Izzy making an Adidas jacket look good.

I don't think Axl and Izzy are friends per se. Just guys who have known each other a long time. I think the closest Axl will get to a "friend" is Beta. Steven is too much of a child to have an adult friendship with and I have my doubts that Slash and Izzy ever really liked each other (profile pic notwithstanding). Even when they talk about each other nicely it seems kind of cold. But Izzy and Duff seemed to be in it for the long haul.

I find the whole band of brothers thing a bit weird when it comes to rock bands or any band. As they get older with responsibilities and different priorities the dynamics and relationship change. I like a lot of my work colleagues but I don't socialise with them out of work, when I was younger maybe. sometimes I go on work trips and we meet in the evening for dinner, but I don't have to, nor would I be offended if others choose not too. I see a touring band as a similar thing, they just have to spend an extended amount of time together.

The current internal relationships we know nothing about, we can assume their has to be a level of friendship to make things gel on stage, their seems to be a lot of respect for each other, some have history which often cements a relationship, but I don't need them to be best buds and I would be surprised if they felt the need to be.

The Izzy/Band relationship, on the surface appears to have cooled and I have commented before that I find it disappointing but I am making an assumption about the situation. I have no idea if they are talking or not, the band of brothers was over in 1990 now grown men with their owns lives who are not obligated to be supportive of each other. No matter how much I would like to see it.?

I'm just going to use that Aerosmith video that I posted awhile back as an example. Joe & Steven take jabs at each other all the time in the press and I doubt they hang out unless it has something to do with the band. But when they're on stage there is chemistry there even after 40+ years as a band. They're laughing. Having fun. Same with the Stones, U2, AC/DC, Metallica, and a ton of other big bands. With guns it just seems like people punching in for their 9 to 5 job. I have to give credit to Axl though at least he seems to be trying to interact with everyone. Slash just seems very cold and checked out to me compared to all the other bands he's played with. It could just be my perspective but something just feels off with them. Hopefully the more shows they do, the more comfortable they will get. At the end of the day though, they sound good and that's all that really matters. :shrugs:

@Darkenchantress The 5 th photo down in your post, do we know what it's from? I've seen it many times but only just considered Matt is in the photo. Its later than when Izzy filled for Gilby so when was it taken?

I really thought it was from when he filled for Gilby, isn't it then?

I don't think that there can be a parallel between Guns N' Roses and any of these bands. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry had split for a relatively short period of time, but the fallout wasn't even nearly as deep and complicated as the GnR one (Steven Tyler himself has said it in regards of what happened between Slash and Axl), and all the other bands you mentioned have been continuously together, which means that at least they can still work together although in most cases the members are not best buddies and likely they don't even get along. GnR were like that during the UYI tour; most of the time they didn't get along, but they still had great chemistry on stage (with the exception of Izzy on the second half of 1991, where it's obvious from the shows' footage that there was no interaction between him and the others). But after that it all became so dramatic that Axl and Slash didn't even speak to each other for twenty years and of course there were all those public statements that everybody knows.

I think that the reason Axl seems to be the one who's trying to interact the most is that he wouldn't do the reunion if he wasn't emotionally ready for it; before that it was a big deal to him even to be at the same place with Slash, let alone share the stage and talk to him. Slash, as he said, didn't think much about it, he said to himself "I'll just go up there and play". And this is what he does, but he seems to become more comfortable as the tour progresses.

I had a lot of fun at the show I went to but I kept my expectations in check. I knew I was seeing a giant corporate rock show and didn't expect a setlist change or for Slash and Axl to rub up against each other. I expected it to be cold with very little interaction and it was. It wasn't a time machine to 1987 but tell that to the 50 year old woman in a stone washed denim skirt next to me who just relentlessly  flashed Duff. Or the little kid (12, maybe?) behind me who lost her shit when Slash started playing SCOM. I still had a great time and am paying way too much to do it again next summer. By the way, i've been hard on him in this thread but I would reccomend to anyone that they go Duff side- I honestly think that between Duff and Slash Duff is easily the more charismatic performer of the two- lots of eye contact with the audience etc. Slash is a human that is mobile and stuff so you'll still get to see him just fine, but live Duff is where it's at.

