Moderation Discussion

No doubt this thread will also get chucked into another sub-forum that nobody ever reads, but I'm putting it here for now to see if others share my sentiments. There's nothing more annoying than taking the time to construct a lengthily and intelligent reply to a thread only to find that within half an hour the thread has either been moved to another forum nobody ever visits or been deleted altogether.

This board used to be a breath of fresh air, a place where sane adults could discuss the band without fear of Jarmo's ego-trip moderating the shit out of every conversation. Nowadays, this board is way over-moderated. We're all fucking adults here, do we really need our conversations to be so heavily moderated?

I have no problems with the moderating here and I disagree with the statement that everybody here (acts) as adults.

Same here.

I think it's great that internet diarrhea isn't tolerated here anymore and the collective IQ of the forum rose dramatically when the last great cupcake was sent packing.

Go look at the drivel peddled on some other GNR forums...

Actually the percentage of threads and posts moderated here compared to the amount posted is pretty low. If anything we give a bit too much leeway at times which usually backfires in the end.

I'm guessing you are talking about the thread Forsaken hid earlier? Stuff like that never ends well, if we leave it we just finish up with a load of reports to deal with anyway. Most people here are capable of discussing things like adults but once a certain tone has been set in a thread (often by a small number of posters) then common courtesy is often lost and everyone piles in, rolling with the punches.

The band can be discussed critically here but there is a difference between critical and rude, moderating that fine line isn't easy.

I'm not going to lock or move this for the moment because it is worth hearing opinions on the tone of the board every so often.

Heavily moderating a public forum is just pure vanity and ego on the part of the moderators.

Moderation imo is largely wanted by and user driven. A fair proportion is instigated from the report system, I disagree that we moderate heavily but obviously you are entitled to your perception of it. If we moderated at a lower level than we do then the board would become unusable for the vast majority of posters.

Tell that to Jarmo and HTGTH. I always appreciated MyGNR for being the antithesis of that dreadful board, but there has definitely been a marked increase in the amount of threads being deleted or worse, conversations being edited.

There was a thread a couple of days ago called "The people who say they like Chinese Democracy." Granted it was started to deliberately provoke a reaction, but hey, it's a discussion board and it's a bit of fun and it had actually developed into a quite interesting discussion and then it completely vanished. Nothing wrong with a hearty bit of provocation.

The last post in that thread before it was locked was yours. You began the post with...

'So many cunts on this board claiming their opinion is the only valid one.'

Could you have possibly phrased that a little better?

The rest of your post was a reasonable discussion, why open it with that? Occasionally I hide posts that are in the main part fine but will have something offensive in the middle, sometimes I'll edit it but mostly due to time constraints it will get hidden.

Well really hes used a naughty word but theres nothing that bad about whats being expressed, so he said the word 'cunts', everyone knows what he means, is it that big an issue, its used on this forum all over the gaff by tons of people. This appears to be what Towelie is getting at.

Just to clarify i got no problem with moderating here, i think you're all LUFFLY, just sticking up for my mate Towelie here cuz, well, you know what us Morrissey fans are like, we like to blush in shower cubicles together etc.

It may not be a popular opinion on here (too many members sleeping with the enemy I suspect), but the way I see it mods should stay out of any and all discussions unless someone is being directly offensive to an individual, eg racist, homophobic etc. Or if someone posts a lot of irrelevant bullshit. But a bit of hearty debate should be fine. I was not aware that bad language was frowned upon on this board, perhaps MyGNR should start starring out offensive words on the off-chance it may offend someones delicate sensibilities.

I think the guys are pretty transparent about the way they moderate, and the mod log feature makes it easy to see who removed a post if you want to query it further.

They do a great job, it's not easy to moderate and make consistent calls 24/7! Nobody gets it right 100% of the time, and it's nice when people remember that when contacting a mod and asking why a post was removed.

I think it's okay these days, I dont have any complaints. It's especially good compared to eras in the past and I particularly like that banning is now used only in special circumstances. I'd rather have fewer bans and more posts deleted or moved than see the posts left intact and the poster banned after two strikes. Granted the circumstances are different: if Downzy banned people as often as Madison used to he would run out of posters by christmas.

This is what happens when you start giving women power.

Taking milk from babies is next on my agenda.

No, darling. Women give milk to babies.

See what I mean? Let them make decisions and it goes haywire.

It was a Thatcher reference actually. Sweetheart. :-P
