The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Seriously though. Go see Skyfall. One of the best movies I've seen in the past decade. One of the films many subjects was resurrection, and this film certainly resurrected a once dead franchise.

A convincing villain, a solid, relevant, and believable plot. The characters were developed appropriately, and more thoroughly than any past 007 film. It was fresh, it was new, and also had the right amount of subtle hints and spritz of past Bond films to balance the tone wonderfully.

The cinematography was phenomenal, as was the score, and I was pleasantly surprised by every actors performance of their character.

I was absolutely blown away. I went to see this film because 'Oh, it's a Bond film and I grew up on the books and movies'

I came out saying 'That was a fantastic film'. I think that speaks miles for this franchise.

Ian Fleming would be proud. RIP.

For what it's worth, and for what it is, I give it a 5/5.

6 stars out of 5. Not only was that a great Bond film, but a great film in general. Among the group of friends I went with was a girl who had never seen any of the Bond films and she was blown away, talking about how great of a movie it was in general. Like LiveFromNormal said, I think that speaks very highly for the franchise. Seems especially appropriate considering it's the 50th Anniversary.

I'm still in shock. It was that good. Acting, story, cinematography, score... it was all there. The whole Bond package modernized and refreshed but still retaining the classic elements. Without giving away spoilers, I'll say that what the ending scene established was a nice way to end the film. The climax itself was impressive and very emotional. Bardem was terrific - the best Bond villain in a long time.

My only real disappointment was that we didn't see too much of Severine, but considering the movie was two and a half hours, I can see why they couldn't use her as much as maybe they wanted too. They didn't have time. Didn't affect anything really though.

I went to it tonight as well. I'm going to have to think about where this places in my favorite Bond movies ever, but I'm sure it'll be pretty high up there.

Just got back from the cinema. As a life long fan, I loved it. As a first time seeing a Bond film, my wife loved it. It was extraordinary and I do hope Daniel Craig is going to do more films. It left me wanting more. I hope they finally find their footing and make several successful films. Skyfall is by far one of the best Bonds, beating out Goldeneye and everything after it and several before it. It can be argued that Casino Royale was better but Casino Royale was novice Bond, Skyfall is THE James Bond we all love. I really hope my wife didn't notice my eyes glued to Severine's chest.

Great performances by the entire cast, some really disturbing scenes. Again the ending just leaves me wanting more. This is the first REAL James Bond film we've had in a long time.

Also.

I guess the film answered the age old question. Yes, Bond did bang Moneypenny

I don't think he did.

Don't forget, their banter at the end makes mention of never getting closer than the shave so I don't think it ended up happening. Poor Bond.

He is looking a bit rough, I agree. Although he is meant to be hungover for most of the film. Craig though brings integrity and proper acting kudos to the role of James Bond. His Bond is an, almost insane, tragic figure. Deeply flawed, deeply personal. Only Dalton had really explored this area but Craig goes one step further. I loved Skyfall. I still prefer Casino Royale - and perhaps, Goldeneye - from the last twenty years but Skyfall would make the lower reaches of my top 10, easily.

I hope we see, at least another three from Craig (age providing). The signs are that he is in for the long haul.

Oh I completely missed that. So basically she teased him and left him with blue balls. But I love the end when they go into that familiar office. I knew she was Moneypenny and that Ralph Fiennes is going to be the next M.

I think Skyfall was better than Casino Royale and Goldeneye. Skyfall to me is a veteran Bond. Casino Royale he was finding his footing. I think this is Craig's first true Bond film and the best since Licence to Kill.

Craig has noticeably aged since Casino Royale, but as long as he doesn't age too much beyond how he looks now he should be fine. I'd say just let his hair be a bit longer in the next film. Sounds kind of silly but to me it makes a difference because his face stands out more with the shorter look in Skyfall. I actually thought he looked best in the scenes where he had the beard.

I don't care how old he ends up looking at the end of his tenure as long as it's worked into the story. The problem with Roger hanging around too long is that you had a guy pushing 60 pretending to be a James Bond in his forties.

