Now I need to rant a little.
"Even this morning they were saying on 98 rock how GNR started strong but lost the crowd and ruined the show by playing new songs no one knew. "
This makes me wanna take the 98 Rock bumper stickers out of my rear window display in my car. Sounds to me like deejays shooting off at the mouth without really stopping to think. From my favorite station, no less.
As Baz said during his set... "Of COURSE I'm gonna play I Remember You and Youth Gone Wild. But you guys can handle some new shit, right? You're not fucking stupid!!!" And then he thanked the crowd for generally being awesome and supportive of his newer material.
Well same goes. All the old GnR songs are classic anthems. Of course the crowd is gonna go batshit crazy for that. Then, when the new stuff comes on, most of the crowd is gonna shut up and listen because, hey, it's new GnR, wouldn't you??? The front of the mosh pit with the hardcore fans WAS singing along to "The Blues" and "Better". Others were just trying to wrap their minds around the newer music. It's not easy to do that at a rock concert with earsplitting volume levels, cranked distortion and a mix designed more to shake your ass than reveal all the awesome layering and harmony lines that go into a new Guns tune.
So, yeah, it's gonna slow down a bit for the new shit. And if you're not being "fucking stupid" (Baz, so eloquent!) you don't refer to that as a momentum killer.
Sigh.
The crowd does also tend to sit for the solos. Having been raised on classical music in my early years, I have more patience for longer melodic journeys than your average hard rawk listener, and I thought the solos were, well, a bit indulgent but for the most part just fine. I liked Finck, but he coulda cut it off sooner. I loved the industrial-goth stuff that Fortus began with. "Beautiful" was cool, coulda been trimmed a bit, but had some really sublime moments, even if my buddy did bitch about it not being hardcore enough for G and F-ing R. Bumblefoot's solo...ehh, a technical wizard but if he has a melodic side, it wasn't really on display and I'm glad Axl's there to steer his talent into more aurally-friendly areas.
But this is a GnR crowd, not a Joe Satriani crowd. If there's a long bout of noodling, they're gonna sit. They'll still enjoy it, but they're gonna take a little rest.
Any lost momentum was quickly recovered, I mean they nearly blew the roof off the place with Paradise City. If you didn't feel the momentum at that point, then my guess is the city coroner was called to collect you that night.
---end rant---
