Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread (***SPOILER THREAD***)

Recommended Posts

With the new Star Wars movie almost upon us, we thought we'd create two separate threads where members who have seen the movie or want to discuss spoilers without ruining the experience for those haven't had a chance to see the film.

Please use this thread to discuss Episode VIII.  No need to use the spoiler tag.

Anyone posting spoilers in the spoiler free thread gets a week suspension (just like last time).

I can't believe its almost here!

I rewatched The Force Awakens last week and still think its an awesome Star Wars movie. I really like these characters and I can't wait to see VIII. Hope Luke really shines. I also spoiled TFA months in advance. Excited that I am in the dark for this one, I should probably leave the thread!

Yeah I also spoiled TFA for myself months before it came out and it weakened the experience for me. Not gonna make the same mistake this time. The Japan premiere is going on right now so I'm assuming the floodgates will open soon. I'll come back to this thread after I see the movie in one week!

EDIT: oh wait Nevermind the thing in Japan today was just a press event, not the premiere. My bad.

I've never seen whatever film that gif is from so idk what you're trying to imply there lol

Anger. Honestly from everything I've read....

Spoiler

It's looking more and more like Rey is indeed a random. RIP Rey Skywalker. :(

Pretty good. Preferred it to TFA, which I wasn’t that big a fan of. Rian Johnson has a much better eye than Abrams, knows how to compose a frame.

ESB

ANH

TLJ

ROTJ

not fussed about the rest

was the absolute worst part of the movie, wasn't it?

That, and a few too many quips which undercut dramatic moments, especially for Luke.

Seen it early today. 6:30 AM showing at my local. I braved the sub zero temperature and ice for a special early showing in an empty cinema.

Spoiler

Thought it was pretty good, but there were a few too many fake outs (characters quite clearly dying, but not actually) in places. The twists were cool, but when you do a twist reversing a twist it's silly. I thought it was cool that they didn't actually kill of Luke since he wasn't actually there, but then they go and kill him off anyway.

Loved the Rey/Luke stuff until the final part of the story (Luke vs. First Order). The Leia stuff was cool, however I'm very surprised they didn't just kill her off. I mean they can't use cgi for her in episode IX surely.

However the Finn section of the story was really a shaggy dog tale right? It didn't further the plot and casino subplot was the weakest section of the story.

All of those complaints said, I did feel like in certain sections this could have been the best film since Empire Strikes Back. They just got carried away with the silliness though.

Spoiler

They made the right decision killing of Smoke as a twist and I loved Ren/Kylo vs. his guards, but I'm not sure Kylo is strong enough to hold part 3 by himself as the central antagonist.

Also liked Yoda showing up. Clearly they're making sure you know Luke's still going to be in episode IX as a force ghost.

Just saw the thing, a great movie. But not a great Star Wars movie. I feel they disrespected every one of my heroes.

That Leia scene was so bad, seems to me like Rian doesnt understand well the force and its uses, I mean, those force dices, cmon, but, overall, way better than Episode VII.

I love how utterly satisfying the film is while being totally subversive.

Rian got away with making Luke a bastard throughout the whole film before he redeemed him and then offered up his ghost to the audience.

I don't think another director would have had the balls to kill Luke Skywalker.

There were too many climaxes, though. It was exhausting seeing so much happen and so many doors closing. Especially since we have one more film to go and I feel like what Rian did was narratively shoot most of the load.

We as an audience were too used to the central tropes of Star Wars; family and destiny.

I have a feeling that initially, they were setting things up like Snoke being Sidious, Rey being a Skywalker -things that turned out to be red herrings. They were fun to speculate and they brought comfort to us because they conformed to the notion that we subscribed to Star Wars; that everything is relevant and everything has significance to the overall story.

I just think Rian Johnson was able to drop those things when he wrote his script. He didn't want to do what everyone expected and very much wanted him to do; tie it all together. He wanted to suggest that this universe is bigger than our narrow focus of it.

It is very bittersweet, because its stomped on a lot of chances for things to be, just so they can be as they are...

It doesn't take balls to kill Luke Skywalker.  In fact I'd say the opposite...bc it was going to happen in this movie or the next.

i saw this last night I'm still trying to unpack and process it all.  But one thing is for sure the Leia scene is assanine.  I have no problem with force flying, but that much exposure to space without protection would kill anyone.  You can't get around that.  You just can't suspend disbelief of that whole scene, so why try?

Two other issues Snoke was a big deal and his death was a joke.  And, who the fuck is Snoke anyway?  I'm all for some questions not being answered.  But Snoke not being explained is not one of them....

Finally, Im still holding out hope Rey's lineage is explained, but she is too powerful to just be a some random chic on a desolate planet whose parents dumped her.

Honestly she should be a Skywalker.  Star Wars is the story of Skywalkers, this trilogy, that's what it is all about.  There's a couple of reasons for her existence that I could give a pass too (such as she is Obi Wans daughter, or even another force baby - maybe even a force baby created by Vader or some kinda cool twist), but if she's just a rando...Fuck off
