Btw. Have you noticed that he wears a different pair of jeans when performing with Billy Joel?

Good morning! yes! he have three pairs of jeans: 1 for GNR concerts, 1 for travel (the light blue), 1 for Billy Joel concert....ahh and one pair of shorts:P

He receives rave reviews for his performance!

A rather interesting article, it was wrote by a lady who knew Slash and Axl in Tower Video...apparently Axl was the store's boss

This month marked the 30th anniversary of the release of Guns N’ Roses’ classic Appetite for Destruction. Thirty years – Christ. When I think of how many lifetimes I’ve lived in those past three decades, it makes me dizzy. And yet, it seems in a very real sense that no time has passed at all. Some say there’s no such thing as past, present and future…that it’s all happening at the same time. It feels that way, in the quiet moments – to me at least.

I was just a 21 year old kid, fresh out of art school when I first heard about G N’R. I had moved to Los Angeles after I graduated and was living with my cousin in a pad the size of a postage stamp. It was a struggle, for a while, finding ways to pay the rent. I worked retail at the infamous Wacko on Melrose, then I ran deliveries for a store that sold party favors out in the valley and then finally I hit pay dirt when I landed a gig at Tower Sunset – the flagship store in West Hollywood. I just walked straight in and asked if they had any openings in the art department. I was broke but confident and too young to really care one way or the other. They hired me on the spot – as a clerk. I started the next day. That’s when I met him, Saul Hudson – better known to his fans as Slash.

I arrived bright and early, and the manager, Kevin, introduced me around to the gang. Everyone was super friendly, if a bit arrogant in that typical way music snobs usually are. After the meet and greet was done, he led me down a hall to the boss man’s office. “I’ll just introduce you to Billy,  he owns the place…then you can get started,” he said, turning the knob with a touch of apprehension.

I took a few tentative steps inside to see a young dude with an epic mop of long curly hair spilling into his face. He was sitting behind an enormous desk, ancient and ornately carved, that practically came up to his chest. It was so huge, I wondered how they were able to get it through the door.

Jesus, Saul, what the hell? You know you can’t hang out in here!”

Kevin was pissed, I was confused and ‘Saul’ didn’t even acknowledge our presence.

“Saul?” Kevin repeated with impatience.

Was he asleep? Passed out? I could hear some vague rustling from under the desk.

“Get the fuck up, dude” Kevin said, his voice pitching higher.

“Come on man, give me a minute.”

It speaks, I thought to myself with a slight chuckle. I was finding the whole scene pretty amusing.

“I’ve told you a million times you can’t keep doing this, you’re gonna get your fucking ass fired.”

I heard some more rustling followed by a squeak. Did Tower have a mice?

“Just another second,” Saul said, a touch breathless.

“Now! I’m not screwing around.”

With a slight shrug of his shoulders, he pushed himself back from the desk. I could finally see his torso, he looked tall. A second later, a pretty young thing popped up from between his legs. She was dressed in a black leather mini skirt and a bikini top. Christ, this mofo was getting a goddamned blow job.

Without a hint of embarrassment, she got to her feet, lipstick smeared across her crooked smile. Giving Saul a quick peck on the top of his head, she turned around and walked out of the office with a proud look on her face.

I was gobsmacked, Kevin was pissed, and Saul looked wiped out.

“Get the fuck out of the chair, dude,” Kevin barked, snapping his fingers.

Saul groaned, his belt buckle clanged against the desk as he struggled upright.

“Take it easy, Kev. I’m outta here soon anyway. We’re signing with Geffen, Bill’s quitting too.”

Bill, I’d find out later, was none other than Axl Rose.

Zipping up, he walked around the desk and extended his hand in my direction.

“And you are?” he asked, eyes hidden by his glorious curls.

“CrystaI,” I croaked.

“Come see us tonight at The Rainbow,” he said.

Digging into his right front pocket, he pulled out a couple of crumpled tickets and handed them to me – they were damp with his sweat.

“It’s free, bring some friends,” he said.

I thanked him and stuck them in my bra. It was an interesting start to my first day on the job, to be sure.

I did wind up going — there was no way I was going to miss it. They put on one hell of a show…and it was loud as fuck. Even back then, they knew how to command an audience. They had them eating out of the palm of their hands. And there was Saul, cute as a bug’s ear under his top hat. He still had that mop in his face with a giant, toothy grin peeking out from under it all. He was loving life.

So was I.

I worked with Saul and Bill for a month or so before they did ultimately quit. A year later everyone would know who they were when Appetite dropped on the world like an atom bomb. And you know, the rest as they say…is history. I still think about how we met every now and then, me and Saul. Not often, just in my quieter moments — when past and present converge. Sometimes, I even wonder what happened to that girl underneath the desk…and her crooked smile.

Did people really call Slash Saul when he worked at Tower Sunset?

Also Axl was fired, he didn't quit, Saul got him the sack!!

Yeah, and I don't think anyone called Axl "Billy" around that time either (in 1986 when they got signed). It reads a bit too much like a Mary Sue fanfic. I don't believe a word of it.

Saul? Billy?

Sounds fake as hell.

I'm pretty sure they didn't go by these names anymore at that point in time.

Still didn't sound that unbelievable, right? :P

I don't know, Marc Canter says Slash and Axl actually were pretty good employees and took their job seriously. So I'm not sure Slash really would have pulled a stunt like that.

It's good to see him talking and telling stories again.

He should do that more often.

What did he say before the video starts though?

