Popular Post Blackstar
I came across this blog: https://danokildsig.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/i-used-to-rollerskate-with-axl-part-one-2/ I don't know if anyone has seen it before. It has some stories that at first I thought they were all fictional. I searched the blogger's username, and it seems that he really is, as he says in his stories, a musician from Indiana who has had various small bands there and in California. He has another blog ( http://danokildsig.blogspot.gr/) where there is a post with a short resume of his, and also a fb and a twitter account (he has posted some of his work including covers or CD songs). In his wordpress blog there are some Axl stories (he says he knew him in Indiana and met him again later in LA) interwoven with his own life stories in the form of chapters of a literary autobiography. There are also bits about Izzy (whom he also knew in Indiana), Axl's friend Dave Lank (co-writer of Don't Damn Me) and Shannon Hoon. Maybe some of them are fictional though Excerpts related to Axl: "I went the park every day after school, all day on the weekends. I met kids from other area schools, formed a punk band, the whole bit. One day I asked this red haired kid if I could borrow his wrench, so I could tighten my trucks. “Don’t lose it, my dad will kill me,” he said as he handed me the wrench. Later, he would become Axl Rose, but back then everyone called him by his last name, Bailey. (...) There was a period at the skateboard park, early on, where Axl lived with his parents. I didn’t know him well, but he seemed like me, into skating, kinda hyper, and scared of pissing off his dad. I only have the time I borrowed his wrench to go on. “Don’t lose it, my dad will kill me, ” he said, or something like that. Then, I don’t know what happened, but he got kicked out of his house and was living with his grandma, on the east side. Still a normal kid, but now cross-pollinating with the kids from that neighborhood. (...) I’m not saying Axl’s new neighborhood was Detroit or anything, but there was a different vibe to his street than that of say, Shagbark Lane, where I lived. At one end of Axl’s street was Columbian Park, where Axl and his friends lurked after dark, smoking cigarettes and ghosting around, protecting their turf. I spent a lot of time there growing up, going to the fireworks on the fourth of July, riding the bumper cars, going to the pool. (...) Across the street from Axl’s grandma lived a kid named Dave Lank. Everyone just called him Lank. (...) Lank was the true punk poet of the East Side. Always writing. Always thinking. And you never knew what he was thinking. He was the true power behind the throne, as far as I could tell; Axl’s best friend and advisor. Lank, like a few of the kids who hung around the park, cut his hair short, spiked it, and affected some punk accoutrements, but he was never punk. He never had that period where he rejected everything, like The Clash and Sex Pistols told us to. He didn’t have to go punk, he was punk. (...) Not longer after he arrived on the East Side, Axl had the kids around the park organized into a gang. We all noticed the change. Jean jackets with no sleeves, home made tattoos, chains hanging from pockets; a general attitude of surliness and readiness to throw down for any reason. (...) I never saw Lank in a fight, or any of the other kids, but I did see Axl brawling with a kid once. Me and Ben and Rich were at the Tippecanoe Mall, playing video games at Aladdin’s Castle, skateboarding down the halls and scaring old people. We came around the corner to find crowd of people gathered outside of Musicland, near the JC Penney end of the mall. “It’s Bill Bailey,” Ben exclaimed. I looked down the hall to see Axl grappling with this black kid, right in the middle of the Mall, their shoes squeaking on the floor, their elbows and knees thunking down on the linoleum. Huffy grunts accompanying the occasional swear word-but no racial epithets. Despite that infamous song he wrote later, I never heard or saw Axl say or do anything racist. The kid that he was fighting was simply the leader of another Lafayette gang, from what I remember. They rolled back and forth, as one, a writhing storm of fists, until they flipped over into the sporting goods store. Axl grabbed a baseball bat and started whacking the kid with it, getting a couple off good shots. (...) When I woke up, I saw a doctor, who told me I was bipolar, and would have to take lithium. I thought the whole things was bullshit, but I quickly learned