Good history on the Teddy Boys

I'm pretty sure beer and ampehetemine was their fuel!

Really though, its all a load of cobblers i think, crowd mentality. A bunch of people judging whether they wanted to be your friend based on how well certain clothes suited you, it really is wonderfully ridiculous. What if you couldn't afford a tonic suit or a 50 quid leather jacket? I suppose there was less of the punk era poverty in them days so working class kids could save up for this sort of clobber or else get it on tick.

They did not really drink. Drink is a downer and they liked to dance all night. Also alcohol was associated with working class loutishness and mods saw themselves as sophisticated and Euro chic. They all had 9-5 office jobs and spent their lunch breaks shopping for clothes. That is the strange thing about the mods: they were not social drop outs and misfits. They did not rebel against society. To facilitate a lifestyle centered around materialism one needed a job of a certain stature.

One interesting thing is that mods tended to be urban dwellers whereas rockers were more provincial. The center point for rockers were twenty four hour transport cafes. They would spend their nights racing between cafes and listening to music in those cafes. Their role models were Brando, Dean and Gene Vincent. There were really two type of rockers however, a type centered on motorcycle culture and another type who were not really bothered about the bikes but just liked Gene Vincent and the image.

Looking at early pictures of the Beatles is virtually like looking at a history of 1950s-60s youth movements. When Lennon and Paul started out as the Quarry Men who played skiffle (which was the Ted's music of choice before rock n' roll arrived).

Slim Jim ties, hair, Lennon's drape jacket - yip, full on Teds,

They then switched to the leathers of rockers. I think a lot of Teds converted themselves into Rockers circa. 1960,

NB they still have the pompadour hair.

They then adopted the Euro hairstyles in Germany, which also were being adopted by mods at a similar period.

NB Best kept his pompadour and pulled all the birds apparently which pissed off McCartney.

Then when Brian put them in the suits, it definitely pushed them closer to the mods, although the cut of the suit was too conventional and British for the mods who favoured Italian suits (Mods tended to not like the Mersey 'beat' groups anyhow).

You could argue that The Beatles went from being Teddy Boys, to Rockers, to Mods haha.

The Beatles audition for Billy Fury, not sure what the style is...

They have their pompadours but they seem to be experimenting with an all black suited uniform - good look actually. Even Lennon gets star struck!

They were on impresario Larry Parnes' radar and instead of Billy Fury, he hired them to back a guy named Johnny Gentle and did some dates together. Some people would have been like "hell no" but any experience is good experience and it got them to experience touring. But once that tour was over, they were back to trying to make it as a band.
