Influence is a fluid concept, so rather than simply tipping our caps to the legends (again), we set out to quantify which are the biggest influences on today’s music scene.

Considering the music and vibe that's popular amongst 2016's younger generation... it's true. Like NME said, regurgitating the same list of legends is kinda dumb, especially when the majority of the younger generation listen to music that takes more inspiration from 1990-onwards.

I would probably put more hip-hop/rap artists higher up on the list.

Bullshit.

So Hole are more influential to the younger generations music in 2016 than Michael Jackson? I don't buy that for one second.

Not saying I agree with every placement on this list, but in music and just in general, that whole vibe is more present in today's youth that Michael Jacksons's. No one's saying that Hole has influenced music overall more than MJ, but qualities associated with them and their style (outside of their sound) can be seen more.

How old are you?

31. Why?

I don't agree. Name one relevant artist or band making music in 2016 that has been influenced by Hole? What vibe is it you talk about that "can be seen more"? Rock bands as a general rule are largely irrelevant to most people under the age of 20.

Practically every mainstream popstar today cites Jackson as an influence, and it can be seen everywhere.

The whole list is pretentious and smacks of 90s rock critic hipsterdom. I bet the person who came up with it wears Doc Martens and a Bauhaus t-shirt.

Because age kind of matters when you're talking about what younger people like.

Vibe, as in style, look, fashion etc. I'd say there's two over-reaching 'aesthetics' that are popular nowadays: those being the more instagram focused look, aligning with R&B and rap; then the more 'alternative' style that fits in with the look and style (that Hole holds some qualities of, along with Radiohead, The Smiths etc.) Although they tend to crossover a lot too.

It's fine that every popstar cites MJ as an influence, I'm not saying they're lying. But I just don't seem to see it as much as you do.

You're the one getting mad about some random af list online, sounding a bit pretentious because it's not set the way you want it to be.

So Hole was more influential than Nirvana? I would like to know why. I am missing some serious names and certainly in the rap/hiphop department. I am older, so maybe my judgement is clouded, but this list sucks. Also bands on that list were highly influenced by The Beatles, like Nirvana or the Velvet  underground.

Maybe it's a list for the bands now and for the USA, cause I don't even know some bands:shrugs:

The Slits (one of my favourite bands!) is on the list, i defy anyone to find any kids today that know fuck all about The Slits, I've been on this forum for 12 years and in that whole time i only ever, despite banging on about them incessantly, come across two people who've even heard of The Slits (one of em was Dalsh).

Generally though, i think I'm too old to give a fuck

Of all time or for current artists?

If all time, then absolutely not.  Another effort by NME to hooray for tolerance! their readers.

If it's meant for more of contemporary times, then maybe.  Admittedly I'm not well versed in what's happening in music these days, but come on, any list that doesn't have The Beatles at the top of the list of all time most influential bands isn't worth much consideration.  I've never even heard of The Gun Gun Club or The Breeders and am completely unfamiliar with the work of Kate Bush or Nick Cave (though I'm familiar with their names).

To be influential, one would think most would have to have heard your music.  I love Brian Jonestown Massacre, but does anyone here honestly think most people are familiar with them?

I do like Joy Division so high up in the list though. But there are not that many people who know them nowadays, unless my age.

It's kind of a pretentious list. Like trying hard avoiding everything close to trashy. However trashy can still be influential.?

Wouldn't suprise me, the maker of this list is my age or a few years older and in his teens totally New Wave. It was a mix of punk and the newer, more mellow, bands like Joy Division, The Cure, The Smiths, Siouxsie etc. We dressed in black, high hair, funny make up, look I am so intelligent and different, being all complicated?. Anyway wouldn't suprise me one bit.
