I would agree that the 90's trilogy of albums; Achtung, Zooropa and Pop are great but also agree that the next album will have to be big and maybe a direction change as they have tended to do things ln batches of three.

Boy, October, War
Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum
Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop
All That You Can't Leave Behind, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, No Line On The Horizon

Seems like they are ready for a new trilogy of albums in a newer direction.

I sure hope so!!

I can't stand All That You Can't Leave Behind or No Line On The Horizon. Out of the last 3 albums, I think Bomb is the best.

This is what I was getting at, but couldn't remember all the albums.

Maybe they'll go to Bahgdad to record the next big album. I could see them doing some sort of middle eastern trilogy.

Isn't their next record just extra songs from No Line?

I heard they recorded a bunch of songs and were releasing a new album this year?

No Line didn't do that well. I don't know if this smacks of desperation or it was planned from the beginning. The way things are they might as well put more albums out.

The tracks seem to be off cuts from No Line and Atom Bomb.

I can only see it being released during the hiatus between the tour this year and the tour next year if it were to happen or it will be released as a kind of B-Sides album or something.

I remember watching an interview with Bono and the Edge on MTV2 where they both said that the work they did with Rick Rubin will eventually come to something so who knows? He might be helping them with a new album when it eventually comes out. If they do kind of do the Trilogy again though it will be for the last time I would imagine.

U2 aren't going anywhere too soon.

They signed a contract with Live-Nation for a whole bunch of years, so they can't really retire or anything just yet. And if the contract was just for touring or whatever (I read the article awhile ago so I don't full remember it), there's no way they'll be able to stay away from the studio.

They're only 50, and they all love doing what they do. So personally, I think there will be at least another three albums.

Well in the case of this trilogy. ATYCLB, HTDAAB and NLOTH it took about 9 years to release all 3 albums. So if there is another 9 years for the following trilogy then those will be the last.
The fact also remains their back catalogue contains so much diverse work and different styles that even if they didnt make anymore albums then they would be able to tour very successfully using the older material.

I saw an interview on tv where Bono said that No Line was the conclusion of the cycle they started with All That You Can't...but I think out that came this idea for this mediative album, it was mentioned in the Michael Asayers book, it's more of a Bono spiritual album.

Think you're right about that. I sort of relaxed U2 album probably won't go down too well generally with the public but I think it could be interesting.

I don't know I think Achtung was a pretty obvious play for mainstream success. Same with All That You Can't Leave Behind. After having the hits they experimented and exploited there position.

Primal Scream do the same to a smaller degree they work hard to have a hit then fuck around for two records then realize they need to get serious, stop making disco Stooges records. Even the Manics go Bon Jovi for a record then get Steve Albini in to fuck things up.

Well yeah it was a play for mainstream success but I am talking about how it was completely different to something they had ever done before and they mention in the book U2 By U2 that they were very worried it would backfire on them especially after the reaction to Rattle and Hum. Hence why Bono said "We are going away for a long time to dream it all up again." at the final concert before they started recording it.

Its a good book and you learn stuff about the band you never knew like how Adam had a bad alcohol problem in the early 90's
