What are Chris Pitman's musical merits?

That would be Buick Makane/Big Dumb Sex. If covers aren't allowed, either Shotgun Blues or So Fine.

That song is actually one of the better covers on that album...

you have always kind of an elitist taste

I guess if "elitist taste" means I don't like to hear Slash's nauseating singing voice, I'm a pretentious cunt.

Obviously the OP hasn't bothered to check the booklet for Chinese. While it mightn't be 100% accurate, Pit[t]man was involved in many aspects of the album's creation. Not just songwriting.

From the Blowout-NYC Press Kit, here's Pitmans bio:-

Chris Pitman is a Grammy Nominated Electronic Music and DJ Producer
who has worked in numerous Los Angeles studios with bands such as Tool,
Lusk, Dr. Dre, Replicants and many others .

In 2012 his work was nominated for Best Original Soundtrack for a Feature
Film by the Brazilian Film Academy for ‘Assalto Ao Banco Central’.

His music was in the film ‘Body of Lies’ with Leonardo Di Caprio and
Russell Crowe and also features on many TV shows aired in Brazil. He also
produces and writes for many Brazilian Artists.

Chris studied Electronic Music and Piano at The Conservatory of Music
UMKC, as well as Studio/Fine art at UMKC Art Institute. He exhibits and
sells his art/paintings internationally and is represented by The Metara
Gallery in Rio de Janeiro.

Axl Rose found Chris playing electronic music in the Hollywood club scene
and asked him to join his band. He has since co-produced, co-wrote songs
for and played around the world with Guns N’ Roses in front of millions of
fans for the past 15 years.

He also creates his own signature synth sounds and patches for Arturia
XLS, Korg and Kobol.

It doesn't really answer your question "what is his role in GNR", but he must be pretty talented to be nominated for a grammy and maybe Axl sees that? :) There's also his badass WTTJ remix on vimeo  Maybe his work with blowout will help make GNR more popular in the club/dj/remix genre and bring in new fans? I really don't know tbh, just guessing
