Twinaleblood
I know that leak has been discussed countless times over the years, but I've just noticed something and was wondering if it was ever pointed out. I was reading again Chinese Whispers the other day, and there's this Duff interview with Howard Stern when the band is working on the scrapped 1996 album: Quote "Duff: We're in [the studio], writing new songs...Stern: And Axl's into it?Duff: Yeah, totally. And, actually, today I was going to have to fly back right after this. We were going to start recording for this Jackie Chan movie, the next one." (Duff, Howard Stern Show, 07/25/96) Now, I know that the Jackie Chan/Checkmate leak is likely to come from the Sean Beavan sessions, but it would make sense if the working title was Jackie Chan because the song was based on the idea originally developed for that soundtrack. On the other hand, I think Axl said in an interview that everything from those 1996 sessions was scrapped and the new line-up started to write from scratch. Anyway, wonder if we're ever going to hear a full version of Jackie Chan/Checkmate (how many times have we said that over the last 10 years?) Edited March 3, 2017 by Twinaleblood fixed the title
Twinaleblood
Who's InTownTerry? The guy who was supposed to have the full song and handed it back to the GNR camp in exchange for backstage passes that never showed up?

The guy who was supposed to have the full song and handed it back to the GNR camp in exchange for backstage passes that never showed up? Uptownterry is the guy who originally had the song. This fella gave a DJ named Razz TWAT, IRS, and 16 seconds of an untitled song we know today as Jackie Chan. The reason we have the old ass versions of TWAT and IRS is because of this fella. Merck screwed over Razz by reneging on their deal to give Razz backstage passes to the Hammerstein show in exchange for information to catch Terry. I believe that Razz played all three on his shitty radio show once upon a time and named it Checkmate himself. I think he called it that as a dig at Merck, like "checkmate, bitch" in my best Jessie Pinkman voice. Everyone called it Checkmate for 30 years until Axl did the chats in 2008 I think and said that the working title was Jackie Chan. Brain confirmed he played drums on it in 2006.

Also, as far as we know, the 1996 recordings are all instrumentals, no vocals. But who knows, maybe the roots of the songs are traceable to whatever idea they were working on for that Jackie Chan soundtrack in july 1996. wasted
It's interesting 95 they go to studio, then in 2008 Axl name checks title then 2018,19,20,21,22 maybe sometimes is all the time
Subtle Signs
What did he really miss out on by not being backstage? You rarely see photos of Axl with fans back there. I guess he missed a photo opp with Bumble.

I was there. If it wasn't the first night, people knew. I'm sure it leaked online that afternoon. Also who is to say this guy didn't copy the disc? Anyway, sucks for him I guess but there isn't much he could have done about it.
Twinaleblood
Wish he would have given Razz full JC/Checkmate and TWAT, and a 15 sec snippet of IRS. At least we would have come to hear the latter in full anyway, eventually. Wonder why he just chose that one as the song to share only a snippet of.
Twinaleblood
Probably spending his days in a dark corner of his room with the head in his hands chanting "Why did I trust Merck" over and over.

wasted
It must be the Slash riff that Fortus was talking about. Unless Duff went to the studio in 95 to work on a Tobias riff. Sounds like a Freese riff maybe. He had 4 A listed tracks.
jamillos
Does anyone know what this is? I'm 99.9 % convinced it's Axl, and I guess it's the only leak I didn't know about. It sounds awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz5cgt3yEzo

estrangedtwat
Forget what it was but it was debunked as clearly not Axl a while back.
jamillos
But it does sound like Axl's voice. How do you debunk that?

Stoymatic
can someone please tell me where I can find the leaked versions at? I am having some trouble finding the different leaks for different years. website wise, I cant find anywhere to listen to the leaks. I found an app with some stuff but the app doesn't give the different years, sources, or type of leak that the songs is from. I've obiously seen many lists of leaked songs and the different names of the leaks i.e. "Chinese democracy MSL", "IF the World Antiquiet", "irs 1999", etc. thanks guys I really appreciate your help and time!!!! estranged_85
lol that's not Axl in that sound clip.. Some so called "leaks" on youtube is just different gnr songs that are mixed together.. i guess many fans don't have ear for music and believe it's "new" material.
ShadowOfTheWave
I want Checkmate with Robin and/or Bucket, or not at all. I have zero interest in Slash writing new parts for already completed songs, it's a disgrace to the legacy of Chi-Dem.

jamillos
Yeah but you can hear it's not the Uncle right off. The one I've posted... that's a different story. But no one seems to know much about it. Could be from the mysterious era between the departure of the 2002 mickey and second coming of the 2006 rasp, for example. Who knows. It might not be Axl at all, but like I said, if it's not him, it's a damn good impression.
