Then when they played it, it was a bit underwhelming because Axl was rusty. It's gotten better now but the shock value has worn off haha. Fortus plays the solo rather than Slash though. Which is interesting. Not sure how I missed all this. I thought they would have done Big Dumb Sex cos of the Spag incident bit on was it Buick Makane? Popular Post TMAC20
21 hours ago, Torb said: Just came back from Imola, tired af. As promised here's my review. I'll start sayin' that, writing this, is very difficult for me: I'll expose the whole thing from a subjective and objective point of view, analyzing both aspects. As a fan who's been to 2 shows before and knows the songs perfectly in every detail (I'm a musician too), I feel DISAPPOINTED. As a normal person who wanted to enjoy a Gn'R show, it was INSANE. Went there with very high expectations, maybe this "ruined" the show to me. The details:Axl: he surprised me A LOT. Not that much rasp, but the man has improved TONS from a techincal point of view. Never heard him with this great sustain and control on the clean voice, I couldn't believe my ears. The screams and the songs where he usually rules, sounded almost better than the actual records. He was in a GREAT mood! Waved at the crowd and smiled all the time, making also funny faces.Slash: I really don't know what's the matter with him. When he played the solos and the riffs as they're meant to be (especially the AFD stuff), it was MAJESTIC. When he improvised, sounded mediocre like a child who's at his first year at guitar school. The solos were pure noodling and messing around, just inappropriate. And I'm not only talking about the CD stuff (the Better solo actually got me), but also UYI and the covers. I'm ok with guitarists who change solos in an appropriate way, but this wasn't the case. He also made A L O T of mistakes. I know he usually does a few, but here we're talking about SEVERAL on 1 out of 3 songs. In particular, the Estranged bends, and the solos from Live and Let Die(!) and Don't Cry. He gave me the impression he was filling his role just for the paycheck, he was nowhere near what he used to be until 2011, just to name a year. Thinking as a general average Gn'R fan, instead, I guess he was still good though. A lot of people don't mind at the way solos are played or don't even hear mistakes. Again, it's not my case, and that totally ruined my expectations. Duff: exactly as you see him in the videos. Solid, walks kilometres and has a hell of stage presence. A fuckin' legend. Attitude drove me nuts. Personal note: I didn't like his bass sound in some songs, but it's just me. Rest of the band: they did their job good, indeed. Ferrer sounded different since the last time I saw him in 2012: very focused and his drumming was way more basic. Fortus was the usual MVP. I appreciated Melissa backing vocals and her synth effects here and there. Setlist: YESTERDAYS. Really didn't see that coming! I love that song! My Michelle also was a good surprise and BHS in the encore amazed me, I really gave up after not hearing it in the pre-encore. Another negative note was the overall mix but it's not the band's fault. On the first songs it was a MESS. You couldn't tell what instruments played what, and also the volumes went bananas without any sense: one time you could hear Slash guitar tearing your eardrum, another time was Duff bass giving you headache. They kinda fixed it later though. The venue didn't help for the sound: that place is to burn down for rock shows. We also were left without any water since The Darkness came on stage. Very bad organization. Concluding: *Subjective and technical point of view, based on musical taste and past gigs* - I really think they got worse since 2012. Solos that weren't played like they should be, amateurs mistakes and bad improvisation made me miss Bumble and Ashba/Finck (yeah, I said it). The arrangements some years ago were fantastic, last night I couldn't capture that magic except then on few songs. I wasn't expecting a Tokyo '92 2.0, of course, but a good accuracy of the details would have made me a proud Gn'R fan. As now, I can't say "they improved with time", as many bands do. *Average Gn'R fan point of view, who went there to have a great night seeing the 3 back together* - Absolutely nothing to say. The reviews are good, the band was energic and delivered a helluva show. Basically all of my friends enjoyed it and had fun, while 2 or 3 agreed with me on what I stated above. If the situation stays like this, this is the last time I bust my ass in the sun for hours and almost without any water for Gn'R. Didn't regret to attend, but unless they come back in somewhere with booked seats (like a stadium), I'm out. That's it. I didn't write this to be polemical. I'm not an hater, just a fan who loves to express himself on a forum. What I wrote is purely heartfelt. So don't bash at me, my intentions are good. Peace out! I appreceiate your review - I dont really believe any of it - "I am a average fan " I play Guitar as well and can play u under the table - as far as SLASH he is playing as good as anybody in the world as we speak - I have Seen Zakk Wylde- Steve Vai- Ynwgwie Malmsteen - Slash - Rusty Cooley -Buddy Guy- Kenny Wayne Sheppard - Johnny Lang - Cord Poole - Eddie Van Halen the past few years to name a few - I have seen a lot more - A s a musican its hard not to overthink things - I do all the time but your comments on Slash are laughable - his improve is the best in the world right now - I seen the gig last year and I am going again in a few months - SLASH'S Tone is incredible - his playing is top notch - his scales are exotic- his Riffs are second to none - his impromptu jams are the star of the show - the wah improv at the end of SCOM is mean as fuck - I could go and go on - he rips the shit out of every song and he is the show - I like your honesty but "this average GNR fan " just don't agree with it Edited June 12, 2017 by TMAC20
Popular Post jacdaniel
Don't agree with the comments on Slash either. He is an absolute monster. He is the main reason Guns N Roses have gone from arena's to sold out stadiums. His tone, string bends and overall feel are excellent. Its that "Feel" that I always found guys like Bucket, Bumble and Fortus lacked. Not to mention his ability to write iconic riffs and solo's. It amazes me when Guns fans prefer other Guns guitar players over Slash. Like, how can you love a song and prefer hearing someone else play it than the guy that created it. I accept people's opinions, but I personally can't wrap my head around it.

