Chinese Democracy was released on Black Frog/Geffen Records in November 2008 and reached 3 times Platinum in Canada, Platinum in Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, UK, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. The album is Gold in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, Holland, Sweden, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazil and Colombia. In the U.S., the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on February 3, 2009.

According to that, Chinese Democracy has sold AT LEAST 25 million copies. (Platinum=1 million and Gold=500,000)

Here's the link for the figures above, which come from a Canadian Arena's web site where one of the concerts is scheduled...

I don't think platinum = 1 million sales in every country?

It's highly unlikely that it sold 4 million copies in the USA and Canada, but only 500,000 copies in 16 other countries. Japan is included in one of the "Gold" countries, and I'm sure it went Gold there alone, with over 120 million people living there.

So some of the countries it did sell quite a bit.

Brazil I think it sold 1 million? U2 went No. 1 there with a million sales.

There must be a relaible source somewhere.

Platinum in Canada isn't 1 million. It's 80,000 (used to be 100,000). Our population is only 33 million or so :P

CD is definitely a top selling album in Japan and Taiwan with high chart positions, media coverage but I don't think they sold anywhere near a million.

Taiwan I think was about 50,000?

There is no source because you have to pay money to get accurate, up to date artist album sales. Only businesses like large radio stations, magazines like Rolling Stone and concert arenas pay for that kind of information.

Either way, countries like Brazil and Japan had to have gone Gold alone, and yet they were lumped into the list of 16 countires. (in the "accumilated sales" theory)

I know one thing, if it sold 25 million copies you wouldn't see it in the music media because the music media wants Axl to fail. It's more profitable for them to poke fun at him than report success. 25+ million would also explain why they would embark on a world tour so long after the release of a supposed "Flop." And 3+ million in Canada would explain why they're going to Canada before the US.

The platinum/gold sales are all relative to record sales in those regions. Suffice to say CD was successful in quite a lot of countries.

They really went for the cliched flop story. It was just the most controversial story to write.

It doesn't surprise me that it has sold well. I listened to the whole CD straight through again yesterday. And put aside all the drama and complaints of rotating band members and techno-blah-blah used to create it, it's a really good CD. I can't wait to hear it in concert.

It will probably go on to sell more in the long run based on word of mouth because it is a very strong cd. Outside of the GNR Wars most neutrals would say it was a great cd.

Not saying you are wrong, there's no way of knowing without the numbers. It does say GNR sold 500,000 records overall all albums in Taiwan. What is interesting is that they are rumored to have got 750,000 USD for the show.
