The album is a huge flop, it sold 5m world wide and it cost 15m or more to make.

That is terrible.

Its like saying a movie that made 80m but cost 200m to make is a success.

CD is far from a success.

No it's not. CD's don't cost $1 each.

I wonder how many records AFD/UYI would have sold without all the magazines, tabloid stories, hype, videos etc.

Although I bought Thriller but only listened to it after MJ died.

Given that New Zealand has a population of 4 million people, I highly doubt that it's sold 3 million copies there.

Your maths is way out buddy.

 Where do I even begin?

First, there was a large upfront sum paid by Best Buy to be the exclusive U.S. retailer of the album. Second, when it is all said and done, there may be more than one album to come out of the Chinese Democracy sessions. Third, in order to calculate the money made off the recording sessions so far, you have to include the money made off the upfront units sold to Best Buy to the units sold overseas.

Platinum can mean 30 000 copies in some countries (for instance in Belgium).

I know for sure it hasn't sold 500 000 copies here in France, nobodies know about the album here, and I bought CD 3 times (one for a friend, one for my mother, one for me). Most of gnr fans have apparently bought 2 copies (or a collector version -because there is a collector version in France with a bandana, t shirt and other stuff, that didn't sell well at all and that you can still find in shops- plus the normal version), I'm pretty sure it didn't sell well here.
All we need is just a little Patience...

Thanks Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff, Steven, Matt, Gilby, Dizzy, Buckethead, Robin, Ron, Tommy, Brian, Paul, Josh, Frank, Chris & anyone involved in all those awesome GNR albums & live you offered us.

Anyone who thinks CD was a success based on how much it cost and how long it took to make is a fool.

Sure BB gave them a nice cut up front but that does not mean anything.
It did not sell well at all, and you dont even hear the songs on the radio anymore, and no one is taking about it.
No one cares when it came out, there was no huge lines at best buy like people claimed there would be, not even a million people in the US bought it.
That is from one of the biggest bands of all time.

Anyone who thinks CD was a success needs to stop sipping the koolade.

5m is what gnr used to sell in just the US not world wide, and those albums didnt take 10 years to make and cost over 15m bucks.

CD was projected at selling 800k (US)in its first week and it only did just over 250k.
That is a huge flop, if you dont think so you are only fooling yourself.

If CD was such a huge success why was it forgotten about two weeks after it was released?

Five million album sales is not good?

I don't even think the new U2 album has sold that many yet and they are the biggest band on the planet.

This number seems inflated. According to Billboard Magazine, which sourced Universal Music Group in February, Chinese Democracy has sold 2.6 million copies worldwide, and a little over 537,000 copies in the United States. If it had sold an additional 3 million copies within nine months, it would have easily been recognized as one of the fastest selling albums in the post-digital period. Did no one notice?

To put it into perspective: if we believe Chinese Democracy has sold 5 million copies worldwide, without a single hit single or any substantial promotion -- that puts it just below Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad, which has sold 7 million copies worldwide. She's the biggest pop star on the planet, and her album had three #1 international hits..

Questionable, to say the least..

^^^ THIS

25 million? :rofl-lol:

I would say 3 million worldwide is close to the true figure. Not bad, all things considered.

After this tour, that number will hit 3.1 Million!

U2 sold one million in the US already, and that album didnt cost $15m to make and take ten years.
And its being reported its closer to only 3m world wide, which makes it an even bigger flop
