Okay reunion- GNR is definitely way more popular, but more than 50-100 can name a NuGNR guitar player out of 30-40k. GNR still has a big hardcore fanbase

Actually I don’t think it does anymore. Hardcore means posting on message boards, Reddit, FB. Buying everything, deep knowledge of the whole CD era. I feel like that part of the fan base has dwindled dramatically over the last 20ys primarily due to lack of new material.

Nah, definitely late '90s at least. You can hear it in the highs, it's thin like on Live Era. Also, they were on tour in 1993.

But he goes full rasp for the entirety of the vocal track on that remix which he hasn’t done since the early 90s. Even the overdubs on the live era are pretty clean by comparison.

And yes they were on tour in 93 but The Spaghetti Incident was recorded at some point that year.

I don't "hate" it, but it was such a colossal letdown I'll never really "love" it.

I'm perfectly aware a lot of people DO love it....I'm not starting an argument or anything.

Just built it up so much in my mind all those years, and it was just........ugh.

Two questions one for you and one for everyone else-

    1. Do you like the Brain Remix any better than the CD version?

    2. Are we 100% sure that vocal take on the Remix is not from 1993? Most people assume it was from around 2010 during Axl’s vocal resurgence. But it sounds much more like Early 90s Axl to my ears.

    Careful what you wish for.

From 1993-2008 the one song in the universe I wanted to hear more than anything else was This I Love.

Axl said it was the "heaviest thing he'd ever written."

I fantasized about it.  Was it gonna be like Estranged on steroids??  I even asked Axl about the song when I met him in 2002.

All those years of longing and wondering finally came to an end in November of 2008, and I heard the song for myself for the first time.....

And I almost cried.  Not out of joy.  But because the song fucking sucked.  It was a crushing letdown.  Just the most over the top, melodramatic, Andrew Lloyd Webber bullshit.  I know some people like it, and I wanted to like it, but I just can't lie to myself.  The song SUCKS.

I wish I'd never have heard it.  It was better when it only existed in my imagination.

Man that must have sucked so bad dude. I always figured it was going to be an emotional piano ballad in the same vein as November Rain and Estranged. I did not expect it to be Axl does Broadway. That being said I don’t hate it. I think the harp is a really interesting element for a Guns song and Robin’s solo is fantastic.

It’s more about Slash then vs Slash now.

to be fair, I can understand why reworking CD era songs might be sort of uninspired work

I know it probably will not happen but I would love to see what Slash, Richard, and Duff could write for Guns. It can’t be easy trying to interpret and rework songs written by others while still staying true to the original songs but keeping your own style.

It must be painful for Axl, who has probably painstakingly perfected these songs over decades, to have Slash shit out guitar work and paste them into the mixes. Maybe Axl cares less, because he has the golden mixes with Buckethead and Robin slated for a special release, or just for his own personal enjoyment.

Do you not like any of Slash’s work? Or just the CD stuff? Because his guitar is the musical vortex of all the iconic songs. Without which there would have been no CD or Nu Guns to compare him to.

could any of you have seen this apparent list on one of those other gnr forums that have gone defunct? or were you frequenting the forums that are active now back then as well?

My go to forum back in the day was chinesedemocracy.com. It is now defunct. I’m certain that email list was around back in 2011-2012 when all those documents got leaked.

You're basically saying it's impossible for a song to go to a different section that sounds nothing like the one before. Have you heard GNRs catalogue? I can give you atleast 10 examples where songs have gone into parts that you would have never seen coming if you only heard a minute of the song.

It has happened before that songs have been abandoned and parts of it were taken and used on other songs EOY and HS. SOG sounds just like what Sebastian Bach described about The General, so if SOG was indeed abandoned it would make sense to use work done on that song on something else to not waste it.

    Breakdown comes to mind……

I can't speak for others, but the reason I'm concerned it's State of Grace is cause GNR haven't released anything that we haven't heard leaked since Sorry, TIL, and Scraped.  In 2008.

Also, Baz's descriptions are notoriously vague and shitty, but the way he described The General could also apply to SOG.

Considering how often the working titles changed, it's not unreasonable to theorize that the song that was originally known as State of Grace in 1999 could eventually evolve into what Baz heard as The General in 2006.

It will be a massive disappointment if it’s just a redone SOG. It’s been so long since we have heard anything fresh

  10. I know to some this can feel like “the end of an era” but the reality is if the General is the last release this year we have only gotten about 1/3 of CD2.

    1. ABSURD

    2. HARD SKOOL

    3. PERHAPS

    4. THE GENERAL

    5. atlas shrugged

    6. state of grace

    7. seven

    8. oklahoma

    9. cuban skies

    10. quick song

    11. soul monster

    12. zodiac

That is A LOT of meat still on the CD2 bone. And this is just the other shit we assume has vocals. There may be a few more we don’t know about.
