BREAKING: Scott Weiland dead

Terribly sad news about Scott Weiland's death.

I don't know much about STP but I DO love some Velvet Revolver esp. Weiland's 'For a Brother' about his younger brother, Michael, who died from, I believe, drug-related causes. I find the dreamy bridge really haunting and even more since SW's death was announced.

Much prefer Libertad from which this song is taken, to Contraband but I seem to be in a minority on that.

Perla made some derogatory remarks about VR, saying something like it wasn't Slash's best moment/work. I don't think they are amazing (my taste( but I think some tracks are truly outstanding.

VR was an ok band its just hard to live up to expectations when your form a super group like that

i think Contraband sounds a bit dated these days. it sounds like an early 2000 album.

I spun Contraband for the first time in years after Scott's death and totally agree. It shocked me just how OLD it sounded, despite only having 11 years on it. Definitely didn't stand the test of time.

I do like 'Fall to Pieces' a lot, though it sounds like Boston's 'Feel Like Making Love' when it starts out. 'Slither' is good. But there are quite a few tracks I really like on Libertad, including 'Mary Mary' and their rendition of The ELO song, 'Can't Get it Out of My Head' though it was slated in Classic Rock.

Yeah, Libertad holds up a lot better for sure, and I think it would've been a really interesting stepping stone if they had made a third album - there was still some good potential there.

Man, the dude can't even crack a real smile in any of those pictures. He just looks so...sad.

Mary and Scott's kids pull a no show. Slash and Duff give Eulogies.

Interesting article I read today... probably more on Rolling Stone... but this pretty much explains why Mary and his kids didn't show. I don't blame Mary at all... frankly:

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2015/12/09/scott-weiland-ex-wife-pens-emotional-letter-are-most-devastated-that-chose-to/?intcmp=ob_article_sidebar_video&intcmp=obinsite

I can understand her not wishing to attend, I hope his children made their own choice about it though.

The kids appear to both be teenagers -- that's old enough to formulate valid opinions on how they feel about it, IMHO. I'd be surprised if it *wasn't* their choice to opt out. It sounds as though Weiland wasn't really a parent to them and they weren't really in touch all that much.

And I totally get why Mary wouldn't attend, definitely. Is it really a thing to go to your ex's funeral anywhere?

It's no biggie. Not really a thing. I mean... yeah, he was technically the father of her children and the man she chose to spend years with, but he should have been more responsible as a junkie. You reap what you sow.

Mary is a lovely person. So what if she didn't attend the funeral? life goes on.

On December 4, former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland was found dead on his tour bus in Minnesota. It's now been determined that Weiland overdosed from a combination of cocaine, MDA, and alcohol, as TMZ reports. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined that asthma and heart disease were also factors, as well as Weiland's history of addiction. Shortly after Weiland's death, his Wildabouts bandmate Tommy Black was arrested and charged with fifth degree felony possession of drugs. TMZ also reports that Xanax, sleeping pills, Viagra, and drugs to treat bipolar disorder were found on the band's tour bus, but those drugs played no part in Weiland's death.

yeah, in most of the civilized countries

Sorry, absolutely never heard of that anywhere; not in the USA or Europe. Usually an ex is just that -- an ex. You're not involved in their life anymore. They're not involved in yours. No reason whatsoever to go to their funeral.

I wish I was surprised. What a wasted talent, chased down by his demons long before his time :(

Cocaine, MDA and alcohol. I'm amazed he lived as long as he did.

I thought it'd be alcohol and xanax that did him in. He was a slurring zombie the last few years, at least since 2011, and you could tell he was really damaging himself irreparably.

I wonder if Tommy Black is now facing manslaughter charges of some sort: since the cocaine was found in his possession they may try to pin Scott's death on him. Who knows, though. Pure speculation on my part.

And btw: one day with your kids to go to their father's funeral, and then you continue your life is not too much of a hassle is it? to give that one day. In my opinion, there's no excuse.

I don't know her, I don't know shit about it, but I know what you don't ever do. You don't pull shit like the letter and a no show at the funeral. That's fucked, no matter how you look at it.

