The concert was unbelievable! I saw them on 92 (no Izzy, but Gilby Clark), 2002 and last night. As I was telling my friend, yes it sucks that it is not the old band, but once you hear the first chords of Welcome To The Jungle you just forget about everything, Axl is an amazing front man, regardless of everything else. Here are a few impressions:
• The venue was awesome. I’ve been there for other events, never concerts, and I was gladly surprised. I’m not sure if I ever going to have the chance to see such a great band on such a small venue. At the beginning I was about 10 or 15 people behind the stage without even trying, by the end I was about 5 people from the stage
• The audience was great! I’m about to be 30 and I have to tell you, it’s getting harder to stand still for fucking 5 hours! I was a little concern that people were going to get too nuts and start to hit each other. There was nothing to worry about! Everybody was really into it, and there was no pushing or aggression at all.
• I was surprised to see a few kids (I’m talking about 10 or 12). I think is cool that their parents take them to see this awesome band, but it doesn’t seem to be too safe to have kids in the floor, if you are going to bring them, take them to where they can sit and they won’t be crushed! Hey that’s just me!
• Now to the music: Axl’s voice was incredible! So, SO much better than in 02. His energy was great and I’m so glad he left the spandex shorts back in the 90’s
• Izzy was there, he looked old I must say, but if you really think about it all those guys passed 40… and they still rock! The first song Izzy played was Think About you, he cam back for Patience and then for Nighttrain
• Sebastian Bach was on stage for My Michelle… that’s another 40+ year old that still can headbang like a pro. Great chemistry and great performance!
• Nighttrain started twice, I read that one of the guitarists fuck it up, I was almost sure it was the drums. Axl said something like “we rehearse this song twice today” or something like that, and then: “see? This is still Guns N Roses”. When it finally started Axl introduced Kid Rock. He did an ok job, I’m not a big fan, but it still was very exciting. It was funny how he followed whatever Axl did. After the chorus, Axl went backstage, and Kid Rock followed him, but went to the other side of the stage, he did this at least 3 times.
• I’m not too crazy about the guitar solos. I guess Slash spoiled us, since he was/is so fucking great (say whatever you want, but you cannot compare any of the solos played last night to any of slash’s, period). The only kind of cool was their version of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”, yeah kind of gay, but it sounded pretty cool.
• The finale was insane!!! Paradise City, as always, was over the top! There was stage diving, and tons of confetti (I still cannot believe that somebody is actually selling that confetti on ebay!!, just for the heck of it I saved some for myself). At the end, Axl threw his microphone to the crowd. The lights went off, and after 2 or 3 minutes, the whole band came out. Axl called for Lenny Kravitz, but he never showed up.
• Now a few random notes: Axl thanked a bunch of people, he had a list and he read from it at least 3 times. I remember he thanks Sebastian Bach and his family and the NYPD (there was some kind of joke here)
• Dizzy looks so damn thin!
• The opening band sucked, sorry, but they didn’t deserve the privilege of opening for GNR.
• If you are wearing a thong and feel embarrassed because other people could see it DO NOT get on top of your friend/boyfriend/husband/lover random concert guy’s shoulders, cause EVERYBODY behind you is going to see your thong! Plus you are blocking the fucking view, you cow! (sorry, I had to said it)
I think that’s it, if I remember something else I’ll post back
