Americana Thread

I see a lot of threads based around rock (which is expected) but I wanted to see if anyone here is into indie folk/alt country/neo southern rock. I'm talking stuff like Jason Isbell, Drive By Truckers, Wilco, Sturgill Simpson, Lydia Loveless, Whitey Morgan and the 78s, Blackberry Smoke, Heartless Bastards, Houndmouth, etc. Any fans?

Drive by Truckers are one of my favorite current bands. I love how their lyrics tell complex tales and build rich characters inside of just 3-4 minute songs.

Jason Isbell, formerly of DBT, just put out a great new track:

^ Kinda funny that most people know OCMS because of Darius Rucker. They put on a good show though, OCMS that is.

One of my other recent favs, more from 2014, was/is Hurray For The Riff Raff. Like an updated Patsy Cline but a little more dense

DBT are probably one of the best bands of the 2000's in my eyes. That stretch of Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, The Dirty South, is just great.

Hank 3

Brandi Carlile (awesome chick right here)

Cross Canadian Ragweed

Reverend Horton Heat

Shooter Jennings

I agree fully on DBT. I even like the stuff that came out after Isbell left, Go Go Boots is a sleeper, but yeah their peak was at the Dirty South. They are incredible live if you havent seen them, I'd make it happen

Hank III is great, his shows are like 4 hours long and he spans his entire career through different sets. he even has a quick metal set.

Lots of good bands listed here so far. I recently saw Lydia Loveless in a bar that holds like 200 people and she was great, I also think she was hammered. It only helped her performance, especially when she tried some Hank Sr. covers

Welp, I am now a fan of Lone Bellow. Thank you for that rec, Russ TCB.

Devil makes three are great. I consider them Sunday morning hangover music haha.

Houndmouth are one of my new favs of the genre. They've got a classic vibe to them

Loveless singing Hank Sr sounds about right. I'm sure she pulled it off good.

Man, when I saw Hank 3, after the show, he went backstage, changed shirts, came back out and started kicking it with everybody, taking pics, signing autographs. Half the club was still there and he stayed until he got to everybody. He didn't rush or anything. I know me and my crew talked with him for like 10 min. Just a down to earth cool cat. Much respect to that guy.

This is how it's done...

Right on, you're welcome. I absolutely adore them. They have 2 albums and both are great. The production on the second album (Then Came The Morning) is FAR better than the first, so I recommend listening to those studio versions before the ones on their self titled debut. The songs on the first LP are definitley worth checking out live though, as is their live show in general. They are nothing short of amazing & moving live as evidenced here:

Thanks for the responses/recommendations all. I have Lone Bellow and Brandi Carlisle on my spotify queue for today.

I have been big into Lera Lynn ever since the True Detective Season 2 trailer launched. She sings the song in the trailer that is yet to be released. Here's an actual released track of hers

And the TD trailer if you missed

Here's two really good bands on the rise, they're more blues/Americana/indie than country but I think you'll enjoy them

How can anyone not like a stand up bass. That was pretty cool.

Right? He has such a good warbly voice too, it doesn't stand out on that track as much as his others. Really mad that I missed him opening for Jack White last year :(

I wouldn't mind Jack White doing a full album of the whole folk, alt country, thing. When he does do it he nails it.

I recommend Ricky Skaggs to anybody. He's more bluegrass, traditional but he is a boss of a musician.
