Chinese only failed in the US but did well overseas probably because of the title. * Platinum in sixteen countries and gold in sixteen countries. In the US, kinda intersting, CD passed the 500K shipped mark on January 7, 2009, then it was certified Platinum by the RIAA on February 3, 2009 (we all know it did not). According to wikipedia, "After Best Buy clearanced the album for $2 in April 2011 it re-entered the US Billboard 200 again in the week ending April 3, 2011, selling 3,200 copies, enough for the 198th position. At that date, the album had sold 614,000 copies in the US according to Nielsen Soundscan. In the UK, it has sold 365,899 copies as of July 2014." Still hard to believe it reached 1 million in the US (real platinum). It never reached 1 million in the US, if you have read what I have been writing it has sold "less than 750k" in the US, by 2015. So if you are right on the 33 % domestic that results in 2.3 million in total global sales. I doubt you are right with that 33 %, though, it doesn't make sense when we look at record buying demographics and know of GN'R's popularity in other markets (like South America and Asia). Silent Jay
2 minutes ago, SoulMonster said: I did not get that logic. How did you arrive at that number? How did you arrive at that number? The 3 million number is so ubiqiutous, where do people have it from? They heard it spome years ago and now it is stuck. Again, looking at certifications (platinum, gold, silver, etc) reported throughout 2009 some people calculated what it must have sold by then. Tthe problem is that those certifications were for both shipped and sold, and that the certifications took place at various dates. E.g. if it sold to gold by February 2009, after only a few months in the market, it is reasonable to assume it sold significantly more by the end of 2009. Anyway, by doing this these guys arrived at the number of 2.8 millions, and then people assume it has sold just a few hundred thousands since then so we are just over 3 millions. But there is a LOT of assumptions here and weaknesses in that method.... Red herrings followed by ad hominem, nice Diesel. Look again at the posts. GnRFrance did calculated all the certification early 2009. It was 2.8 million. But look at my post earlier, CD is platinum in the US but grossly sold 650K. How convenient But we know that the UK sales is about half of the US sales. How does that add up with US alone taking 20-25 % of the market cap? That would mean that US and UK together has about 30-40 % of the market, does that make sense when you know of the markets that still remain (Germany, Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina, Scandinavia, Japan, Canada, etc)? And I undertsand but that's all we got and I think it's fair enough. It's not like mojobox office. Even Angus did not know if he sold 100 million or 200 million albums in Stern. The most important thing was the selling was the strongest ever. All I have is by 2014: 450K UK. 75K France. 650K US. Not much more than 2009. You can understand than Chinese was never meant to be a big seller force throughout the years.

And I undertsand but that's all we got and I think it's fair enough. It is hopeless if you want to estimate sales by 2015. I mean, you have no idea how much it had actually sold by the end of 2009. If you add up the estimates sales from that list you get 2.8 million but have no idea when that occured, since those numbers are from different dates. The only thing we can quite safely say is that it probably reached 2.8 millions some time in 2009. But 6 months in either direction has a lot to say so early after market launch. Maybe the record was still peaking in a market when certification for that market was published? We have no way of knowing. And it is not all we got. We also have actual sales numbers for US and UK in 2015. Real numbers, not estimated from what was shipped. Actual sales numbers, close to where we are today. From that, well, this is my opinion at least, you can arrive at a much better estimation for global sales per 2015, than by using that hairy 2.8 million number. Nosaj Thing
It sold 3 million. 3.5 million if you're generous with the numbers. Any more than that is delusion fabricated by sad losers. You only find godawful records for 99 cents at Dollar Tree, Chinese Democracy being one of them (and with the original "Best Buy Exclusive" sticker on it). Before that, Best Buy had it on clearance for $1.99 and since nobody bought it, they sold it in bulk to 99 cents stores. I feel bad for Best Buy but it's their own fault for thinking that turd of a record could have been a success.

wasted
3-5 is pretty bad anyway compared to the 90s. But 3 mil means 30 mil for the label. Well 14 mil for the US. But then another 16 mil from worldwide sales. With 16 mil profit you can see why they didn't give them 5 mil for a video. I think the sales remain the same at best right now for a reunion record. But they can keep the over heads lower. So the label could make 30 mil. Uncharted 4 sold 2.7 mil in it's first week. And that's at $30 a pop. So they prob made a 100 mil in a week. Since CD never charted again after that first month, it's pretty easy to figure out how many copies the album sold. You can sell 8,000 copies and make the American top 40. CD hasn't been charging in various countries randomly for the last seven years Why do some people not understand that?
Rustycage
I'll need to find the original topic that this spawned from. These gold and platinum figures, in most of the countries, are based on shipments to retailers and not sells to the public. Despite that, arguing with the OP is for fools. At the very best scenario, CD sold 1.8 million by 2011 since there confirmed one million left over at Best Buy. There are no other certifications from the countries that certify based on shipments. There is no proof that anything else sold. Everything else in this blast from the past lol worthy topic is bullshit. Cya.

Nope, the constant ine up changes, lack of label support (for now) and Axl's laziness are the key factors. Btw nowadays the big money is on the big tours, not on the albums. of course on a normal band you'll have new albums (or more albums than one in 2 decades) but this is not a normal band Edited May 26, 2016 by Strange Broue
RONIN
What stalled CD II is that Interscope pulled the plug. It's clear that they pretty much forced Axl to release the damn thing and cut off funding in late '06. When it flopped, I'm guessing they gave him an ultimatum to either reunite with Slash or CD 2 would be shelved. I guess they didn't see a point in releasing another album to an indifferent public. wasted
Hopefully Axl agreed to a reunion only if the label agree to put out CD II.
