Pantera’s Phil Anselmo Shouted ‘White Power’ And Snapped A Nazi Salute During A Concert

Phil Anselmo of the legendary heavy-metal and sludge-metal acts Pantera and Down may have added more fuel to the long-gestating rumor that he’s an outright racist. At the end of Dimebash, a festival celebrating late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, Anselmo performed “Walk” and then snapped off a Nazi salute while shouting “white power” at the crowd.

The crowd can be heard loudly booing when Anselmo starts giving a Nazi salute and laughing as he’s escorted from the stage. Outside the niche subcultures catering directly to that sort of ideology, metalheads have a pretty long history of shaming the racists in their ranks. This isn’t the first time that Anselmo has spouted this sort of rhetoric, so we’ll see what happens.

For his part, Anselmo maintains that he was only kidding. In a YouTube comment underneath the upload, Anselmo says he was making a joke about the white wine he was drinking.

“Ok folks, I’ll own this one, but dammit, I was joking, and the “inside joke of the night” was because we were drinking f*cking white wine, hahaha…

Of all f*cking things.

Some of y’all need to thicken up your skin.

There’s plenty of f*ckers to pick on with a more realistic agenda.

I f*cking love everyone, I fucking loathe everyone, and that’s that.

No apologies from me.

PHA ’16”

Is that enough to squash this fire? It may not be. This seems pretty incriminating for the metal legend.

Here is the Video

-----

What says you? Is he a racist or was he "drunk" so he gets a pass? His buddy seemed to try to lift his other arm to make it look better right after he took the mic, Phil's voice traveled though.

After watching the video I honestly believe he gives the Sieg Heil (or "Nazi salute" as people seem to call it these days) because they are making him leave the stage.

He's PHILCORE, and probably got angry having somebody tell him he has to get off.

Or he could be a fucking Nazi, I don't know or care really but I don't think chucking the odd "Nazi salute" equates to being a Nazi.

Give Uncle Phil a fucking break. Wah wah wah. It's fine for everyone to make racist jokes everyday but someone in the spotlight does it so let's hang him high. Fuck off.

To be fair i dont think enough people care about Phil Anselmo to hang him out to dry, its not like hes gotten a Hulk Hogan-esque backlash, no one gives a shit that some old metaller is a nazi, most people just assume that about metallers in general

There's a reason why 99.9% of Metal is all white.

Do tell. :)

Because it caters to a very specific demographic and in doing so expands its odds for being more likely to have a more significant ratio of white racists listening to it. There's a reason why you don't see much but white kids at Metal gigs, quite frankly most people look at most Metal bands and see a pretty singular stereotype of what, to them, represents the white redneck demographic. Similar issues with hip hop, despite its massive white audience it is pretty much considered a black concern and as such white people get a harder time in it, are subject to more scrutiny and have to mind their P's and Q's regarding certain things or they find themselves lumped with an Iggy Azaelea type reputation. And in the hip hop community and amongst a great many of it's stalwarts you are much more likely to hear some shit that white people might consider a bit (or a lot) prejudiced towards them. Punk is a pretty close equivalent in that sense although perhaps a little less severely than metal, as a brown skinned person who once had a tendency of scooting along to gigs patronised by a bunch of rowdy whiteboys i can confirm that you've got to have a thick skin in those kinds of situations, particularly with some of the older bands whoose audience tend to be prey to a lot of older attitudes about certain things.

Honestly, who gives a fuck. If he's up there denouncing black people that's one thing, but I don't see the difference between this and Mexican UFC fighters with Brown Pride tattoos.

Because a minority does so to assert its identity, a majority doing the same thing is asserting it's superiority. Black people shouting about black power, from the perspective of a dominant majority is almost cute, when a dominant majority seeks to assert it's identity, it's already an asserted and dominant identity, it becomes something else, something sinister.

There was a boxer over here, black guy, who once said, when asked why he didn't make more of a point of his racial identity that he didn't make more it 'because it suggests that there's something wrong with it', it's the preserve of those who have been maligned or forgotten or ignored or not well regarded to begin with, after all why would you need to assert or propagate or impose a sense of pride if it already existed?
