One In A Million

Recommended Posts

Guess I needed sometime to get away
I needed some piece of mind
Some piece of mind that'll stay
So I thumbed it down to Sixth and L.A. ---
So I thumbed it down to nine o six ten L.A. ("90610")
Maybe a Greyhound could be my way

Police and hooray for tolerance!s, that's right
Get out of my way
Don't need to buy none of your
Gold chains today
I don't need no bracelets
Clamped in front of my back
Just need my ticket; 'til then
Won't you cut me some slack?

You're one in a million
Yeah, that's what you are
You're one in a million, babe
You're a shooting star
Maybe someday we'll see you
Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high, much too high,
Much too high, yes, ow!

Immigrants and hooray for tolerance!s
They make no sense to me
They come to our country
And think they'll do as they please
Like start some mini Iran,
Or spread some fuckin' disease
They talk so many goddamn ways
It's all Greek to me
Well some say I'm lazy
And others say that's just me
Some say I'm crazy
I guess I'll always be
But it's been such a long time
Since I knew right from wrong
It's all the means to an end, I
I keep it movin' along

You're one in a million
Oo, you're a shooting star
You're one in a million, babe
You know that you are
Maybe someday we'll see you, Oo
oh, Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high, Oo, much too high
Yeah,
Much too high, huh, no, no, oh
Ow!

Radicals and Racists
Don't point your finger at me
I'm a small town white boy
Just tryin' to make ends meet
Don't need your religion
Don't watch that much T.V.
Just makin' my livin', baby
Well that's enough for me

You're one in a million
Yeah that's what you are
You're one in a million, babe
You're a shooting star
Maybe someday we'll see you
Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high, ow, much too high,
Much too high, much too high
Yeah, yeee, yeah, yeee, igh!
Ow! Much too high
(Oh, much too high, ah,
much too high, ah, much too high
much too high, ow, much too high)

Deep

I like the songs or how it sounds(it's GnR) but dame it's racist lol.

I disagree that it is racist. The song portrays a character and his voice, not the writer's. It just portrays the point of view of "a small town white boy" going to the city and being forced to confront entrenched phobias from his hometown... at a particular point in time, not necessarily anymore....

I love the demo version a lot. The lyrics don't bother me, considering I'm a strait, American white male age 25-40.

It's real, a lot of people see this as a true life experience of how life is being a poor white kid living on the streets

just trying to make his way through life. That's why it's so good.

I have not heard this one before, how did DJ Ashba feel when he and Axl wrote it? (mom is African American)

I sure do like DJ guitaring play, much better than old one thanks

I was wondering the same. I also thought it's really cool how DJ's mom actually dated David Bowie for a little bit! DJ has a really interesting backstory.

It's really fascinating how this song was misinterpreted, but really, it's much easier to misinterpret this song than see what it's all about.

Hell, look at Axl's life: he adopted an immigrant family and they're his world. Axl is absolutely not racist or homosexual-hating.

But the general public doesn't seem to understand this song. I went to a GNR cover band concert in Florida a few years ago, and there were several large Klansmen up front, yelling for "One In A Million!" Idiots like that (and some posters here) seem to think this song is a rallying point for White Power, and that completely misses the actual point of the song.

(FWIW, the racists at that concert were very soon thrown out, because they got drunk and tried starting trouble with the black bouncers who were just standing at the back of the room and trying to do their jobs).

I understand that the song is about Axl's perspective and all but the word is inherently racist. Basic rule of thumb if you're white is to not use it.

That was about the time that DJ, Frank, Tommy, Fortus, Axl and Bumble all lived in a storage space, right?

Didn't cAshba grow up with Flea too?

Totally! DJ wasn't really into rock music until he heard Aerosmith, though. Then he started a band with Frank Ferrer; they soon met Tommy thru a musician-wanted ad.
Do ya wonder if in DJ's mind that's how it all went down? LOL

No no, Dj and BRAIN were friends with a band who found Tommy. Frank didn't come in until Rock In Rio after Brain was fired