that I was going to have take my medicine (or fake it) before anyone believed I was okay. (...) Funny story about lithium and bipolar-a few years later I read that they thought Axl might be bipolar. This was when Guns were first on the rise, and they were touring with Aerosmith. I was living in SF, and a bunch of us went down to Shoreline to see them. Somehow, I’d gotten a hold of someone, trying to get a message to Axl that I was going to be there. At the end of their set, he yelled, 'Dano Kildsig, get your ass backstage'. We compared notes on the bipolar thing, laughingly agreeing on how people treat you differently if they think you’re taking your meds. He had a huge bottle of liquid lithium, which hadn’t even been opened. I hadn’t even known they made that shit. He wasn’t taking it, either. (...) On some level, I think all of use were hoping Axl could give us a leg up, after Guns made it big. A bunch of people from back in Indiana moved to Hollywood in the early nineties, separately, and we all found ourselves playing clubs, hoping for that big break. Shannon got his, but then died.(...) I ran into Axl at the Cathouse, gave him my number, didn’t ask for his, I figured he had a lot of people up his ass about you name it. Also, I didn’t want him to say no. Don’t call us, we’ll call you. But he called me right away, came over and picked me up in his BMW convertible, and we cruised around L.A., catching up. He had a car phone, the first one I’d seen, or used anyway. (...) When I lived in Hollywood, I would occasionally slip and call Axl by his old name, Bailey. He told me more than once, “You’re the only person that can call me Bailey and not get their ass kicked.” At the time, I thought it was because were tight bros from way back-and that I was somehow cooler because of that. Now I think it’s more likely that to him it would have been like beating up a retarded person. No one ever called him Bill. (...) Sometimes, we’d go up to Axl’s condo, overlooking the sunset strip. (...) The condo was all black inside. Black walls, black floor, black furniture; mirrors on the walls reflecting the blackness back at you. Candles, stylish, faux (possibly real) leather couches you could sink into, whether high on drugs or just tired from a long day of wishing you were a rock star and could afford such desperate opulence. There was a balcony overlooking the Sunset Strip, where we ( whoever I could egg into such juvenile shenannegins) would throw pennies or gum at the hapless patrons of the parking lot twenty floors down. Axl never joined in with this bullshit. (...) It was kind of desparate up there, if you ask me. Axl was single during that time, or maybe going out with Erin Everly, I can’t remember. I know he was married to her at some point, but I don’t think I ever saw her at the condo. I remember meeting her briefly, only once. She and Axl picked me up, to go somewhere, dinner maybe. She was driving, he was in the passenger seat (...) And an Izzy story: "Across the river, Jeff Isbell, already going by the nickname Izzy, was playing the drums and riding the ramp in his yard. I don’t know where they got their wood, but his ramp was well constructed, probably using Rampage plans you could send away for. His ramp was a gathering place for kids in his neighborhood, a lot of whom rode BMX bikes. I met Izzy at the skate park. Kind of an unassuming guy, with a jean jacket and medium length kinda-feathered hair. He had a skating style more in line with surfing, where us kids coming up (I was two years younger) were more into tricks. (...) Our skatepark was first generation, to be generous. The main bowl was an immense, lumpy pit of rough concrete with a four foot concrete slab encircling it, seemingly added as an afterthought. Just to get up on that wall involved a violence and momentum that threw you off your board.. After that you had to incrementally train yourself to stay on your board long enough to make the rough transition down. Izzy was the first to do what we called a “roll out.” Basically this involved starting at the top of the snake run and proceeding at speed down the hill and into the bowl, popping out and landing at the top. Sort of a proto-ollie, though Alan Gelfand hadn’t invented those yet. Watching him do a roll out one day, and trying to use some big kid language, I said, “You sonofabitch how’d you do that?” I knew the literal connotations of the phrase son of a bitch but it just popped out of me. There are two kinds of people. Those who think you’re calling their mom a bitch, and