The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

P5, to answer your second spoiler point:

In GoldenEye it's mentioned that Bond is an orphan when he meets Trevelyan at the statue park. Trevelyan even mentions them dying in a climbing accident. I believe Skyfall is the first time we learn of the names and the house he grew up in, as well as the first time on film his Scottish heritage is recognized on film.

I believe Flemming covered Bond's back story on how he was an oprhan. Flemming apparently made Bond half Scottish because of Sean Connery.

I didn't mean literally. Casino Royale is, at least after the first hour, Fleming. All the best Bonds do stick closely to Fleming (OHMSS, first four Connerys, Living Daylights). I have to say that Skyfall does stick to Fleming in spirit. The broken down drunk Bond in Skyfall recalls You Only Live Twice (novel). I am not having a debate on Skyfall as I love Skyfall. I just still - slightly - prefer Casino Royale.

Yes, in OHMSS when Bond visits the College of Arms (book and movie). Dr No had been released by then so Fleming inserted some Scottish ancestory because of Sean. In You Only Live Twice (novel), you find out that Bond's parents died in a climing accident and their names. It is in the form of a mock Times orbituary when it is presumed that Bond is dead

Christ no, the Brosnan films, with the exception of Goldeneye, were fucking awful. I walked out of Die Another Day when he started surfing

The sad part is Die Another Day starts off extremely promising. Good opening and I like the idea of Bond getting captured and betrayed by someone within MI6 who he has no idea exists. Once Bond hits Cuba and the whole gene therapy thing arrives, the rest of the film is downhill. It's slightly saved by the good scenes in London like the sword fight, but then all downhill again. The surfing scene is absolutely horrible and the plane climax isn't much better. I do like the Moneypenny VR gag at the end, but still, what a mess of a film overall.

I don't think M's name was ever revealed.

Apparently, it's Emma. Thats what Kincaid called M a few times

Thanks for clarifying that for me guys - I've only read most of the books once and don't remember all the minor details, and I try to avoid the Brosnan films

I haven't read any of the books. You should check out the Brosnan films. Three of them were pretty good

I've seen every Brosnan film once. That was enough for me.

You and Ron are the first people I've seen talking about Brosnan films negatively. I remember when everyone loved that guy. Especially when Daniel Craig was announced but Casino Royale shut them up.

Goldeneye was such a promising start for the Brosnan era. It seems like it was written with Dalton in mind but the part went to Brosnan. Too bad they didn't continue it with the next three.

Could be my imagination but I remember reading it WAS written for Dalton or something.

It was probably tweaked by the time Brosnan arrived on the scene but yes, pre-production on GoldenEye was started with Dalton in mind since he was still under contract. He was granted a quiet release from it when production kept getting delayed. Who knows what changes the script went through in the whole process but GoldenEye does feel like a story that would have suited Dalton.

I concur Stannis. I wish Bond getting shot wasn't revealed in the trailer. Sure, you'd know he's still alive (there wouldn't be a movie otherwise of course) but it certainly would have been a lot more shocking. It did shock me in the trailer but unfortunately it was lost by the time the film came about. The teaser was brilliant. It gave absolutely nothing away and totally made it seem like

the word association scene

would mean a lot more in the film that it did.

One of the friends I went with saw neither trailer, so the surprise was fresh for him...I'm so jealous <_<

I think when Bond referred to her as M, he mistook that has Bond saying 'Em' and therefore called her Emma.

I can't think of any way the Scottish guy would know her real name.

Good point. It seems though that Kincaid and M go way back. I heard that Sean Connery was considered for the role of Kincaid. How do you guys think that woud go?

Maybe I missed something, but I got no impression that they had ever met before.