Seems like he was in the middle of telling that story here.

I cant recall but that was really most of the story...

Didn't Slash say he used to used to play porno flicks on the TV screens in the shop and have all of his street rat friends hanging out there? That's how he got Axl fired because they singled him out as the ring leader and made an example of him.

There is only a sentence or two missing from the beginning, when he mentioned meeting the girl in STL and either taking her to LA or taking her to get laid, lol, still not sure which.

I remember either Slash or Axl saying that they'd drink beer after work and put pornos on, but I don't remember ever hearing anything about Slash getting Axl fired. Where did you get that from?

I thought I read it in Slash's book, I just have it stuck in my head that he said all of these things happened and then the bosses got sick of all the bad behaviour and as with what always happens to Axl,  they singled him out as the ringleader and sacked him.

I could've sworn that's what he said in his book

Agree...I watched the show live and Axl's tone of voice when he said that was definitely lighthearted. He was in that kind of mood ALL night....it was fuckin awesome to see and hear, even through Periscope! :)

But speaking of Duff and Axl. ,miss Bethany took some great pics of them.

Thank you for posting these (just going back over pages I didn't have time to read properly and liking things now that I've got my quota back). These are lovely!  Duff!   Um...being new here and all, I've noticed there's an Izzy thread.  And there this thread, which is kinda like an unofficial Slaxl thread.  Doesn't seem to be a dedicated Duff thread?  Or am I missing something?

I agree with all of you about the Tower Video story. It looks fake...

The excerpt from Slash's book:

  Reveal hidden contents

Tower Video was located directly across the street from the Tower Records where I’d been busted shoplifting a few years earlier. Axl was living with one of the managers, and once I’d joined the ranks it didn’t take me long to figure out that I was now one of a truly loony cast of colorful characters; I imagine that we were the most ludicrous and utterly negligent staff that any Tower location has ever employed. There were also some great, senile alcoholics who worked at the Tower Classical next door.

Every night at about eight o’clock, after the general manager for records and video left for the night, those of us in video would stock up at the liquor store across the street, throw porno movies on the store’s video system, and just drink. We’d put our friends’ bands on the stereo and generally ignore every customer that wandered in.

It wasn’t anything that the security cameras picked up because we didn’t have vodka bottles next to the cash register, so it went on unnoticed for a long time—I imagine, though, that if those tapes were viewed, we’d come off as lazy and unhelpful. We’d mix our cocktails back in the office and walk around with them in plastic Solo cups; we’d be ringing up any purchases with one hand around a screwdriver. I’m sure the customers knew what we were up to the moment we breathed on them, but nobody ever complained because they were shocked speechless. All things considered, we were way too scary for most people; they just got out of there as quickly as they could.

Unfortunately, one of the tighter-assed managers caught on to us and when he did, Axl took the fall: he was fired for the antics that we were all guilty of. Even then, I knew why: Axl has the kind of presence and star power that threatens authority figures; they see someone like Axl as nothing but a “ringleader.”

Slash doesn't say anything about Axl being the manager (maybe he didn't remember that). Probably that was why Axl was singled out and fired.

@MillionsOfSpiders I remember that story now, but I was confused because you said Slash got Axl fired and I thought that would have been a really shitty thing to do and I couldn't really imagine Slash doing that to Axl.

Reading the excerpt @Blackstar posted, it just seems to me like the higher-ups at Tower singled Axl out (probably because he was some kind of store manager as he himself claims) and fired him, but that wasn't really Slash's fault.

At the beginning of the excerpt Slash also says Axl was living with one of the managers (maybe a higher up manager?) at the time. Did they have a female manager or was Axl really living with some dude in a suit? I only noticed because it would fit into the picture of the whole prostitution discussion we had recently.

This thread is for everyone. It was the first thread down here in the Jungle of those threads that stick around. Izzy only has his own thread because @SerenityScorp created one at some point with the intention of learning more about Izzy. Somehow that thread stuck around too. But Izzy and Duff are perfectly acceptable to discuss in this thread as well and they do get discussed quite frequently (especially Duff and his family).

Axl's story from the other night....thanks to Bethany.

He so reminds me of his former self of the 90-92 era here. The gestures, the facial expressions.... Love to see it.

But what was he saying, I have difficulties to understand also due to the bad audio. He was talking to a woman on the phone and she said she had a boyfriend? What else was he saying and what is the "joke" of the story.

Love the way he says "click" and hangs up the phone pantomimicly, putting down a reciever like in the good old days.

It's just the impression I got from reading his book and some shite GnR books over the years that things got dialed up to 11 once Slash started working there, hence the extra attention from the overall manager. I didnt mean he went out of his way to get him fired.

I read in Danny Sugermans book that Axl was the night manager there, but he would climb up onto the roof out of the way and go to sleep. Dunno if that's true, that guy really hates Axl

Yeah, it crossed my mind as well when I posted it. But maybe it was a low rank manager like Axl was, someone who was in charge of a certain department or a certain shift. And although I don't know anything about Tower Records and I've never visited one, judging from similar places I don't think the managers (at least the low rank ones) were the suit types.

I haven't read Danny Sugerman's book, but wasn't he the one who paralleled Axl with Jim Morrison? I've read an article he did for Spin, and it didn't look like he hated Axl; my impresson was that it was more the opposite.

I remember reading something like that too. I don't remember much about the Sugerman book except it was really boring and i never re-read it. I think that sleeping up on the roof story is from another author.
