God how i hate scales, people only sometimes use them as well, all the time there are songs which use all chords and not paticulars ones in a key. apart from improvising i see them useless. <_<

Improvising is an enormous part of playing leadguitar, besides scales are everywhere whether you notice them or not. They're there.

There is no lydian scale in November Rain. The first two solos are in C Major. The main lick in the outro solo is in C Harmonic Minor (C Minor with a sharpened 7th). The responses to the lick are in C Minor. I know you probably thought it was Lydian because the first chord is F but undoubtedly C is the root chord.GnR often used I-IV-V progressions but the I chord was not the first chord. SCOM, Paradise City and Yesterdays are three other examples that spring to mind.

The first half of the Sweet Child Solo uses E Minor, E Minor Pentatonic and E Harmonic Minor Licks. The second half, the heavier part, is all E Minor Pentatonicas the outro solo.

I'm still laughing at the person who said scales are shit coz they're only useful for improvising - that's the point of scales! Sort of like saying Chords are shit coz they're only useful for writing songs. Are the same logic as saying Axl is a bad frontman because he's only good for lyrics and singing!
