To be honest, I think Silkworms is misunderstood

Recommended Posts

The industrial-vibe, the vicious punk-esque attitude of the lyrics and those ambient parts are cool, but as a composition Silkworms is a hot mess. It doesn't go anywhere. It's "start, stop, start, stop, start and done".

With a better structure it could be a good song, IMO.

It would have been better if they put Atlas Shrugged instead of Riad and Scraped

Its a song which was supposed to be on CD, but the album din't have space to squeeze in.

Together we walked this road

No matter where we go

Oh my Atlas Shrugged

Now don't leave me alone

Deep down in my heart

Where we had a home

In the snow flakes of Atlas Shrugged

Now don't leave me alone

Ohhhh ohhhh Atlas Shrugged

Ohhhh Ohhhh Atlas Shrugged

To me that song sums up where Axl was with CD for a long time, that he didn't really know what he wanted to do with the record. The song doesn't really go anywhere for me, just half ideas meshed together. There's a reason why it didn't make the cut when CD was finally released, I could have maybe lived with it if it had come out as part of a heavily industrial record in '00-'02 but that just sounds horribly dated to my ears.

To me it's like the type of song you do when you first enter the studio full of energy and conviction and everyone brings their shit. So Axl is rapping over Dizzy/Pitman with venom. Lyrically it kind of shows conviction and determination from Axl early on and generally on the record Axl seems ready to rumble, but it was never released to back that up.

It definitely has venom to spare in those verses, I'll give you that but it just seems unfocused or half finished to me. Maybe it could work as like a mid section of a 10 minute epic or something, or if they could write a big hook for it but the song as it is just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.

I say "fuck the naysayers" when it comes to Silkworms. That song and Oh My God got me REALLY excited for what Axl and the rest were gonna do. I was instantly hooked. As much as I kinda dig on a bluesy rock riff, I can go full head on with heavy industrial music. I've listened to way more industrial/electronic stuff than I have the standard rawk n roll. I would have killed to get a full album of Guns going just flat out, the brake lines have been cut, psychotic industrial songs.

Oh that's something different. Yeah it doesnt the GNR dynamics. Bucket added a new solo as I remember. What I was saying is it's what happen at the beginning of recording Dizzy does his song, Tommy did Riad. They played them at the early RIR. Chi dem, Silkworms, The Blues, Riad, Madagascar were like the first ep. If Chi dem was the single Silkworms was the b side. And that would have been alright in the late 90s. But so much scrutiny came on the record it maybe had to become like 12 singles.

The fact that Silkworms is less GNR sounding than what made it on CD kind suggests that more diverse stuff iis vaulted. Axl said he didn't want dirty porn associated with his record so maybe Silkworms wasn't really the kind of thing he wanted on CD. It has some of the shock value of It's so Easy. It's still really out of step with the landscape

:D I remember that porn thing. Wasn't that because Buckethead was watching endless porno while recording his guitar parts in his chicken coop?

I think so. But they didn't really use that to promo the album on release. I think if Bucket's sock puppet talked to Best Buy they could have got video money.

I definitely think Axl has a broader musical taste or what he'd like GNR to be than what is the reality.  But maybe he should trusted his instincts more. Blazing out with OMG and Silkworms might have created so excitement to drop in The Blues and Madgascar as singles.

If those are the actual lyrics, not only does it need to stay unreleased, all recordings of it need to be sealed in a lead lined concrete vault and never opened.

Pussy full of maggots sounds like Nobel prize level poetry compared to that.

I.R.S? There Was A Time?

No one knows what he actually wrote in those songs

The amazing solo in TWAT was done by bucket and robin

The vocals, synth and the acoustic guitar was done by Axl

Maybe one or two lines of the lyrics could have been written by paul

some of the fans who actually know TWAT listen to it cause of the amazing vocals by Axl and incredible guitar work by bucket and robin

I thought the small snippet with the "clean" scream demo was cool, and kinda made me revisit it again. I actually just heard the remix for the first time tonight.

This was posted in the TIL remix thread

Ideas in the music could be ok but it was unfinished and unfit to debut live. The lyrics are what make it an unlistenable piece of trash for me. Same with Shotgun Blues. "Pussy full of maggots" and "Suck my ass" make them terrible for me

didn't the full song leak, or just the snippet?
