I'm down with the message, but musically I think its one of Neil's weakest albums. The shows he's doing with Promise of the Real are phenomenal though. I think its his best live stuff since the Ragged Glory/Weld years. Willie Nelson's sons are great players- the last time I saw them they were playing with Bob Dylan and they really stole the show. I think Neil has spread himself thin with Pono, LincVolt, and all the activism in recent years but playing with a younger bands seems to really have reinvigorated him on the Rebel Content Tour.

Lukas can fucking RIP. I saw him at Farm Aid like a decade ago, when he was just a kid, and he played Texas Flood with Willie's band. It was one of the highlights of the night. If he could play like that when he was 16 or whatever, I can only imagine how insane he must be now.

I haven't given the album a proper listen yet, but what I've heard is definitely sub-par for Neil. Living With War wasn't exactly subtle, but the songs were still good and smart. These just don't meet the standard from what I've heard.

The great thing with Neil is that you never know what he's putting out next, and he's probably got 2 or 3 other albums lined up plus the constant work in progress Archives. The last book he did was also an audiobook.

I kind of like it when he's fired up and pissed off, even if it's not his best work. I just think when he did Greendale, I have no idea why he made that an arena tour.

Is that supposed to be Daryl Hannah on the cover?

Apparently he is having it off with Daryl Hannah. He broke up with Pegi which I never would have predicted.

Last year, yeah. And when David Crosby called Neil out for dumping his wife of several decades for a (slightly) younger woman with a reputation as a homewrecker, it ruined their relationship as well.

he apologized on the Howard Stern show for being jackass and also said he called Young and apologized

Here is the summary of the apology.

It is difficult to take Neil's family orientated, anti-Celeb ''Farmer Giles'' routine seriously, now that you know Naughty Neil has been rogering Daryl Hannah.

Over 50% of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce so I think you are being a little extreme trying to somehow tie Young's divorce to his concern with the environment and big Agro. They have no relation to each other.

I think you have misread me. Neil's image since the late 1970s has been of a sort of independent rural laird, surrounded by his family, friends/band mates and rural tranquility on his ranch in California. Neil was the anti-celebrity; you would never see Neil stumbling out of some nightclub with a trollop on his arm. You would never see Neil at a socialite gathering a la Jagger. Neil's is a story of domestic stability; Neil and Pegi seemed rock's only successful married couple, uniting in adversity when caring for their disabled son. Not only that but it is an image that Neil was keen to propagate, sharing his family vignettes with us on albums such as Harvest Moon, Prairie Wind and Silver and Gold.

Is it not a fair statement to say that that is now unsustainable?

The 50 percent figure includes repeat offenders. If you remove people with multiple divorces, the number is significantly lower. On top of which, the rate of divorce falls dramatically as the relationship lasts longer. If you're looking at couples like Neil and Peggy, both on their first marriage and together for 30 years? Dicorce rates are extremely low. Dicorce still isn't necessarily a sign of fault, but those stats don't work in favor of the "divorce is common" argument.

Divorce is divorce whether it is repeat offenders or fresh marriages. That being said you are correct in that the divorce rate seems to be slowing down but your comment that the longer people are married is not always true according to this NY Times article.

Looking at the graph people who were married in the 80's, as Young and his former wife were, evidently have an increasing divorce rate the longer their marriage lasts. In Young's demographic the longer the couples were married the higher the divorce rate. With Young having been married 36 years the divorce rate is actually around 50% if you believe the graph.

The man got divorced for reasons we have no visibility to and which is none of our business. He got involved with a 50 year old actress not a 20 something Playboy Playmate or stripper.

In any case I am still not understanding how his divorce damages his credibility as a environmental crusader? And also don't remember him ever crusading for family values like a hypocrite like Bill Cosby. Why all the hate?

According to Crosby his divorce is linked with Hannah. It is none of our business of course - you are correct - but if we are going to get ourselves involved in celebrity tittle tattle, it is a fairly low move, reminiscent of Jagger or Ron Wood at their worst. If it is true that Neil has had an affair, I suspect many of his friends and family, of Pegi also, were not very pleased. But we do not have the facts, as you say!

Do not know why you are persevering with the 'environmental crusader' straw man but Neil has always propagated an image of domestic, bucolic, tranquility? There is no way he can sustain that if he has had an affair with a z-list actress. He is little more than a Rolling Stone.