I think this is a misconception.

It seems to me that Duff and Izzy just liked to make music together and hang out sometimes, because they're both chill, laid-back dudes who share common interests.

But out of all the GNR guys, Duff is hands down closest with Slash. These two are basically family at this point. They buy each other shirts, have family celebrations together, their kids call them "Uncle Duff/Slash"...

And throughout GNR history Duff has always sided with Slash and went along with whatever Slash wanted.

IIRC, Izzy didn't want a singer in the early days of VR when he was still involved in the project and Duff wouldn't have minded a band with him and Izzy singing, but Slash (likely for money related reasons) insisted they needed a real singer. Obviously Slash got what he wanted and Duff went along with it, so Izzy left and they ended up with Scott Weiland.

And it's more or less the same story again now: Slash now wants Axl (he's been trying to get back into Axl's good graces for years after all), and Duff is again choosing Slash's side over Izzy's or anyone else's, so don't expect Duff to stick up for Izzy's interests anytime soon.

Not to mention the fact that Duff has been an asshole to Izzy in the past as well. He never engaged in as much shit-talking as Slash or Axl, but I do remember him making comments like "Axl's guitar playing is very similar to Izzy's, though Axl is a lot more talented musically than Izzy." That may be true (or not, depending on your taste I guess), but it's still a really shitty thing to say about your former band mate.

I love Duff, but the guy is not a saint either (none of them are, as I keep saying) and I don't really share the confusion about Duff not sticking up for Izzy more. The guy has been Slash's BFF ever since Slash dumped Steven way back then and that likely won't change anytime soon.

Good points. There was a period though when Slash and Duff were at odds, around the time Duff's pancreas exploded and some time after. Duff was closer with Axl then and had sided with him about the Snakepit album; his quote about Axl having more musicality than Izzy as a rhythm guitarist is from that period as well.

Yeah, and there also seemed to be some tension between them during the VR days when Slash supposedly called Duff spineless and so on. But all things considered (lol) they've had a pretty stable relationship since the 80s.

About Axl, I actually think Duff would pick Axl over Izzy too if he had to choose (and he did already pick Axl and Slash over Izzy for this reunion apparently). If you read Duff's books or listen to his interviews, Duff talks a lot about Axl, usually in a way emphasizing some special bond or emotional connection they share, how he 'gets' Axl, etc., while he usually doesn't talk much about Izzy and if he does it's usually in the context of recounting some factual events. No tear-jerking or heart-warming moments there.

And yeah, like you said, Axl and Duff did have periods where they were pretty close as well and even during the cold war years, Axl could never bring himself to hate Duff the way he hated Slash lol

Hmm... I always assumed that the lack of Izzy stories in Duff's book (and kinda in general) was due to Izzy being a private guy and the other guys respecting his privacy. But now that you've said that... I'm starting to have a whole new outlook on the situation.

I think the respect for his privacy is closer to the truth, I've heard several Duff interviews were he seems to have a lot of regard for Izzy, the most recent being in 2015 when he talks about them working on his How to be a Man, EP. The photo of him, Izzy and Taz was taken from those sessions on his birthday.

Anyway love this image somebody's photoshopped the colours, no name so can't give credit. I think the original photo was Marc Trujillo in 2014 but I might be wrong. It was when Izzy joined them in Vagas at the time there were also some photos of the band in a limousine with Izzy, does anyone have it?

Izzy did travel to Seattle for Duff's birthday (do you all remember that story? It's posted here, somewhere) and he also tried to check up on Axl a few times but he keeps getting screwed.

so Izzy is the new Slash? that's sad, especially since they lived in the same town and have known each other since way back :(
