When you sing a song to yourself does it not feel good nailing it, or if someone does that and with a guitar and gets something out of nailing it, like playing the exact notes than that's not a waste of time. When you play the exact notes, it's like singing the original melody and can really make the player understand the specific approach and it helps with composing and many other things.