Oh I completely missed that. So basically she teased him and left him with blue balls. But I love the end when they go into that familiar office. I knew she was Moneypenny and that Ralph Fiennes is going to be the next M.

It was a "blink and miss it" kind of line but something to that extent was said. I had a huge grin on my face as they walked into the office and it was the one from the old movies. Awesome ending and I can't wait to see how they develop Bond's relationship with the new M and Moneypenny in the next film.

But Casino Royale was Fleming. It was also Bond's debut. They do not come more veteran than that. Royale is the first time we had seen Fleming since, The Living Daylights. I love Skyfall, do not get me wrong, but this is more a reflection on how much I like the two Campbell films.

One point about further films. At some stage they are going to have to return to Quantum and clear-up the dog's dinner which was, QOS. Some screenwriter/director is going to have to tackle this problem. Unless they just give it up as a bad job!

I'll try and avoid any big spoilers for most of my review. Any major spoilers will go in a spoiler tag at the bottom.

I saw it in IMAX this afternoon. Wow, I just can't believe how good it is. Easily my favorite Bond movie, and a couple other die hard fans I went with said the same thing. It's no secret that Casino Royale was previously my favorite Bond movie, but it's not even a close second to Skyfall.

One thing is clear right off the bat; Bond is no longer the "blunt object" that Dench referred to in Casino Royale. Craig has really come into his own, finally starring in a film with a wiser, more cunning Bond. Speaking of Dench, it's great to see Bond and M's relationship progress further in this movie - I've always said one of the most attractive points of the Craig movies are the relationship between Craig and Dench, and they really take that to the extreme in Skyfall. One of the early reviews I read said the film didn't have a Bond girl, rightfully so since M is really the focal point of the story. After seeing the film, that statement couldn't be more true; Judy Dench, for all intents and purposes, is the Bond girl in Skyfall.

I wish the Bond-presumed-dead part of the story hadn't been spoiled in advertising before the film's release, as that certainly would've shocked a few people if it had been kept under wraps.

The script is one of the smartest, and quite possibly the most realistic situations of any Bond film to date. The cyber terrorism approach was great, and led to a nice balance of the rich character development from Casino Royale, and the more intense action sequences of earlier films. The film as a whole is quite possibly the most tense, and the most dark Bond film to date. The build-up to the PM hearing, and the entire last third of the movie were executed so masterfully.

Javier Bardem was the absolute perfect choice for the villain. I expected great things, but he went way above and beyond my expectations. After the economical and ecological terrorists in Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace, it was really refreshing to have another straight-forward deranged lunatic for a villain.

Now for some big spoilers, don't read the rest if you haven't seen the film!

The Aston Martin's return was a huge surprise - I was grinning like a little kid the whole time Bond and M were driving to Skyfall! Also very cool to see some of the car's gadgets alluded to/used as well, really didn't expect Bond to use the machine guns. Speaking of gadgets, I like the new Q and his less "exploding pen" approach, as he put it.

Loved getting some more of Bond and M's backstories. I really had no expectations of learning Bond's parents' names, nor M's. Of course Bond's return to Skyfall was another nice touch to fill in his backstory. Unless I'm mistaken, is this not the first film to flat out state that Bond was an orphan? I know it is mentioned in the books, and inferred in Casino Royale, but I can't think of another movie where it is explicitly stated.

I'd speculated for some time before the movies release that this would be Dench's last film as M. Given that it had been made clear early on that M would be very central to the film coupled with Dench's reported difficulty with the role in recent years, it made sense. I didn't expect her to get killed off until I was in the theater, early into the film. After seeing it, I think it was the best way for Dench to take a final bow as M.

After seeing the film, I can't help but wonder if the production delays were the sole reason for the movie to come out now. After seeing it and seeing how celebratory it is of the 50th anniversary, I can't help but feel maybe a part of the delay was so that the film could be a huge 50th anniversary celebration. Surely production delays were at least part of why it came out this year, but does anyone else feel the same as me?

Arnold's standards are so high he is still a virgin. I think Naomi is the most bangable Moneypenny since the blonde from the Dalton films
