Maybe I'm just ignorant, but it seems so bizarre to me to hear something radically different to what your audience is experiencing... speaking as a hack guitarist. Maybe that's why he has shifted to less gain in his recording, though. Like he was feeling some of his newfound nuance and attention to detail lost in the mud (even though he has always been zeroed in on tasteful with his distortion levels IMO).

    I can't say I disagree.?

Didn't he say it's partly because he gets a dry signal mix in his in-ear monitors now, so he can't hear how his effects are shaping the sound? So now that he doesn't have the benefit of hearing the feedback/FX/etc, he noodles more to compensate or something?

Where did he say that, do you remember?

That seems crazy to me -- not be hearing exactly what you're playing. Is that the norm for playing on stage as a professional guitarist?

My pet theory about the noodling was after quitting all his vices his baseline trait anxiety went up. That he couldn't sort of marinate in the moment as comfortably anymore without something to take the edge off.

The thing is the whole music industry has changed since the late 70s/early 80s. Money used to be made on the albums, and bands would tour to promote a new album. But nowadays with how easily music can be obtained (Both legally and illegally), and with the rise of streaming, the money is made on touring with new music serving more as an excuse to go out on tour. So yes, while AC/DC does work on a longer cycle schedule than most bands (Mainly due to the downtime between cycles), there’s literally nobody out that dropping albums on a yearly basis.

Yeah that's very true. I wasn't really thinking about the dollars and cents... even if Angus and co don't care about the money, the label still does! But they're all on the brink of a physical breakdown. We're all worried about Axl and Slash and these guys lived just as hard and are decade plus deeper :) . I'm thinking romantically about legacy building!

@AntMutt Lange is pretty much a Persona Non Grata in the AC/DC world.  They wanted to go back to basics production-wise since FOTS. The only execptions I can think of are The Razors Edge and Black Ice.

Yeah for sure... and I don't see them ditching Brendan O'Brien.  In an interview Angus made it sound like BoB was the one thumbing through the backlog of material and picking and organizing. He'd probably have the next album(s) already sketched.

But getting too comfortable with a producer seems to be a diminishing returns endeavor in so many cases. I think Bruce Springsteen ditching Brendan O'Brien specifically lead to his two best albums in a long time. And I don't think BoB is a hack or anything, I love RoB... with respect to Springsteen, I love Devils & Dust.... and PWR UP is great. But I feel like AC/DC could go one notch higher on the quality scale, for the last album or two here. PWR UP showed there's no physical limitations or issues with capacity. Just a random thought.

  5. I think they should forgo the punishing world tour. Maybe do some one off shows... or even some live streamed / filmed ones like in a cool Shot In the Dark red-lit studio. That way they can keep Cliff in the band and they could make PWR UP like the first of a final album trio.

The timespan between Powerage and FTATR was 4 years, which is crazy to think about nowadays! That way you could get two more solid albums before Brian is Joe Biden's age :o.

Really spend the time honing the songs... PWR UP is great but if it was 4 outta 5... it feels like it coulda been 5/5 BiB / HtH with a Mutt Lange kicking some butts in the studio... forcing more consideration for some of the choruses and outros. I say that not to be critical but to be excited about pumping out a few more albums over huge touring schedules.

Absolutely. Those releases were fine for what they were in my view (I must be one of the few who actually really likes Appetite For Democracy) but they're not exactly indispensable products.

I've do idea why things are operating as they are but I think not caring anymore is a a very real possibility behind things. I think the total lack of any sort of band activity over the Covid period probably highlights it. Where other bands were going out of their way to release archive things, stream concerts, release old material, whatever, nothing was done on the GNR front...which would suggest to me that the band simply isn't that valued as something that wants to present itself in a positive light.

You have 461 posts in this thread alone!

    They owe you a got.damned.explanation.

Honestly, I wonder if Axl and Slash are still at the exact same place they were in '94. They still just don't want to do the same thing and Axl isn't inspired at all by sleazy rock riffs.

  7. Cool, I guess that Realize is the next single! Makes it more weird that Demon Fire isn't out. If I hadn't had the chance to hear it yet I'd be getting pissed at the wait, haha.

I think Realize is one of the strongest songs, for sure. Very epic. AC/DC always seems to choose ones that I wouldn't in their more recent albums (for the follow-up singles, that is... Cover You In Oil, Big Jack, Rock n' Roll Thunder... ), so I wasn't expecting that.

I was actually kinda hoping the back half of Power Up would have more "Realize-sized" songs, if that makes sense.

Mist of time,  witches spell, demon fire, realise, code red

It’s weird they haven’t released Demon Fire in full yet.  Maybe Friday when the album drops.

Realize is one of my favs but it’s such an album *opener* song to me... has that setting the stage vibe. I bet Mists would be the third single if they do another.

That interview was one of the most WTF moments - in a positive way! - of the whole decade regarding GNR. Nothing for years and then this! And so smoohtly - Baz just asked and it happened just like that.

The best part was the W.A.S.P. caviar story.

If it’s even remotely in the same ballpark as ROB, I’ll be over the moon. Rock Or Bust is the most consistent and solid AC/DC album since Flick Of The Switch IMO. Not to say there weren’t a lot of great tracks in between, but Rock Or Bust was the first time I felt an AC/DC album was all killer, no filler in a long time.

Yeah see I have outsized love for RoB (and I love FoTS)! I can run through the whole album if I'm in the mood. For AC/DC and me that's uncommon relative to their total output -- Powerage / HTH / BiB / FoTS / RoB.

Even on the intervening albums between FOTS and RoB that have lots of groups individual songs I like, the production bugs me. P.U.'s production is different from the RoB approach, but I like it more than B.I.'s and all the other 84-2000 approaches.

I don't think PU runs through as cleanly as RoB. But the 6 songs I like I really like. Be curious to see how you feel!
