Silent Jay
I think Billy Joel is one of the last true music geniuses america has to offer, with Bob Dylan. Edited February 24, 2018 by Silent Jay

axlslash
Billy Joel, and it didn't take me more than 5sec to decide. Both are great, but for my tastes, it ain't even close.
bucketfoot
Elton John, obviously.... Billy Joel for fucks sake! 15 minutes ago, Len Cnut said: Thats like asking to pick between ebola and arse cancer.
downzy
I've seen both... Live - Billy Joel in a heartbeat. Songwriting - Elton John. I suppose lyrics should give Joel the tie breaker, but he's written some of the worst lyrics in rock/pop history. Ultimately went with Elton John but both are musical geniuses. downzy
I get that GNR fans may not be into the schmaltzy sound of Billy Joel (though, if you're a fan of the song Street of Dreams, not sure how you don't like songs like Miami 2017 or Say Goodbye to Hollywood). There's definitely a layer of cheese with Joel that I get why people may not like. But how anyone doesn't appreciate songs like Elton John's Goodbye Yellowbrick Road, Beenie and the Jets, or Tiny Dancer is beyond me. My vote for one of the greatest songs written in pop/rock history.
Gracii Guns
I don't know much about Billy Joel, or any of his music, while I'm familiar with Elton John , which I find as stimulating as reading The Metro, John gets my vote because I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues nails long-distance relationships like no other song does.
ShadowOfTheWave
Elton is more consistently good. Remember that he has Taupin writing the lyrics to his melodies, and I find collaborations between two talents are usually superior to solo works. The majority of the greatest rock bands were mostly collaborative efforts between two of the members.

Elton's 70's catalogue is absolutely sublime.

I remember The Viz or some other tacky publication used to have a cartoon called, ''Elton's John''; it satirised his toilet habits.

Chateau d'Herouville used to be a haunted recording studio in the 70s, Van Gogh was buried there and Chopin once lived in.
