I was on last.fm and decided to listen to I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister, when I noticed something was a bit off with the song. I went on YouTube and the version with the video there was the same song I remembered. Then on Wikipedia I saw that Twisted Sister had rerecorded the Stay Hungry album in 2004 as Still Hungry. Reminded me of what Axl & Co did with Appetite in 2002. In my opinion the old version was better but it was interesting to listen to the new one anyway. Have any other bands re-recorded old albums?

I agree that the original I wanna rock is better but if you listen to the rest of still hungry, alot of the re-records are better and heavier...including burn in hell and captain howdy.
Cheap Trick re-recorded "in color" with steve albini in 1997, it still hasn't been officially released but it's not hard to find, it's pretty amazing actually, once again, it is heavier than the original.
KISS re-recorded some classics but with them it wasn't to make it sound like they originally wanted, it was simply for royalties.

I like the Still Hungry versions better on the whole, especially of Were Not Gonna Take It - it is heavier, louder, and more raw, the extra little solo bit is awesome as well.

Re-Appetite was never meant for release though, right? It was only meant for rehearsals, so the story goes. There's nothing wrong with that at all.

Suicidal Tendencies re-recorded their first album.. That was because the album was out of print ca. 1993 and the singer/frontman/band leader Mike Muir decided it will be more interesting to re-record the first album and offer it as a freebie with their latest redord (to that date) Lights, Camera, Revolution than just re-press the original. The re-recording was alrgiht.. Not bad but neither good. It was an interesting insight in the current band (ST had gone through line-up changes as well as the fact that the players and Mike had simply got better in ten years) and a contrast of which perspect the new album. Itself the recording was a lot tight, professional and cleaner but obviously (The Kingsmen - Louie, Louie being a great example) great music isn't just being pro and overall great, sometimes a bit of "unluck" during the recording process turns to a better sound on the record and this is what happened to Suicidals first, too. By the way, Suicidal Tendencies' first album is something I would recommend to all hardcore fans out there. It's pretty "heavy" (as in heavy metal) but not like NYHC, ruined by ridiclous crew-mentality and Metallica-like riffs. Also for thrash fans (even you moronic Metallica fans, sorry!) I'd recommend ST, you're most likely going to digg more their later, more thrash/heavy metal stuff, but hopefully you'll learn to listen to the first album and it just might open your ears to great hardcore and punk bands.

Oh man.. I didn't even get to TS.

Cradle of filth have re-recorded songs from their first album on 2 different EPs: The Forest Whispers My Name and A Dream Of Wolves In The Snow on Vempire, and Summer Dying Fast, The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, and The Black Goddess Rises on Bitter Suites To Succubi.

Motley Crue re-recorded Shout At The Devil on Generation Swine, too.

thats all i can think of now....
