Picking the seam and to a lesser extent nails are illegal also but understand this is all a bit of a grey area, a topical debate, and subjective, and the umpires get the ball back after every few overs/wicket to inspect it.

But obviously bringing a foreign object out, sandpaper - Imran Khan once admitted to using a bottle cap!

What kind of pitches are these that you can expect to get away with using bottle caps and fuckin' sandpaper, are they fuckin' thick or something?

It is quite easy to hide, and the whole ball tampering/swing bowling thing did not come to anyone's, at least non-Pakistani, attention until the England v Pakistan series of 1992 when Wasim and Waqar had it mysteriously swinging round corners and there was a big controversy.
