Has Axl even written lyrics since 2007?

Recommended Posts

We know Axl wrote lyrics in 2007, because Shackler was about Virginia Tech, but is there any evidence he's written anything since then? DJ mentioned Axl playing a song he was working on on the piano, but he didn't mention Axl singing, so perhaps there were no words. If Axl truly hasn't written anything in a decade, that's an incredible dry spell for an artist.

We'll probably never know for sure... Even new music could possibly have lyrics written years back.  A lot of the Illusions were written in the 80s. A lot of CD in the 90s.

A new Guns album could have songs from nearly 20 years ago or even more.

All artists, even the ones with consistent low output such as Axl at least tinker or jot down ideas from time to time. Even retired authors and lyrcisists put down ideas and write once in a while. I guarantee Axl's written something since Chinese came out.

Audience: Hi Axl, thanks for being with us today. One question I have is for the future is there any subject you haven't touched on in your lyrics and in your music  that you would like to expressed toward [????] be it emotional or justice or something of the sort?

Axl: I haven't really given that any thought. I mean, I think that it is all kind of like right in the back of your head about how you're gonna to attack the next songs and stuff so part of me feels like I'm happy I didn't write things a year ago to something because… I feel like when I go at it now will be stronger.

We recorded a lot of things before Chinese was out. We've worked more on some of those things and we've written a few new things. But basically, we have what I call kind of the second half of Chinese. That's already recorded. And then we have a remix album made of the songs from Chinese. That's been done for a while, too. But after Vegas [Guns N' Roses performed a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino that ran through early June], we're going to start looking very seriously at what we're doing in that regard.

Axl Rose, Revolver, 2014

Fortus: "DJ [Ashba, GUNS N' ROSES guitarist] and I have worked on stuff… Nobody's worked on stuff with Ron ['Bumblefoot' Thal, GUNS N' ROSES guitarist].

"There's so much stuff that's recorded, there's so much stuff that was done. I mean, there's three albums' worth of material, easy…

"I know this week he's [GUNS N' ROSES singer Axl Rose] recording a lot of stuff, vocally.

"Axl is very secretive. He wants stuff getting out. He wants to create stuff and realease it when it is ready. He is also a bit of a perfectionist. The way [Axl] generally works is that he doesn't wanna take an idea that DJ sent and… What he'll do is he'll take a little piece that I sent, he'll take a little piece that DJ sent on another track, and he's always done that. Back even with the 'Appetite [For Destruction]' stuff, he would take a little bit from this, a little bit from that, and then put it together. And when you listen to it, you can sort of hear it. When you listen to the tracks, you can hear that it's… Especially on 'Illusions' [the 'Use Your Illusion' albums], the opuses, [where] he took little bits from different people and put them together. He's got a real talent for that."

Richard Fortus, 2014

"Axl has a lot of great songs up his sleeve. He probably has three albums' worth of stuff recorded. The stuff I've heard … I've been up in his hotel room many nights and he just sits down at the piano and plays. I'm like: 'This is amazing, people have to hear this song,' and he's like: 'Ah, this is something I'm tinkering on.'"

Chinese Democracy isnt even 20 years old yet. Why rush it?

I understand that you were being jokey/ tongue-in-cheek, but your comment reminded me how the majority of the CD songs were written in like 1998.

so, in a sense, chinese democracy is 20 years old lol.

That's interesting to hear about the lyrics to Shackler's Revenge only being written in 2007, though. Never knew about that before.

i guess that means Bucket never got to hear that song with lyrics until the album was released (four years after his departure). That must've felt weird for him. No wonder he supposedly refuses to sign copies of CD lol.

Bucket's refusal to have anything to do with GNR is such a bummer.

I'm always looking for little stories as to why he hates it so much. Whatever the reason is, it must've been brutal because I've heard he (used to, at least) turn and leave if a fan mentioned Chinese Democracy to him.

The chicken coop wasn't enough to his liking.

Remember, his tummy hurt.  That can be really brutal.  Up until I was 7, my favorite food was potatoes pancakes.  I got a stomach virus and threw them up, and still cannot smell them almost 4 whole decades later without getting sick.

Pretty much mystery solved.

I read that Axl requested a Piano and soundproofing for his suite in Tel Aviv. Maybe he is writing on the tour? In addition to Fortus saying how he is excited for making a new album, this sounds promising. We'll see though!

Look, he's incredibly gun shy about releasing anything, but there's no way he's not writing and putting a few things together. Songwriters are constantly writing and putting things together. I go back to a Gary Barlow interview (I know, but the guy can write a great pop song) I read a few years back, and he basically said he writes all the time, and even though he might have 500 songs only one of them MIGHT be a hit. Anyway back to Axl, it is anyones guess whether he's written lyrics, but I doubt that in between the release of CD and everything that he hasn't at least penned a few lyrics.