I agree, Slash is the best and he's responsible for writing these riffs and solos, but that cliché of saying that Bumble or Bucket had no "feel" is just nonesense. They are incredibly talented players and you don't get that good without tons of passion. Yeah they weren't playing material that's their own but the reality is they can play rings around Slash, as can Fortus. Slash is still the best though and I'd rather have him in the band over any other GN'R guitarist regardless of how many mistakes he makes. (Which I don't think is that many at all.)

Gianluca87
hi guys great show, thanks axl, slash, duff, Richard, dizzy, frank and melissa. just one personal negative note about my esperience in Majestic Hotel in Bologna (i was a client of this hotel): i want to thanks the hotel's staff, gn'r bodyguards, internal bodyguards, fernando and beta for fucked me up me and other guys. we were just 7guys and We have been segregated in 5m2 in aisle of the hotel with the promise that all the band would have passed in front of us. we are only 7 guys (all clients of the hotel) That we just wanted to see them pass and beta or fernando decided to pass in a secondary way preventing us to moving. axl out of the hotel signs some autographs and did some photos, so this is the proof that it is not his fault. so many thanks beta, fernando, all bodyguards

Perhaps feel is not the right word. I don't even know how to properly explain it. Slash just has "It". Myles Kennedy may even be a technically better player.

On the album those solos are done via improv and then live he has to recreate them. Once in a blue moon he does go out of scale or does a weird transition but to be fair, it's a 3 hour show and he's not a robot. slash solos are not recorded "via improv" as you say; he actually talks about this in his book - he claims to come up with the definitive parts or notes for the solo almost always the first time he actually plays it/ jams it. He's not a robot, i agree, there's always room for improvisation, but watching him play in the last tour, his playing is weird! i dont know if youre a musician, but it should be an easy thing to understand, and it goes beyond weird transitions and going out of scale, most of his chinese democracy songs solos do not fit the music at all! Not saying that there are not parts of the show where his playing is sublime, but the shows have (at least to me) been really affected by his autistic way of playing the guitar.
