People just don't like today's music

Recommended Posts

The majority of the bands mentioned in this section are older bands. I went back to page 4 and this is the list of older bands I noticed being mentioned:

REM, Aerosmith, Metallica, U2, Sting, Slayer, Motley Crue, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Oasis, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, AC/DC, NIN, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, Megadeth, Anthrax, The Smiths, Zeppelin, Soul Asylum, Black Sabbath

Put those bands up against a few death metal groups, "the mars volta," someone called the Kaiser Chiefs and whoever else in this section that is a newer band that got a mention.

I think that people just don't like the music that's out today as much as that of yesteryear... which, in my opinion, is great because I too much rather prefer music from the 70s, 80s and 90s compared to today's original rock. I don't know, I just can't really see people like, 10 years from now posting things like "Oh man, didn't you just LOVE 'The Hives?'" or "My favorite band was clearly Franz Ferdinand."

Todays musicians have no personality.Take any member from any newer band and the have the personality of a handball. The music itself is so dull and lacks any charm. Most people put down rap (and it does suck) but it at least gives kids something "fun" to listen to.

Though it pains me to agree with you , it's true and that's why new rock is in the toilet and rap is miles above . Rappers actually have a "personality" a swagger that rockers used to have , though many of them are generic it's still there and that's what grabs people's attention . Today's rockers are sooo boring because they all have to be so serious and depressed and they have that snotty "I'm a musician" attitude , Name 1 new frontman or guitarist in the last say 5yrs that is meorable , can't do it can ya .

Yeah, seriously, great post. I want to elaborate on that.

Here's an example of how rock has lost some of the spiritual aspects it used to have: who even really knows the name of the lead singer of most new rock bands today? Without googling, name the frontman for The Killers? Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Hives, Franz Ferdinand? None of these bands have rock pin-ups in them... instead they're literally posing in fashion magazines like GQ and Details for John Varvatos clothes...

also... have you noticed that just about every review you read for these records in major publications hail them as rock n' roll "saviors?" Words like "amazing" are used... and it's just not adding up in my book. I'm not trying to sound like the typical super retro, cynist, but, I don't think it's ever been this bad... I really don't. Hell, I would even take a giant resurgence of "alternative" or grunge type music, and I hated that! We're in the pits now. Carbon-copy is back... we're back where hair metal bands in the 80s used to be with each ripping off the other... but you know what the difference was? That music was at least good/fun/listenable! Which brings me to my last point: I'm all for corporate rock- it just shouldn't be bad, bad, shit.

there are only a few bands that i can name individual members of from today, and those are people like Andre 3000 or Billie Joe Armstrong

some bands from today are still good, i kinda like Jet

Bono's acceptance speech at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony summed up todays music scene pretty good

Really Spud?? I didn't hear what he said. Did he say what Genesis quoted below? Haha if I am reading correctly, it could be translated as "Oh I think it's shit indeed" or something?

no, he said "i think todays music industry needs to take a hard look at itself, because if U2 came out today, they never would have gotten to were we are now"

somethin along those lines

lol seems a lot of the people on this fourm have a very blinkard view on the music scene today. Please stop living in the past and go out and find a new style of music to listen to! How can you say that no front men today have no personality or swagger?? have you ever seen or heard anything about tom or serg from Kasabian? If not go out and read one of there interviews!

Im gonna be honest, i used to have a view that all music today was pretty shit! bu then i saw a local indie band one night and that changed my whole view, suddenly my cd collecion was dominated by such badns as Libs, Killers, Kaiser Chief etc and to be honest i love it! Im really in to the whole intelegence of the bands today, the arrogance of the frontmen just grabs me straight away. And i know its all personal opinion, but please just go out and find a random local band or even a big name act and just go check them out, belive me it will be worth it if you like them.

Ohh yeah. Agree 100%.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs's "Sway" is a very spiffy song and video, though.

But music today - 'specially "rock" music - is pretty damn sucky. And MTV - well, like in Bowling for Soup's 1985: "way before Nirvana... [there was] music still on MTV!"

definately not to knock your style or preference but that's precisely what i think is slowly breaking down the definition of what rock is really meant to be: indie rock (as in like, indie rock is responsible for the breakdown) ... even during the way-out-there days of alternative and grunge, the rebellion was still there... the "fuck you" was still there... that shit's gone now... it ain't about having a good time anymore- it's about trying to be as intellectual and complex as you can in order to outsmart the other, all while trying to LOOK like you're having a good time emulating the stagemoves used in the 60s/70s. i don't know... i'm going off obviously, but yeah, indie rock in my opinion is not true rock... a genre that deserves recognition? sure, why not... but .. agh. i'm sorry for pissing on your music dude lol.

sorry but i'm too lazy too read this whole thread so i'm going to put a quick little rant and go to bed

i like lots of the later 80's and earlier 90's after that period screw it they all don't care about rock it self they just want to be "number 1" not caring about the quality

just the quanity and the fans

my sister was listening to good charlette and i stayed in her room to listen for awhile and they sucked they were no guitar solos and there lead singer sounded like a 70 year old woman. it was straight out awful. plus the fact that the rock scene is slowly and painfully dying campared to hip/hop & rap doesn't help either. just look and you will see. i've heard people try to campare axl rose to emienme (s/p). i was like what the fuck, axl was more contravorsial and better artist then enieme. in my option if another guns n' roses doesn't get out there rock will completely fall to ashes(kinda like blues) there will be rembrants of it but iwont be big enough to regain the strength it had during the LATE 80's early 90's. but that is just my options

Boo Emo, nobody will ever remember it in a good way.

Great post, boo emo

I'm not necessairly a fan of emo but I don't hate it. Most bands that I have worked with have been emo bands, El Paso is full of them, don't get me wrong though not all bands in El Paso are emo. Pretty much any band that has gotten signed from El Paso is emo or had emo roots, again not all bands though. You guys need to be open to all types of music though, not just rock, most genres in music kick ass, even if there are no guitar solos. And you need to have faith that something new and badass is gonna come out and revolutionize music, it might just take a while and you need to keep looking and enjoy the search.

By the way I think it's pretty weak that emo is short for emotional though and Good Charlotte suck in ways that I can't even describe but some people like them so good for them.

Jet, The White Stripes, Interpol thats about it now what we need isnt a revolution its a resurrection! we need to bring REAL rock n roll back and attitude because seriously now all you see is rich white kids whining about problems they never heard or black rappers talking about money and girls. What we need is more frickin attitude we have to piss everybody off in the style of bands like the sex pistols. My band Helter Skelter will soon be starting a movement in our little village in Wisconsin what you need to do is join us and bring back real F*ing RNR and help bring the posers down to their knees. Punk is dead RNR is dead. Its time to ressurect them.
