The closest analogy is Brian Jones. Brian Jones was the founder and original lead guitarist of the Rolling Stones. In June 1968, he was busted by the police and while awaiting trial began to sink deeply into alcohol and pills. He started missing sessions, and his health and abilities deteriorated. He ended up playing on 8 out of 10 songs on Beggar's Banquet, though his overall comtributions to that record weren't as important as his former ones. He played a final show with the band (who had been not touring for a year, much like GN'R) in Dec 68 and his fragile condition was noticeable, much like Adler at Farm Aid. The band kept hoping he'd recover but he sank deeper and deeper and was in and out of rehab most of early 1969. It got so toxic that he was isolated from the band socially. On the next album, Let It Bleed (recorded in Spring 1969), he only did two songs. Meanwhile, the band brought in Ry Cooder, another guitarist, and had him record, sometimes at the same sessions as Brian. Like with Steven, the band kept trying (they even did a massive photo shoot with him on May 21st 1969) until both parties realized it would be better if he left. Mick Taylor began playing with them on May 30th and Brian  was dismissed from the band on June 8th 1969. Like with Steven, it was a prolonged departure of over a year, and both bands weren't keen on dismissing both guys until the day they made the decision to, and in both cases, they had guys waiting in the wings.
