The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

Okay, in the film thread there was a discussion about Idris Elba taking over from Craig when his contract ends, it was pointed out that he would be about 46 at the time so it makes that quite unlikely so just asking. Who would you like to see take over the roll? Try and keep the ages of the actors from 30-40 if possible, interested to see who you come up with.

I think that's a funny way to look at the film. They weren't all bad though. Strutter was on Bond and Felix's side. They were kind of worried in production that it'd look that way, so that was Tom Mankiewicz's main reason for including Sheriff Pepper - a white character to make fun of along the way.

Henry Cavill (Martin Campbell's initial choice for Casino Royale before it was vetoed - he was only 22) will be a good age when Craig is done, but I'm not sure if Man of Steel/Superman will prevent him from being considered. I guess it depends on how that franchise does. Michael Fassbender would also be a good choice. He'd be about 40/41 for his first film which isn't too bad.

My assumptions are based on the usual two-year cycle of Bond films. Craig's last two would be 2014 and 2016. That's if they don't sign him for one or two more after that. Assuming they don't, the soonest we'd have a new Bond and film is 2018, but 2019 is probably more likely. Fuck, it's weird thinking that far ahead.

Interesting choice with Michael Fassbender. I will rule out Henry Cavil since I can't see him do James Bond and Superman. It is hard to see anyone but Craig in the role. I hope he does at least one more film after his contract runs out.

Jay Dubya Peppa! Yeah, he clearly softened the blow. Made the other white cops look like fools too. But it seemed every single black person was in league with Mr. Big. Except for the CIA guy who died.

I really do think Cavill would be a solid choice but you're right, it's fairly safe to rule him out. I'd like to see Craig do one more after the contract. Six films and tie Connery. If they keep pumping them out every two years Craig will be 50 for his sixth, which works out pretty nicely.

I think Tom Mankiewicz also mentioned he chose Live and Let Die because he liked the controversy in the novel. He defended his choice by saying Bond doesn't kill the villains because they're black - he kills them because they're the villains. The film definitely cashes in on the blaxploitation era though.

Roger Moore always joked that if they needed to sensor anything in Bond, it was the titles. Until Die Another Day they never actually showed Bond having sex, it was always just implied. Yet, all along there were totally nude women in the title sequences and the movies still passed with a PG.

Back then PG was the same as an R rating. Maurice Binder personally inspected the women for the title sequences. He had the best job in the world. I noticed by the 70's they were sneaking in pictures of naked women wondering if anyone notices. Also loved the part where Bond looks at a Playboy while waiting for the safe to crack open for OHMSS.

I never understood the Thunderball one where Bond takes Domino to the bottom. "I hope we didn't scare the fish" Did Domino forget to shave because having sex in the ocean sounds like a terrible idea.

If Live and Let Die cashed in on Blackspolitation than Spy Who Loved Me cashed in on disco.

He really did have a great job. I remember someone joking in the documentary about Binder on the You Only Live Twice DVD that Maurice was probably the best charmer in the world - within minutes of talking to a girl he could have her stripped naked and posing for the camera.

I imagine if you pause at the right frame in OHMSS you can probably see the page Bond is looking at because it takes Lazenby a second to fold it up when he leaves.

I never got that either. Somehow I think having an oxygen tank and trying to stay submerged would make for some very awkward sex. All the power to Bond though.

I love the Spy score. The "Bond 77" Theme is so ridiculously cheesy and dated that it's awesome. Almost as good as the cowbell in For Your Eyes Only's gun barrel.

Wasn't the first time though. From Russia With Love was a direct sequel to Dr. No. Bond is seeing Sylvia Trench, they talk of Jamaica and Bond killing Dr. No. After that they didn't really continue. OHMSS did not follow DAF, and events only been referenced but never explained. QoS probably could have been a separate film but writers strike got the team to make it a direct sequel and go from there. Skyfall has little references to QoS, and I do hate it when people bring up Vesper in his conversation to Severine.

There is that scene in OHMSS where he goes through his draw.

Yeah that was a dumb scene.

I've seen a lot of people suggest Fassbender. I think he'd be a good choice. Not like Daniel Craig good, but good.

I don't think you can really judge until we actually see the actors in the films, I remember when Craig was announced as Bond quite a few people were scratching their heads over the choice.

Fair enough.

So basically, you're saying that the first and second Bond's after Daniel won't be as good as him, but once we get to the third we'll be all set!

That makes me think - I'm only 20. I'm likely going to be around for the 100th Anniversary of the franchise. I've still got another 50 years of Bond movies to see, and then some. Weird.

If there was a black Bond I do think Idris Elba would be the best choice as of now, but he'll be too old by the time Craig is done.

Still, I don't see them going for a black Bond. Some would see it as a PC stunt, and others would backlash it simply because James Bond, the character, is white. I don't see how the franchise is somehow racist for never having a black Bond. Some might argue that Felix is now black, and Moneypenny is now black, but those are minor characters. It's much different when the central character of the entire franchise changes. Look at how much backlash there was for Craig just for being blond.

I'd be open for it, as I'm sure the producers are, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary nor do I think they'd ever exclusively look for a black actor (but they'll keep their options open I'm sure).

Not quite. ;)

Skyfall is at $918 220 000 versus Goldfinger's $932 346 267.

It will pass Goldfinger though, that is now a certainty. The box office keeps blowing away expectations. It might even pass Thunderball if it makes it to a billion before it hits China next year and the Dominican Republic.

I finished Moonraker. Going to move on to For Your Eyes Only tomorrow.

So far the Moore films are a lot better then I remembered. The Man with the Golden Gun and Moonraker seemed to have been more enjoyable than the last time I watched them. Last time I was such a film snob, and now I just enjoyed them.
