No doubt.  Are you familiar with the band Danzig?  Lead singer Glenn Danzig was perceived as this tough guy.  One time he jumped all over the lead singer for their opening band for some minor infraction.  Anyway, Danzig took a swing at the dude and missed, the guy countered with a quick right cross and dropped Danzig.  Funny as hell, his street cred, or self perceived street cred, dropped significantly.

I seen something of Danzig getting knocked the fuck out, this fat looking biker guy, looked to be backstage, theres a famous vid of it, yeah, he got smoothed out, didn’t he?  I’m familiar of him more from The Misfits myself, who were a brilliant band, especially that first album that ended up coming out really late, that album is class, Static Age.

Yep, lol, that's the vid.  I actually like him as a singer, kind of that Morrison on steroids thing going.  But he got his ass smoked by that dude.😄

Saw that Punk documentary, the Epix one, that was pretty good, first part, concentrated on The Dolls The Stooges MC5 and The Ramones and Blondie, good little starter episode, nice to see a lot of Iggy in there.  Next episodes gonna be British punk I believe, which should be interesting.  To be honest the amount of docu's I've seen on the subject and books I've read there's really not a lot new in it for me so I kinda approached this with perhaps not as much attention as I might have 10 years ago but I was pleasantly surprised.

Im watching all together too much YT guitarist channels. To the point where you end up watching videos about how 'its hard to ship guitars internationally by mail' or the "newly wed guitar game" (Dines and Fowler respectively). Also watching lots of Beth Roars 'vocal coach reacts' videos but thats mostly because she's hot. I guess this is what one does to procrastinate rather than admit to themselves that they will never sweep pick no matter how many YT tutorials they do.

I've watched that Stevie T guy a couple of times... at first I couldn't get over the fact how annoying he is, but now I realize he's one of the best sweep pickers out there, and he's sometimes even a little bit funny.

He's Canadian too, there must be something to it because I kinda 'get' the whole Stevie T schtick, lol. He is most definitely annoying and his girl issues sure do come up a lot in his vids. But yeah, his sweep picking is impeccable!

Do you focus on any shred technique in your playing?

I couldn't get past his facial expressions at first. He did a clip where he reacts to ''women reacting to metal'', and then they reacted to him and they actually make a couple of good points regarding his humour, but sometimes he gets it right and is quite funny. He seems like a nice guy though when he's being ''real''.

I've (sorta) mastered most techniques, except sweep picking. I'm kinda bluesy oriented when it comes down to solos. A couple of years ago I tried to master sweep picking, but man... it takes so much practise to get to the level of those guys, and I really only wanted to learn it because I think it's important to be as all-round as possible as a guitarist, but I realized that all my guitar heroes don't sweep pick and probably can't do it either, so I've given up on it already. Maybe I'll get back to it one day.

Agree completely. I thought those women were really kind with their criticisms too. For international womens day he did a 'top girltarist countdown' which somehow only managed to underscore his issues, imho. I like his "fixing bad solos' vids best. Thats where I like his humour most.

Right on, man! I think I have the same philosophy, I just wanna be well rounded. That being said, Im really just getting back on the horse after at least 3 years of neglect.

I dont think Id ever perform any shred either, but I would love to be able to just go off like these guys for my own sake. Or I think of Corgan, I believe he's studied his shred and to me its like he brings a punk attitude to shred theory on SD. Jumping around modes and pulling out those angular shred licks here and there. Id be into that in a band setting. Deleo is very fleet-fingered and Id love to be able to run lines like he's does. I also wanna get some chicken pickin and Chet Atkins stuff worked up to some decent standard. Like you say, maybe get to it one day.

Edit: had you also mastered sweep picking I would be smashing a BC Rich right now

I'm in the same boat, I've never neglected the guitar much, but I've joined a band a year ago for the first time in six years and I realized that my level wasn't what it used to be, so for almost a year now I've been practising more and slowly getting back to my old level. I'm a bit of a shredder to be honest, but more in the tradition of Slash/SRV/Hendrix and all those 70's guitarists. I've started playing the guitar when I was 11 so I have a lot of influences, went through many musical phases as a player. Corgan was also a big influence, not just as a lead guitarist, but musically speaking he was on a higher level than a lot of those alternative bands from that era that I grew up with. The riff to Cherub Rock is awesome to play when you get it right, and that solo is one of the coolest of the 90's. Bury Me is also a guitar favourite, it has a lot of melodic stuff but also some cool fast riffs.

This is one of my favourite solos by Corgan.

I never heard of this but I'll get on it.  Sam to me is like the best voice I ever heard, along with Marvin Gaye.

You definately can the influence cooke had on gaye.

Both very great voices and both sadly gone way too soon.

Shredding to me is like...a really peripheral thing that a lot of guitarists focus on way too much, it almost only sounds good at like..the peak of a solo for like a 10 to 15 second window when the shit goes into hyper-drive.

Sure, it has to fit the song and the mood, shredding just for the sake of shredding is rather annoying. At the same time I feel that shredding has gotten a bad rep over the years... there's definitely an art to it. Slash is a good example, he can rip it, but a lot of his iconic solos are hardly like that.

For me it just sounds like a nice way to spend an evening-in. Just sitting and shredding.

Therein lies half the problem, dunking Digestives in a mug of tea in front of the fireplace is also a nice way to spend an evening in but you don't wanna pay 50 quid to see someone doing that on stage now do you?  Having said that it  would be an interesting piece of performance art eh, some bloke in a comfy chair in front of a fireplace having his biscuits with a mug of tea and completely ignoring the patrons, I wonder what they would make of it?  Leave?  Start pelting him?  Set fire to the stage and see if he moves?  At any rate it would be an interesting comment on society at large.

Haha! That performance sounds eerily similar to this right wing nut, Owen Benjamins, daily live streams. In a comfy chair, fire place, sipping cider, plays piano and talks crazy shit. And he's got a following.

But as for a guitarist. Based on the technical players that I know, they would stand and watch that performance art, so long as they could critique and pontificate on your playing for the entire show

Considering how many shredders are of the Nordic black metal persuasion, I think this is exactly what would transpire.

An added racial aspect would further spice things up I feel.  What if the man was black?  Or Mexican?  At any rate we'd soon see how many artists there are out there committed to the oft-espoused notion that art is a matter of life and death.

Ah, that old stereotype of the racist, Mexican, shred-guitar-performance-artist, martyr.

Would certainly test the Faustian rumours in the neo classical shred community. They try to burn him down but he just catches fire while standing there before them howling with laughter, shredding as they themselves burn.

We're wasted on this forum, we need to start a performance art troupe cum death cult   We're certainly we positioned to be highly offensive as a duo, a socialist Christian and a left leaning punk rocker with ties to Islam

Hahaha! So true. I want nothing more than this in the entire world.  Had a high school pal who used to "compliment" me by saying that I could start a cult! And honestly I was just too lazy, but if we join forces this could work!

We are what the world needs now!! Well, speaking of offensive you gave yourself a a cultural dimension to your identity while you reduced me to just a political and religious identity. Thats offensive! "socialist Christian petty criminal" thank you very much.

Thank you, I do try  I try to balance these things out by not doing myself in favours in my self assessment either
