Not sure I should watch The Deuce in a public airport. Some guys went just behind me as I watched the scene where Candy is doing movie porn for the first time, with a guy jizzing her face and tits.

@DieselDaisy If anyone's going to know this, it's you…

Several years ago, Radio 4 had a slot on famous speeches. They played a clip of one which I vaguely remember being spoken by an Irishman, quite possibly military related. I think it had a few Old Testament references in. Any chance you could point me in the right direction, please?

@Dazey To credit the BBC, that's the most effort they've made in the last decade to present a balanced view.

Spoiler

I actually have no opinions on the BBC's so-called bias. Lefties think that it has a right-wing bias, and cons think it's liberal to the core. So on balance, they're probably not doing a bad job.

Medieval, Brian Boru perhaps, or early-modern it might be somebody from the 17th century - the 17th century was a time of Biblical language (Dazey would have loved it)? During that period Ireland was in turmoil with the Catholic uprising of 1641 and resulting Cromwellian reprisals. Later Irish Catholics, and this also included the largely high-church Protestant (Anglican) Anglo-Irish aristocracy, sided with James II against William of Orange during the Glorious Revolution. This is where you get Orangemen and the celebration of the defeat of James at the Boyne - Ireland is still a country shaped by 17th century religio-politics! Do not ignore the Protestant Presbyterians then. Old Testament analogy is actually a lot more Presbyterian than it is Catholic. That book has the correct level of ''fire and brimstone'' which suited a strictly Calvinist predestined eschatology.

Thanks for the insight, though this recording I am looking for, I feel could have been made in the 80s. It felt very much like an inspirational speech for soldiers about to go to the Gulf (or elsewhere). It was certainly played as one a BBC producer considered "everybody knew" but I was about 22 at the time, and can only remember Irish history from the mid 90s onwards. (I actually did learn Irish History at A-Level, but it only took us as far as around 1920).