those who just using a phrase. I didn’t figure Izzy for the former, but I’d forgotten about that East Side pride thing. Those guys didn’t take shit from people. Izzy was’t from the “mean streets” of Lafayette, he lived in a kind of suburb-y area, to my memory, but still, you can’t have people saying shit about your mom. I’m romanticizing, maybe. Izzy gave me a pass, kind of. He looked at me, said something like, “…don’t call my mom a bitch,” but with no real force or menace. A mutually acknowledged protection of honor was recognized, and then he took the palm of his hand and hit-shoved me. I didn’t even stumble backwards. A few years later he loaded up his drums and went out to California. One time he called me up at the Dog House, where my college punk rock band the Screaming Dogs lived. “You gotta come out here,” he said, going on to tell me about a gig he’d played with his band Naughty Women. Skinheads had rushed the stage, there’d been a riot-and it had been totally cool. Also, he’d been an extra on the punk rock episode of C.H.I.P.s. “I’m coming, I’m coming,” I promised, and I did make it to Hollywood eventually, but not soon enough. Later, when Guns were on TV every five seconds I wished I’d gotten there sooner. I don’t know what I would have done in the band, though, Izzy had already switched to guitar, and I can’t imagine G n’ R without Duff. And Slash is still one of the greatest guitarists ever." Frey
@Blackstar Interesting find. And these stories don't sound particularly fictional to me. I kept mentally comparing the things he said to the things we know while reading and the guy has either memorized a lot of GNR interviews and books (and based his stories on those) or he's for real. There's a lot of stuff in in there that casual fans wouldn't know about (though we do ). - Axl living with his parents at first, but later on living with his grandma? True. Axl living near Columbian park and hanging out there with his friends? True. Best friend named Dave Lank? True. - Axl being a hyper kid? True, according to his teacher(s). Axl not being noticably racist as a kid? Also likely true. I remember Axl saying he wasn't raised in a particularly racist environment. - Axl being scared of pissing off his dad? Well, yeah, he likely would have been. I can easily see Axl wanting to be polite and friendly to another kid, but at the same time being worried about getting into trouble for giving away that wrench. And "Don't lose it, my dad will kill me". Because of a wrench. Awful. I used to mess around with my dad's tools all the time as a kid and sometimes left them lying around somewhere and my dad wasn't thrilled when he couldn't find his stuff, but I never got into trouble because of it and I certainly wasn't scared of him. I just don't get why you'd put your kid under so much pressure and end up making them afraid of you? Why would you even want that? Just pisses me off. Also: - BMW convertible wit a car phone in it? True, I remember reading that. All black condo? That's true as well, also remember that. - Erin driving with Axl sitting on the passenger seat? Sounds like a very possible scenario considering the discussions we've had about Axl being a terrible driver (lol thanks Izzy ) and seemingly not liking driving much either. The Izzy stuff sounds spot on as well. All the skating, obviously, but also Izzy not letting anyone insult his mom (he seems quite fond of his mom in interviews), while at the same time also not getting aggressive or mean (similar to the Baz story that was recently posted in the Izzy thread- he remained calm there as well, even though Baz punched his brother). Also the thing about the Naugthy Women and the skinheads rushing the stage. Another thing not many people would know about (unless they've read Izzy's interviews). I say the guy's legit. He should tell some more stories about growing up with Axl and Izzy in Lafayette, these are always interesting.

Nightrain92
It makes me feel so sad, if the quotes are true, that Axl was so scared of pissing off his dad:( it must be very hard to grow up in a family like that! Possibly although the current band haven't come forth, keep in mind you never really know who's lurking around here. If an account claims to be someone however then we would need to verify it which would be very easy to do. Honestly don't think Slash himself spends a lot of time online but like I said you just can never know who may be reading Off the top of my head in the past we had Axl of course, Ashba and Bumble register and be authenticated.