So your basing your opinion on a comment David Crosby made? really? You or I have no idea why Neil got divorced from his wife nor is it any of our business. You are projecting based on what is basically gossip from someone who happened to be close to both parties. It doesn't make what Crosby said the reality of the situation.

Neil Young to my knowledge never openly crusaded for family values. What are basing this on his music from the past? Can you provide examples why you feel this way?

Their marriage was not viable any longer for reasons only they know or should be concerned with. Divorce is a reality in today's world. IMHO once people got over the archaic public stigma created by religion they realized that it was o.k. to end an unhappy marriage and move on with their lives.

I am still not understanding why you feel Young is less credible about anything. I am a fan of his music and honestly never looked upon him as a spokesman for family values as he never openly crusaded for this. Do you like his music less because he had an affair and got divorced?

Now if it came out that he secretly owned Monsanto stock or big oil stock you might have a point that some type of credibility was damaged, as he is an environmental crusader, but family values? You lost me there mate.

You are misquoting me and using straw man arguments. I never said ''Young is a spokesman for family values''. I said that Neil projected an image for himself of domestic bliss, of roots, family and rural values. These are well trodden Young lyrical tropes; it does not take very far to find examples - try the entire Silver and Gold and Prairie Wind LPs for instance.

I have freely admitted that it is none of my business and that I am not privy to all the facts, but this is what we do, isn't it, discuss celebrity life-styles? It is an inherent human instinct just as much as a human failing.

PS

I am the world's biggest Rusty, bootlegs, live shows, everything. Lennon? GN'R? Jagger? Dylan? All these people can fuck right off when Shakey enters the room. Probably the only rock acts I revere more than Neil are Chuck and Little Richard, from the earlier generation.

Fair enough, guess as I get older I value my privacy more and more so it bothers me when people are judged on nothing more than hearsay gossip.

Neil divorced his wife of 30+ years and almost immediately started being seen publicly with Hannah. I don't think it's hearsay so much as Ocam's Razor.

When the news comes to you, how are you supposed to act? You do not have to actively seek out celebrity gossip, reading Hello magazine. I will give an example of a case where we do no the situation clearer: Ron Wood leaving Jo Wood for a Russian teenage strumpet. How is one supposed to act when you receive that news? You think Ron is a disgrace, a pathetic dirty old man, and automatically sympathise with his wife (his children by the way wouldn't talk to him for ages).

It might sound strange but I hope Neil's marriage was already on the wane before Daryl Hannah arrived, because a gross betrayal does change how we see him whether we try and ignore it or not.

How is one supposed to react? How about "who cares it is none of my business and has nothing to do with their music I enjoy? Neil Young and Ronnie Wood are not a family member or a friend of yours so how exactly does their personal life impact you?

I felt the same way about Axl when people scrutinized every aspect of their lives that had nothing to do with the music or the band. Their personal life is none of our business.

Crosby made some really ignorant public comments about Hannah which IMHO were uncalled for. He really had no need to say the things he did in public even if he believed them and I don't blame Neil for being pissed. At least in his case he has some investment in the situation as he has known Neil and his exwife for 30+ year while we have no investment in the situation to be passing judgment.

They shouldn't do interviews, biographies and put their pictures on album covers then. None of this has anything to do with the music so why bother?

What does any of that have to do with anyone passing judgment on his divorce? First of all we have no idea why the man got divorced nor should we care. Maybe his marriage went south long ago and he finally had enough to make the split and second he is not a family member so it does not directly impact us.

Music is one of my passions and probably my main hobby at this point. I constantly listen to music and read a lot of biographies related to musicians and bands. In some cases I think they have fascinating lives, like Keith Richards, as it is interesting to me how they came to be where they are but I don't get emotionally involved in their personal lives as it really is not my place to judge their behavior.

The Howard Stern interview with David Crosby was fantastic as he is a very open person and I learned a lot about the dynamics of his career and how some of the CSNY songs came about but when Howard brought up the subject even David admitted his comment was out of place and basically none of his business. He said the important thing was Neil was happy with his place in life right now which is all that matters in the grand scheme of things

Listen this debate is useless as you and I obviously disagree on the subject so we are not going to change each others minds. We will just have to agree to disagree..........
