What makes this current lineup more of a band than other artists who use backup bands?

The main difference between a band and a solo artist would be the veto power lying with one individual. And a one man veto show is not the same as 2 or 3 in a band being the main contributors. Drummers usually don't write and Bassists are minimal. That 2/3 of the rhythm section are normally not considered to be the ones with the power.

So, in regards to the slang definition of "band" as opposed to a solo artist with revolving musicians playing to the artists wishes, this isn't a "band." Unless you want to redefine solo artist, I don't see what is so debatable.

what are Annihilator and Megadeth then?

Couldn't give two shits about Anihilator.

Megadeth without Ellefson - solo project (only one original member)

Megadeth with Ellefson - band (half of band is original members)

that kind of attitude reveals you as subjective.

why would only two founding members make a band and only one wouldn't. at which number do we draw the line? isn't this completely arbitrary.

in my opinion, the only distinction that makes at least some sense is that solo project is where the boss writes everything and others just help record or serve as a touring band.

if there are at least two people collaborating in writing, it ceases to be a solo project... everything else is just bending reality to fit into your subjective frame of mind.

and another thing. what's stopping solo artists to go under a band name rather than pseudonym or their real names

names are not important. what's important is the fact that in GNR there is collaboration between members so they are undeniably a band whether you like it or not. they are also a band that goes under the name of Guns N' Roses, whether you like it or not. this is the year 2012 whether you like it or not. earth revolves around the sun whether you like it or not

and about your megadeth comment.

you're wrogn, i believe, because what matters is the attitude not how many members are there. E.g. Axl said that if he were to go solo the music would be completely different than GNR. He kept the name and makes music that he believes is representative of what GNR stands for and that is what's important, what fans thing is not. You may never stop thinking that this band is not GNR and you have your right to do so but you have no valid argument in this type of discussion and the discussion without valid arguments on both sides is pointless

Why they are a band? They are a band because they are a group of musicians who write music together, release music together?

They aren't though! Not at this moment! Once everything in your post comes true then they'll be a band. Until then they aren't.

They were when they made CD (all members except Dj contributed) and since then Dj has recorded music for GN'R.

Are you seriously saying that any band seizes to be a band as soon as they step out of the recording studio? ;)

To be specific though, Ron, Frank and Ashba(37% of the current band) did not write a song that exists on their latest release.

Have I missed something major on my time off?

The band doesn't cease to be a band just because it has received a few members who haven't been written any songs with the band that has been released, yet. Except for Dj, all members have contributed to Chinese Democracy, and Dj has written new music intended (at least by him) to be included on a future release, and he has allegedly recorded with Dizzy.