And junkies have a disease. That's real. A lot is out of their control. It's not like he was beating the shit out of her or the kids. He continued to be a junkie, and he died because of it. Talking shit about him so soon is fucked as well.

David Spade didn't go to Chris Farley's funeral; not because he didn't care about him, but because he did care about him. People deal with things in different ways.

No shit. But I'm going by what she said in the letter as well. I don't know this woman. I just think she's a cold cunt based on her behavior. She's nothing like David Spade.

It's really not that difficult y'know, as a combo.

I hope not. That would be pretty dumb. I mean, Scott knew what he was doing. Nobody forced him to do drugs. He surrounded himself with enablers. Even his wife was obviously an enabler. "He drinks socially, but he doesn't do drugs." She was either completely glueless or in denial.

Slow suicide, that what it was.

I'm listening to some of the Original VR demos right now. They're available on a bootleg called Lethal Injection. Loving the Alien and Fall to Pieces are hard to listen to. The former features some of Scott's best vocals.

It's such a shame how everything played out. This guy continually sabotaged himself at every turn.

It's a bit much. You don't know her, but you want to judge her based on this one letter, during a difficult time. Okay.

What I read in that letter is a woman who was angry at Scott, the industry, at addiction. Angry for her kids, for herself and for what they all went through. Some people get angry when grieving. Especially when the circumstances are so tragic and painful. That's not to say she is a "cunt", grief doesn't have to be nice. Maybe question why Rolling Stone chose to publish the letter, but the feelings contained within are not inappropriate imo.

It's sad that he's gone, but I get why she pushed back at all the eulogising. I felt the same after Amy Winehouse died. We all saw her death coming, to point where it was a running joke and spectacle. Her final shows were terrible, and then when she went, the eulogising immediately started up in the music press. There's something wrong about this cycle.

You put your anger aside at least for the time being. You don't write a letter about your dead ex husband, the father of your children and then pull a no show at the funeral. It's fucked. I don't think it's much. Not very human imo. I don't need to know her. It's basic shit.

I first got into Scott as a 13-14 year old discovering rock music with Velvet Revolver. I didn't know anything about STP, or even much about GNR. To me, seeing Slither on MTV changed my life. Seeing Scott and Slash made me go "whoah, so that's what rock n roll is." So most of what I remember of Scott on a personal level will be that time, and frankly the contraband era appears to be the best time of his life. He was clean (supposedly, if not that was the best he ever did at hiding it) and pissed off again. The Sex Pistols were another band pivotal to my formative years, and I saw a lot of that attitude in VR, that sort of defiance against rock norms which at the time was either Green Day or straight Emo. It was pure bad ass rock n roll. There was real danger. Any one of them could fly off the rails at any moment. For me, it was as impactful an experience as someone growing up in hair metal and seeing Axl in welcome to the jungle. Scott in that era is what I see as a frontman in my head, Contraband is what I hear when I think of the possibilities of modern rock music. Now I know that rationally, Contraband had some issues, a bit of Frankenstein syndrome where it literally sounds like pieces of everyone's past welded together, but it was important to me. That's the Scott I think of and will remember, the one that miraculously was granted a second act and introduced a 14 year old me to rock n fucking roll.

^^^^Agreed. We've seen it with lots of folks. Cobain, Pac, Layne Staley, many others. We pretty much watch them die a slow death.

They need to get him off the road.

Yup

I'm quoting this from an old thread. Can't seem to make the thread show up tho. Anyway, many of us right here, six months ago, called this. I know cats like Scott. Addiction is an ugly, ugly thing. Some people are just impossible to help. You can only do so much for someone. Damn shame. Been bumping a lot of STP and VR lately for that guy. RIP.

Been watching recent and semi-recent interviews with Scott tonight and man...besides the drug shit, he just looks and sounds utterly depressed in everything I've watched. I think that's what really did him in, honestly, the depression - the drugs were just a symptom of that. The dude did heroin and all kinds of other drugs for years and years, decades even, and didn't overdose till he was 48 - few addicts make it half that long. It's sad to see someone just totally give up that way.
