Good to see no votes for WYWH yet, but Animals outnumbered by The Wall?

This will not do.

I'm just curious, but why do you think Animals is better than Wish You Were Here? I'm definately not saying that you are wrong, but I'm just wondering.

I'm just curious, but why do you think Animals is better than Wish You Were Here?

Lots of reasons.

The lyrics: Waters is truly bitter here, but has not yet reached his self-obsessed phase yet. They're biting, true to life, and vicious.

The music: Mason, always an underused weak link in the band, has his moment in the sun on this album. His heartbeat like patter really picks up the pace. Gilmour, who I've always considered to be rather overrated, offers his best solos ever in these songs. The bass (also Gilmour) is incredible. Wright's keyboard embellishments are superb.

The production: I find a lot of Floyd to be far too overproduced, and refulgent with stupid, "atmospheric" sound effects and samples (sometimes they work, sometimes they don't). The Animals production job is just right.

The concept: While not a concept album (or, rock opera) in the vein of The Wall, Animals has a superb concept - indeed, it's one of the only concepts I truly give a shit about.

The songs: Sod the opening and closing Pigs On The Wing (nice as they are), it's all about the main chunk of the album, which contains the three greatest Floyd tracks ever.

WYWH's lyrics are none too impressive, the music is wanky and self indulgent, the production is annoyingly plasticcy, and the songs are questionable. SOYCD parts 1-5 is superb, the rest of the album veers from the decent (title track) to repetetive shite (Have A Cigar, Welcome To The Machine). As for SOYCD parts 6-9? It's dull, and not a patch on the first 5 parts.

Oh, and it strikes me that DSOTM is getting so many votes because it's (along with The Wall) the only Floyd people know. It's a great album, but still.

Good post. It's rare to run into someone who prefers Animals the most, so it was nice to see an explanation. I agree that most people know that DSOTM is THE album, even if it's not musically best, so most people probably vote for it without much knowledge of Pink Floyd.

alright, i'm going to vote for wywh and i'm not exactly a noob...let me just state my reasons:

1. WYWH is the most compact album and focused album that PF has ever made...the writing...while the lyrics weren't as complicated it had a cohesive motive and simplistic approach to symbolize syd's departure and...basically the entire album was made FOR syd

2. The music, notably david gilmorem, is some of the most integrated layered patterning of melodies and imagery especially on the instrumentals of shine on you crazy diamond...the strings synth arangement by rich wright is perhaps the only major synth used as a layering tool and a couple of riffs up top...but mostly that's left for the guitar to do...Roger obviously leads the band into the works with some excellent changing bass work in the shine on and into the welcome to the machines and then...into have a cigar

3. Although the writing may be the most focused of all the albums...the music is the most widely arrayed...first shine on which is an opus dream like piece then into an intersteller, spacy welcome to the machines...and then into a pure funk piece with have a cigar and a suprise guest from roy harper (a rarity in pf music) and THEN a major change in pace and in musical direction by toning it down and going with an acoustically charged wish you were here...ending finally in an outro of shine on which sure, doesn't hold a candle to the first 5 parts...but still gives ends the album in a dream-like state...exactly like it started...no filler...just compact in form...as if your opening a box of different sounds and puting it back in...

NOW, animals...i have no problem with...and it's one of my favorite PF albums as well...but it just doesn't have the wide array of integrating genres that wish you were here has...sure gilmore was a bit more flaming with the guitars and roger wrote deeper and more nihistic lyrics about people being animals...but still...i find wish you were here an easier listen.

^^ Great post as well.

For me is hard to distingiush between the class of DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall...

But im going to pick the wall, I'm not going to expand on this opinion, nor am i going to justify it, i simply dont have the dialect that some of you have... Sorry!

WYWH is the most compact album and focused album that PF has ever made...

Compact? All of the songs are long, and listening to tracks like Welcome To The Machine is an arduous task.

the music is the most widely arrayed

No. Due to the production, all the songs have a similar sound; cold, sterile, stoner (as in the people who inhale drugs, rather than the music genre) anthems. If you really want an eclectic Floyd album, listen to Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

no filler...just compact in form...

Now, this statement I find fairly ridiculous. No filler? What do you call the final 5+ minutes of Welcome To The Machine? What do you call the endless repetition in Have A Cigar? What do you call most of SOYCD 6-9?

I choose The Wall, particularly disk 1. I enjoy all sorts of Floyd and Roger Waters solo material, as well as a couple post-Waters or Gilmour solo tracks here and there (although not nearly as much... Waters was the master). When I am particularly pissed off, unsure, cynical, etc.... The Wall serves as backing for my morale. Although one of the most well-known and common tracks on "The Wall", "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)"'s lyric "All in all you're just another brick in the wall," is important to me in some of my domestic problems. I adopt the phrase to remind myself that in the long run, people I deal with cannot touch me on the inside and they are overall insignificant.

That's why I chose the Wall. It has a fairly big array of emotions I feel as well... fear, skepticism, cynicism, defeat.... it's a masterpiece.

Animals is a close second for me.

Compact in the sense that they don't lose focus...sure the songs are all extended but they don't stray from the orginal intention of the song. Again, I don't see what's wrong about Welcome to the Machines...it's a spoof of the music "machine" that sprang up about 1974 and the music is pure "space rock" with some cool sound effects layered into the sound.

Due to the production, all the songs have a similar sound; cold, sterile, stoner anthems.

How does Have A Cigar sound like Wish You Were Here? And anyways...i think that all the PF classical era has that "stoner" sound and that's what makes it appealing. This includes the Animals.

Now, this statement I find fairly ridiculous. No filler? What do you call the final 5+ minutes of Welcome To The Machine? What do you call the endless repetition in Have A Cigar? What do you call most of SOYCD 6-9?

I call it...your opinion and not mine.
