Such an interesting discussion on Axl and how gender is perceived etc. Thanks everyone especially those who wrote long, well-considered contributions. And like someone else said, a well-behaved discussion. Go the new, mature Women's thread All I have to add is: for me personally, the first time I ever saw GNR was the SCOM video in 87/88. I remember that moment. I was instantly entranced by Axl. His moves and his look. It sounds drama queen-ish but it was love at first sight. I couldn't have explained back then why I reacted that way. Now I realise it was because of his ambiguous sexuality (at least in terms of his look). Why do/did young girls adore girly-looking rock/pop stars? I believe that sexuality is a spectrum, not either/or. And especially when you're young and your own sexual identity is not fully formed, you can be attracted to people who are like you in some way. That's my theory. Axl's insane sexiness as a young man was largely due to the fact that he managed (consciously or unconsciously) to 'package' a broad spectrum of sexiness into one person. He presented possibility and playfulness. I think that the image of feminine Axl has to do mostly with two things: 1) His undeniable beauty and great looks and the way he dressed. My dad watching Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert sees George Michael (who does have more feminine traits than Axl) and says 'He sang very good, great performance!' and then sees Axl and the only thing he says is 'Why the hell is he wearing a skirt?'. That Axl performance is completely astonish, but the first thing a non-fan sees is indeed what he is dressing, because it's not normal for a man, with that deep voice wear something so feminine. 2) His diva-like behavior, the old story of he's acting hysterical and over sensitive like a girl. And that's why I think the word 'fag' is used so much when someone wants to insult him. The AC/DC fans thing I think everyone could see it. The badmouthing I read on facebook groups for selling/buying tickets and on the concert itself hadn't anything to do with if he could sing or not, it was all in the lines of him being 'a diva', 'a fag', 'a pussy'. I want to leave you with two examples of the two points I talked about. 1)The beauty and great looks - Some of you may remember this Vogue article talking about his hair by the time of the Coachella shows. I mean, the guy was back with is old band after 23 years, he would headline the most famous music festival in the world and the article title is: 'The Best Axl Rose Hair Moments of All Time' . I know that they are a fashion magazine, the most important one actually, but they could make a coverage about his attire back in the day, especially when these kind of clothes - the so called 'grunge style' - is so hyped these days again- But they chose to talk about 'hair moments', something that is associated with girls, it's odd. 2) The diva-like, he's a fag, yada-yada. So this is the cover of the biggest portuguese music newspapper (now magazine) right after the GN'R show in Portugal in '92, when Axl - surprise - got mad about people throwing things on stage and lighting single flares and left the stage. The word below his pic with the bow translates to something like 'Sissy!'. You know, they could have call him 'asshole' but they chose 'sissy' Anyway great discussion and very good points you all made. Maybe he's referring to Axl filling in for AC/DC, not sure because he wouldn't elaborate. Maybe he feels GnR should come first (in terms of new album or something). Axl recently said that he feels a need to help this man out (Angus Young). He said he feels a strong connection that he's never felt before and Duff said in an earlier interview that in his opinion he thinks Angus should retire so they obviously don't see eye to eye on that situation.
