Papa Roach Hated Opening for GNR (2006)

I've still not seen an adequate excuse for the lateness thing - plenty of weak attempts mind (''you wouldn't want Axl when he is not 100%'').

"Champagne, vodka, tequila, red wine, and beer. A bed? That's pretty amazing. So he sleeps at the gig?" - James Hetfield reading Axl's 2010 rider

Then there are the rumors. On the illusion tour apparently he'd stay in to watch a movie, see the fireworks - or iirc gamble in casinos. He's even worse in 2001-2002.

The official reason for Friday's (Dec. 6) cancellation of GUNS N' ROSES' concert at First Union Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is that a member of the band — that is, the notoriously erratic frontman Axl Rose — was having "health problems," the Philadelphia Inquirerhas reported.

The group, with the exception of Rose, was still lodged at the Ritz Carlton in Center City (Philadelphia) yesterday afternoon. As of last night, Rose had still not checked in. A source at the First Union Center told the Inquirerspeculation was that Rose had stayed in his New York hotel room to watch a basketball game.

A GUNS N' ROSES spokeswoman declined comment yesterday, but said that she expected the band to make a statement tomorrow (Dec. 9).

Meanwhile, the following item appeared in today's edition of the New York Post:

"Axl Rose never got to the birthday party photographer David LaChappelle threw for his transsexual muse, Amanda Lapore, at Spa Thursday night (Dec. 5). The GUNS N' ROSES frontman arrived at about 3 a.m., but he was wearing a fur coat, and the club has a policy against fur. One of the women in Axl's entourage checked her fur at a nearby parking garage, but angry Axl stalked off as his friends went in to find Robert Downey Jr., who confessed he was a big fan of LaChappelle's photos of Lapore's fake breasts. Downe asked if he could kiss them. Sure, she said. So he did."

I have always been partial to the Papa Roach song "Blood Brothers" since I heard it years ago in a Tony Hawk video game.

The music. Not the lyrics/vocals. It's a song with great riffage.

For what it's worth, I'm sure Papa Roach would love to tour with GN'R now. Not only has Axl done some sort of 180 to his preparation procedure, the shows begin and end like clockwork. There's no more danger that basketball or netflix will postpone a performance.

Somewhere in Whispers isnt there a blurb on Papa Roach inviting Axl to guest on their record? I looked but cant find it - Im thinking I actually read it in one of the links and not the piece itself?

I swear I remember this though,  I think it was the guitarist and it said Axl politely directed him to contact his manager.

Korn release party, January 2006.

"Casually brushing off a request of Papa Roach drummer Dave Bruckner to guest on the nu-metallers next album, Rose revealed more information on his own, more pressing, project: "We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done," he says. Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album. Among Rose's favorites are "Better," "There Was a Time" and "The Blues.""

Thanks for finding this.  So I guess this was earlier in 2006 before the tour.  Axl even mentions talking to Izzy at the end, so tour must've been in the works.  Axl did seem to genuinely enjoy them, so I wonder if the opening slot was a consolation for not recording with them?

I'm friends with some of the Steel Panther guys, and they told me that Axl's people told them to turn their sound check sound down at the Forum in 2011 because Axl was taking a nap...so he definitely had a bed in his room. They were also told that Axl enjoys them, but they cannot make jokes about him like they do Vince Neil and Bret Michaels.

There is no excuse for why he would go on late all the time. I understand sometimes things happen that cause delays in shows but not at the rate it was happening in those years

I was at the MSG show they referenced in the video...I believe they followed Bach and his lineup at the time.  Show was great, PapaRoach was great, Sebastian was great too.

too bad there’s a little bad blood...but come on.  You have to at least know/understand that if you’re opening for Axl/GnR, you at least have to be flexible with your schedule.

obviously, the band has been quite punctual these days!

1-2 hit wonders, weren't they?  The one or two of their songs I like are decent but not so sure they have much room to complain as I'm fairly certain touring with G N' R helped them out a lot more than it helped G N' R out.

But it wasn't even peak true GNR, it was just Axl and randoms. I'd say the Chili Peppers tour probably helped them more. They've stuck around for 20 years now, in an era where music doesn't sell that much, nevermind rock becoming obsolete, they've done not too bad for themselves. Rock bands don't have that many true mainstream hits anyway unless they're Nickleback these days.

Yeah, it's very likely a lot of guarantees had to be put legally in place for this whole current operation to even get off the ground.

I guess that could be true but I'm generally not a fan of people complaining after the fact.  In the end, it's a business...and they (at the very least), mutually benefited from touring together, made money, etc...so why complain about it?  I don't always have good days at work and I certainly don't complain about my bosses/co-workers every time I have a bad day... or blame them for it...lol.  Whatever....I think it's a non issue, anyway. :shrugs:

I think there's this sort of thing, that after enough time passes, people tend to open up more about how they truly felt about stuff, since it was ages ago it doesn't matter anymore if they offend whoever they're talking about.

And yet the only way Papa Roach gets any pub is if they name-drop Axl and Guns N' Roses some 12 years after they toured with them.

I don't care for Papa Roach but that has nothing to do with this. Axl was unprofessional and that is too bad. He also mistreated The Eagles of Death Metal

You mean the Pigeons of Shit Metal? They made tshirts out of it and made a name for themselves off the back of Axl's insults. They continue to discuss it to this day so I am certain they are cool with it. I would have never heard of them otherwise. Also, they suck.

Oh hey, its you

Pretty sure Axl was an unprofessional asshole for the EoDM incident. Can you explain why your view differs, and how is mannerisms were considered graceful or at least professional? It seems we can have a good discussion. I also dont see what they did afterwards or your opinion of their music has anything to do with this, either. Perhaps you can help me out?

Thanks!

My opinion of them as musicians aligns with Axl's nickname for them, so I felt it was in line with the conversation. They are not the Eagles of the death metal genre. Axl's insult was hilarious and also clever. Unprofessional? Yeah, perhaps. But if the arrogance the EODM exhibited afterward is an example of the way they behaved backstage, insulting Sebastian Bach, insulting the fans who didn't enjoy them, and insulting the '80s rock genre as a whole, then they had it coming.

I don't know the entire story. Has Axl ever commented on it? I just know EODM's side of the story and the singer sounds like a troll. If he displayed the same pompous hipster attitude backstage, I'm not surprised he and his awful band were given the boot after only one show. But again, they've made a living off of it now. The only times that terrible act has gotten any publicity is after Axl insulted them and after people died in a terrorist attack at their show.
