bran
Axl got lazy and took the easy money with a half assed reunion playing the same shit they have played for a decade now.

DieselDaisy
One other factor is that they all started doing solo albums. Bands are always going tits up when the solo albums make an appearance. Consider this. Duff was doing his solo album during the Illusion tour. Gilby was doing his early also (I know Rose didn't like him for some odd reason but this is ex post facto). Then the Pit stuff. You might also mention Slash's 10 billion guest appearances. Nobody was keeping their ideas back for Guns, well Slash was but it got rejected.

Silverburst80
You put a group of people with substance abuse problems and mental instability together it's never gonna end well. I'm pretty surprised the original run lasted as long as it did.

Ive loved this band since 89 and I'm amazed they made it through the early 90s alive, let alone they are all still alive and 3 are capable of touring. Guitar player has a defibrillator inserted in his heart at 35. Drummer has a stroke at 31 Bass player almost dies from burst pancreas at 30. Rhythm guitar player, an ex heroin dealer, alcoholic, junkie who quits the band to keep clean. A singer who has a head full of demons resembling a bag of spiders. Sone fans who liked the band are dead due to the above, the fact the band are alive is quite an achievement. 4
Gnrcane
Their debut album was too successful giving them the means (both financial and power) to slowly destroy themselves.

Guns n Roses took the world by storm in 1987 playing rock n roll like just as well as any of the greats that came before them but faded away pretty fast just a few years later when key members Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler left the band for different reasons. One more sentence? The three other members Axl Rose, Slash and Duff Mckagan carried on under the GNR name, did one long lucrative world tour in the early nineties backed by replacement musicians and they are doing the very same thing right now in 2017 -- but to this day, over 26 years later, the three of them were not able to write, record and release one single song together as "Guns n Roses". The Stones began to put out terrible albums and there was a big Mick n' Keith feud when Jagger decided to do 1980s solo pap, featuring jogging in a tracksuit on music videos. Solo albums always signify the demise of a band. PS You just knew in your heart that you could say goodbye to a decent stones release for a decade, perhaps ever, when witnessing this abomination, Edited September 18, 2017 by DieselDaisy

The band was already in this Situation before the solo albums and various side proejct happened. Slash or Duff also never released avantagarde albums like John and Yoko did. SoulMonster
Summarizing the history of GN'R by pointing to Axl's laziness is accepting that GN'R = Axl. Axl's laziness would only be a problem if no one else has the courage and strength to step up and make things happen.
