I'd say 80's because when they came along they were big. Some of the 80's techno stuff and crue rip-offs just couldn't compete.
They did really hit thier stride in the 90's though.
I don't know. if you think about it the were around for about 5 years in the 80's and about 5 years in the 90's.

I would say they were an 80's band and that's what most people think of them as. When you think of 90s bands you think of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc, the alternative bands. Whereas GNR where just straight up rock n roll which died in the 90s. Their sound and image was 80s in my opinion.

Technically yes, they were an "80's" band, but they were the complete opposite of the 80s glam. (With the exception of the beginnings). I second the post that says they were just a big monster and really wasn't on par with any of those other bands...
